Intel 'Canoe Lake' prototype netbook preview
Tablets may be attracting all of the attention right now, but it's clear that Intel's keeping a broad focus on mobile computing. During today's PC Client keynote at Computex, the company took a moment to talk up Canoe Lake, an experimental platform that'll enable 720p video playback on a machine that's barely thicker than a couple of envelopes stacked together. We got a chance to peek the prototype on hand in Taipei, and we were told that Intel designed the device you're peering at above completely in-house as a way to sell PC makers on the idea. They also affirmed that a GMA 3150 GPU was inside, and that the platform was capable of handling high-def multimedia. The machine was indeed functional, but few tricks were shown -- the 10-inch display looked suitable enough, though it would certainly take us a few days to stop noticing that monster gap between the keyboard and LCD. But hey, you've got to cram those components / battery / fairy dust somewhere, right? Look for a plethora of Canoe Lake-based systems (probably fashioned like the gapless netbook at the tail end of the gallery below) to start shipping in "the second half of this year" from companies that Intel simply can't name as of yet.
Updated: Apparently NetbookNews grabbed some video of the thin netbook. Hit the break for a walk through.

This is what netbooks should've been in the first place :D
@voltaek
in the picture where the guys got the Lake in his palm.. for the first few seconds it looked like it was floating
@voltaek
I know. They totally should have had the technological advances we have now 3~4 years ago when netbooks were first introduced. :p
except without that uber small right shift key !
@voltaek Or maybe they should've never been
@voltaek
Yeah. I don't see why people keep complaining about the gap between the screen. I use a netbook as my only machine (funds low atm), and this looks like an enormous relief on my neck. You don't know how smart of a decision what they've done here is. Try craning your neck downward for 5 hours to look at a 10" screen.
@barhoney My thoughts exactly, raised screen and more space for battery, seems like win/win.
wanna build a house out of these
Want...
the gap might be unsightly but if the screen is raised up as much as it looks I like it.
@mark29
I still don't get the affinity for Macbook style screens. The lower the screen, the sorer the neck.
Ugly as fuck.
@magadget
nah, ur crazy.
seriously though, im gonna have to get one of these when they release.
@magadget Totally agree. I don't understand why people would want one of these.
@tomer Actually looking at the gallery, the one without the weird gap (thats a different prototype right? :P) does look pretty good.
ah man does perfection look sweet
this would be great in a tablet or convertible
if you see ventilation holes, they blew it
@chrizzled
Or blew through it?
@chrizzled If you see a ventilation hole, they drilled it.
Make it kina ADAMO design, brushed aluminium and mybe a touchscreen and I'm sold..
@thisNthat
Yeah, a machine like this with U1 functionality and I'm sold.
Note the CPU draw on doing nothing :P, it seems weird that the CPU is drawing soo much power for doing nothing.
But it looks damn nice, get a sim card and its your net on the go fo sho.
@TehSilentWolf
looking good always takes some energy
@TehSilentWolf
They're probably running something in the background to show that the cooling solution can handle the heat output.
This just made netbooks interesting.
i really like that gap.
They should stop trying to cheat with the thickness. Apple started it with the macbook air (oh look how thin it is... around the edges and then it gets thicker towards the middle).
And now this, awesome thin everywhere except for that huge ass under the display. Makes it look so bizarre and not only because of that irritating gap.
This thing will be heavy on the back, possibly prone to flipping over backwards from your lap. -.-
VGA port? Still? Yeah, yeah I know projectors, business, blah blah. But come on!
That's pretty nice, I want one. :)
Is it me or do all the photos have a blurry foreground?
Learn to use a camera or buy another.
if it has a physical keyboard...they blew it
haha jk xD I like this netbook, way better then the eee pc 701 i had xD
i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it,i want it, though on a serious note ... i want it !
@Doml
you can't have it... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bl9bvuAV-Ao#t=1m35s
they should have placed the "legs" of the screen somewhat inward, so they could have usb ports on both sides instead of just the back
also, having vga on this is a joke
other than that, looks good
Ultralight like this with Pixel Qi.
Sure it's ugly, but at least it'd be somewhat compelling.
Too bad Pixel Qi is still just showing demos, and this is a long way off too.
Where's my Metro, Intel?
http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/24/intels-metro-laptop-prototype-is-worlds-thinnest/
Is old becoming new again? Why does this remind me of HP's 1984 notebook? (coincidentally called HP 110, just like the Mini 110...)

I don't "mind the gap."
It is worth it to have the screen raised up.
Breathtaking. You could have a fancy docking station for it that lets it double as a mousepad or Wacom tablet while docked!
I'll be replacing my Aspire One sometime in 2011. I want this device.
"Not for sale or lease" eh Intel? That's ok, I'll take it FOR FREEE?!
How about cleaning the screen on it? Geez.
I want that Wallpaper!
I thought the iPad was supposed to kill the netbooks....NOT!
Great ! :)
2012 = A netbook 1cm high ?
I am a bit sad that ARM just lost its last chance to get into mainstream computing and really shake things up. Marvell was showing a laptop like that last year a computex, with 1080p and HDMI out, amazing battery life and no cooling. Now intel has caught up to them, and there are no real products with ARM in sight, like the prototypes they showed. Even qualcomm took more than a year it seems to start shipping a new gen chip, and i have the feelin that by the time tegra 2 gets into devices, it will be old tech already, and the market for thin and light tablets/netbooks will be dominated by intel. Coz if intel shows it now, this means it is ready to ship by years's end. meanwhile, marvell armada 510 and 610 are already forgotten and there seem to be no OEMs picking them up. Respect to apple for what they are doing - announce a product in january and bring it to market in april. That's how it's done to get an early lead in market share (although they will probably lose it soon, after intel models come out)
I know I know, prototype, but no HDMI? C'mon intel, you expect someone to steal this at a bar somewhere and hook it up to their tv through 15-pin!
just beside the second model, the one with the "chin" on the back, why is there an Envy 15 sitting there? Was the second model an HP?
I am really digging this design...
This design w/ webOS on it would be KILLER! C'mon HP...... tablets & slates, we all have out preferences... (keys, no keys) HYBRIDS?!?!?!
