Modder vies for World's Smallest N64 title with TrySixtyFource, looks to be a winner
In the modder scene, smaller is definitely better. We've seen a huge line of portable N64s over the years, each successive one claiming to be slinkier than its predecessors, but from what we can see the TrySixtyFource has 'em beat. It isn't as aesthetically appealing as the Nimbus 64 nor the Kamikaze 64, and the tiny switch buttons on the rear for the Z/L and R buttons don't look particularly finger-friendly. But, it's hard to argue that ShockSlayer's creation is a good bit smaller than the rest (despite its girth). It's also for sale, if you have the requisite amount of coin, and while the video after the break proves that it works, the lengthy intro will also confuse and befuddle you. We'd recommend skipping ahead to the 3:40 mark.

not quite at polished as recent efforts,
I probably wouldn't drop a few hundred dollars on it, although potentially if somehow (considering hwo this oen is laid out) they built in a snes to paly via the Dpad Cbutton combo they have going
then again im still glad to see it, if only because i was sure engadget was going to go for 3 apple posts in a row.
@Punisher Plum
holy crap i type bad at 2am. sorry for anyone unfortunate enough to read that. Seriously though, think about the "sne64" modders... think about it....
@Punisher Plum
looks like it was made out of marzipan
Just play N64 on your PSP, sheesh. :P
@Punisher Plum I would prefer the C buttons above the A and B buttons, and the joystick below the D pad. You know, like on a normal controller. And that leather is gonna make hands sweat big time.
@rutter9
I was going to suggest play-doh, but you may be right.
@Gibson
That emulator runs like crap, although I can appreciate the amount of work that went into it.
@Gibson
Yea then you can play maybe 1 or 2 N64 games at full speed with sound. Yea that sounds like a lot of fun. Sheesh.
I want one.
what the hell was that?
@MVMNT
loving zelda is 100% awesome all the time, but i fear this very skilled dude won't be appreciated as much by the general population.
@MVMNT. Originally I thought someone had put cocaine in my mask's ventilator tube. I then realised as the video progressed, It was meant to be taken seriously
@Lord Vader
lol had to let you know how funny your comment was
The hell did he make this out of?.....Candle Wax!?!?
@SPENone
He must've built that shack too...lol.
Ok i'll stop there.
Damn - looks like it works great, but ugly as sin. Not too friendly with the cart sticking out the top, either. For in-your-own house use only.
sometimes small is just too small, especialy when you have the cartridge sticking out all unsightly like that
ah well... suppose it'll make a good sun shade
i will challenge anyone to a Super Smash Bros match and i guarantee a victory
@who else but Quagmire
just from your tone, i bet you use kirby.
sigh...
@Punisher Plum
lol no no my friend...donkey kong.
Record holders aren't usually the prettiest, they are the best at what they do.
This further solidifies that claim.
Nice work by the creator, but looking like that it will be a hard sale.
Wow excellent work. Does that "work shed" scare anybody else though?
I still like the 64 Boy better. Even though it's thicker, it seems more portable IMO. Additionally, why do all these N64 portables have that ugly black color? Get some creativity, jeez.
Guys, before you hate on this or call it a waste of money and time, think about the insane amount of hard work it takes into making one of these. Think about how much skill and effort it takes to get it this small. When Edison created the light bulb I'm sure that people thought it was stupid and that he should stick to the candle, well look at us now. Lightbulbs are in every house in the world. So remember the hard work put in and stop calling it stupid because maybe one of us modders will create something that will be revered forever.
That's a weird (if compact) way to put in cartridges... I wonder if it's meant to be a sunscreen for the display.
At 0:40 you can see that the work shed is leaning... wouldn't want to be in the upstairs of that thing =O
Finish-wise it doesn't look very clean but still really impressive to get it that small.
@sugaki The right leg of the camera tripod is shorter than the other two, so it only looks like it's leaning. It's very level, trust me. :)
Also, to the author of the article, could you please change the name of it to "TriSixtyFource" with an "i"? Thanks! :D
SS
@ShockSlayer Looks like someone reveled their best hide and go seek spot to the world.
Nice work. I bet if you took the bezel off, worked it with Bondo and fiberglass resin, sanded it smooth, then finished it in gel coat, it would look pretty smooth! You gotta swap out that switch for something a little less industrial, though.
nice hut/ tree house... wait wtf is it?
Maybe if I had cargo pants from the 90's they'd fit...
My skinny jeans will never support this system.
I like it but theres no way in hell I'd put this in my side pocket maybe in my backpack but not my pocket. You would think with a club house like that he'd be getting all the cutty right now.
