Leaked Intel roadmap reveals six new notebook CPUs for 2010, better battery life in 2011
We love the smell of silicon in the morning -- especially when it emanates from one of Intel's legendary leaked roadmaps. Today, we've stumbled across one with specs for Chipzilla's entire fall collection of mobile chips, and a couple new details about that desiccated overpass the execs keep talking about. First up, it appears sources were spot-on about the Core i7s and Core i5s we heard about last week, but the 2.66GHz / 3.33 GHz Core i5-580M won't be the only dual-core CPU to look for in Q4; it will be sandwiched between the 2.8GHz Core i7-640M (which turbos to 3.46GHz) and the 2.66GHz / 3.2GHz Core i5-560M -- all of which peak at a conservative 35 watts.
True juice sippers will want a 15W CULV, however, and it seems more of those exist than Intel initially let on; Q4 will see a high-end Core i7-680UM that starts at 1.46GHz and turbos up to 2.53GHz and a 1.33GHz / 2.13GHz Core i5-560UM, plus a 25W 2.26GHz Core i7-660LM low-voltage chip will also join the fray. All these new dual-cores will have on-die Intel HD Graphics in one form or another, but all are also stopgaps until Intel's 32nm "Huron River" platform debuts in the first quarter of 2011. Then, we'll get WiMAX, WiDi and Intel Bluetooth alongside an intriguing new concept dubbed Zero Power ODD, which promises a power-saving sleep mode for our noisy optical disc drives (see more coverage link) and the promise of enough battery life to play two full Blu-rays on a single charge. Don't believe us? See the slides below for more.

Awesome, Intel ftw.
@Almo
ahhhhh but 32nm laptop quads are so far away!
@Almo
Unbelievable the pace of innovation. When will it slow down??
@Almo
Sippin' the juice! My kinda notebook!
I thought everything that was coming out this year had already been leaked....
@SolidSnake
Like an old man with a bad prostate, it seems Intel had a bit more to leak out.
(sorry, that was a really bad analogy)
@Yoshi urol, not anal.
@SolidSnake
This is why I'm hesitant to buy anything right now. I would buy it, then a month later, I would read a post saying how my system is obsolete and that a "new" iteration/generation of something would be out in a couple of months. GREATTT!....
What are you looking at!? I'm not bitter!
INTEL....I WANT SOMETHING THAT IA ACTUALLY, SIGNIFICANTLY FASTER...
@walter164
What on earth do you need anything significantly faster than a Core i7 for?
@walter164 I actually agree I really wish we could get back to the speed race. We can ALWAYS use more speed. These power sipping CPUs are still great though.
@gfrantz The market is really being dominated by intel. I really wish we could see the type of competition going on in the cell phone processor industry. IF that were going on...we'd probably be seeing some 3GHz speeds without having to be overclocked....
@walter164 The problem is that Intel is not the greatest on their workers. I know several people who have applied for jobs and internships with Intel who didn't accept positions because they found out about their inter-company competitiveness. They'll sabotage each other's projects and steal their ideas just so they'll get promoted.
@walter164
I agree completely... How is it that I have a macbook I bought 4 years ago with a 2GHz Dual Core and the ones they sell now only have a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo?
I know it's faster, but still, you'd expect something more after 4 years development...
And sorry for the apple reference... Just using them as an example.
@spikebrain I saw a refurbished macbook with a core 2 duo processor running (without having to be overclocked) at 3.08 GHz. My hp has the same of 2.4GHz and is TWO YEARS OLD...
@spikebrain
Comparing clock speeds went out the window a long while ago since it's harder to get higher clock rates out of modern CPU designs without significantly sacrificing real-world performance. Real-world benchmarks are really the only reliable performance measure.
Leaked road map? So is that 'intel' on Intel?
@summerboy18
Me too. I'll be dreaming about my new AMD Phenom II x4 Laptop D:
Oh snap! And I had almost decided on buying a new laptop this fall. Well, gotta wait until next year, I guess.
I wonder if my condition is treatable?
@FriendlyRobot
Actually, it is. All you have to do is become an Apple fanboy. From that moment on you won't care about new hardware or innovation. It will be all about the shiny fruit on the back of your screen.
@Stengo
See, last time I bought a laptop was when I got my Santa Rosa Macbook Pro. I only bought it because it was one of the first decent computers to sport that chipset.
I may be an Intel fanboy though. Or a silicon zombie – I crave fresh CPUs ....
@FriendlyRobot
I hear you. Well, I guess theres plenty to wait for, but don't hold out to long.
@FriendlyRobot yeah, it sucks. by the time you go to buy something, you're already hearing about how awesome the next line of chips will be. you gotta suck it up and buy at some point though, because if you keep waiting for the next best thing, you'll never buy anything.
such is the life of the gadget geek.
Hopefully we'll a whole heap of m11x style lappies- mr mouni
@Mouniface that's quite an offensive nickname you have there if partly read in Greek.
Gotta love Intel. They're on top of everything. Guess I'm waiting on a new laptop for now...
Come on Engadget, it was all good fun. I bet the supporters would have outnumbered the fanboys. Then again...
Say what?! Next years computers will have longer battery lives and...*GASP* faster processors?!!?
YAWN
@Drybones5 I do hope that amd do come back with something. They will be significantly cheaper.
What laptops will have the new ULV i7 chips? Will they be out before September?
Sandy Bridge is worth waiting for, it brings goodies: http://forum.notebookreview.com/hardware-components-aftermarket-upgrades/459313-forget-arrandale-sb-huron-river-platform-way.html
Looking forward to more wireless displays... It's the final part of my laptop that can't connect to my peripherals wirelessly (except power, of course..) I imagine that we will end up with small dongles that have a male HDMI connector on the end that we can just plug into the back of our TVs. Because what I don't need is another box under my screen.
The chart images are useless. You need a new image thing engadget.
Laptops are too finicky with heat and power. Where's a native 4 Ghz (at LEAST) desktop processor??
@RobertBruce1975
a (n>2)*2GHz core CPU is better than one at 4GHz (performance, price...)
@neglewis
Depends on the software. I've had a quad for a while now and very little takes advantage of it.
When's USB 3.0 going to be fully supported? Not buying a new laptop or computer until this happens.
I like to see some AMD quad although I already bought an i7 lappy. I guess this is Intel generation then. AMD, I'm counting on your graphic card :)
YES!!! I got saved!! I was just on Dell and HP about to buy a laptop when I stopped over to read Engadget for a while and saw this lol.
@Sniggih
I was saved too, I am waiting until 2010 Q4 before I buy a new laptop.
What are the specs that will be in laptops in 2011 Q1 and Q2?
Better battery life in 2011? Wow, I can hardly wait dude.
