BlackBerry Curve 9300 fixing to replace the 8500 series?
It death of the BlackBerry Curve 8900 on T-Mobile (you can still get it on AT&T, by the way) bummed us out for the simple reason that it was perhaps the best-looking BlackBerry every made. The Curve 8500 series that followed it just didn't have the same sort of sleek, high-end air about it, so we're happy to see that the 8500's follow-on should go a little ways toward closing the gap. What we're apparently looking at here is the Curve 9300, a phone that carries over the now-standard optical pad from the 8500 but uses a decidedly 8900-esque chrome surround while adding 3G and support for 802.11n, a feature it shares with the Pearl 3G. What keeps the 9300 on the low end of the spectrum, though, is its screen -- it's apparently just QVGA, and we're a little discouraged that the leaked unit here isn't running BlackBerry 6 -- but you get what you pay for, right?

wish the screen resolution was better...
@2her0ck Another new Blackberry? Yawn...
I can't even imagine someone paying $30 a month data for this gimped phone, guess it will go nicely with AT&T's new $15 plan.
@2her0ck
NOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOO NOO NOO NOOOOOOOOOO
I just purchased 8520! :((
@krishansy
Welcome to the world of consumer electronics buddy :)
Yes but does it run Android? Kthxbai
"If it still has a mobile browser circa 2002, they blew it."
@crichton007
If this phone is so "yawn" then why did you click on this thread, apply all that effort, and spend your personal time into typing your comment? Are you that much of a loser? Do you do the same thing when you see an ad for a boring movie, buy a ticket, waste your time watching it, and after tell people you do not know that you knew the movie was going to be boring so that is why you wasted 1 hour of your time into it b/c you have nothing else better to do?
RIM could almost just make one model and nobody would notice. They all look the same and have similar features.
@Waltah
RIM makes multiple models... on all carriers... and sells a tons of phones. Blackberries have more market share than Android and Apple in the United States as we speak.
What are they doing wrong?
@Waltah
I agree. It's like the next big model from RIM looks just like the last 5. It's announced as if it's some revolutionary thing. I think they are still butt hurt with the Storm 1 & 2 sinking like the Titanic. So they are sticking with what works. Nothing wrong with that and most people don't care. It's mainly us tech geeks who do.
I guess, if it isn't broke - don't fix it? :shrug:
@Waltah aesthetics is not really what RIM is going for (or has ever gone for). The phones are different but you need to look in the spec sheet to see what the differences are. However, what I want to know is that happened to "virtually all RIM devices will be supported under OS 6"? Oh and I really hope that the wi-fi configurations/implementation is a bit more user friendly and they got rid of the techno-babble.
Is it just me or have there been over a bakers dozen variants on the Bold in the past couple years, sheesh they're worse than Motorola.
Bravo Engadget for being able to keep up with them, not that I'd notice if you missed one.
BlackBerry every made!
why the hell would anyone use these antiquated devices? I'd choose an android device over this craptastic any day
@Vanilla Sperm
Most are using for corporate mail and their employers require them. I don't really understand why general consumers would choose BB these days though, especially with 2 yr contracts.
@Waltah
The 2 year contract is a no go, but I don't really understand why people are comparing these with android phones. A lot of people don't need a phone to be "Fun" and the keyboard has most of them beat . I'm sick and tired of people showing me their new apps anyway I couldn't give a shit anymore.
@Waltah You can get corporate email on any modern device.
@KingFaisal94
Yes I know that, thanks. Many companies only support Blackberry for their employees use so that's where that came from.
BB has just gotten very stale and I don't see that changing any time soon.
Is this a joke post? RIM isn't serious, lol
Let me breakdown the device for you....
Screen Face = 85xx series
Keyboard = 83xx series
Back Cover = 85xx series (although rubber now instead of plastic)
Combine them and you have the "new" 9300 ;)
@Plazmic Flame You could also say the same thing about almost all recent touch screen phones.
@Plazmic Flame Marketshare = Unmatched in the US... i think they know what theyre doing more than anyone else does
@SteveyAyo That's just an ignorant statement. Look where Palm used to be and where they ended up. Look where American auto makers used to be and where they ended up. Just because somebody is dominating the market doesn't mean that they can't become complacent and cease innovating ultimately becoming obsolete and forgotten.
This blackberry would be perfect for me if the screen were
1) a little larger
2) touch
3) BB 6.0
@Plazmic Flame uhh, you could have just broken it down using only the 85xx series. I think this is by design. Similar to how every new iphone looks almost exactly like the previous year's model. If it isn't broken, don't waste time fixing (read: breaking) it.
@henhun while what you say is true, comparing RIM to american auto makers is a bit of a stretch. Your comparison with palm is a little more relevant.
The 8500 has always been pegged as a lower-end device than the 8900. I would imagine this is a replacement for the latter and not the former
What is the upgrade path for Blackberry 6?
Will all recent phones get it, only some phones etc.
I love blackberry, I had a curve 8320 back in the day and I loved it. If data plans weren't so expensive where I live i'd probably get another blackberry.
"BlackBerry Curve 9300 fixing to replace the 8500 series"...as a Southerner I get heck all the time for saying things like this.
@fluxlife well to be fair, they said "fixing" and we typically say "fixin"
what happens when blackberry needs to add a 5th digit to their model numbers?
I got the 8530 on Sprint a few months ago. I can't believe there's already going to be a successor. Oh, well. The 8530 and this 9300 - looks-wise - are almost the same. Internals is where this mght stand out. If it's got 512mb, then it may be a "go" for OS6 down the road.
And to answer someone's question about why go with a BB on this "gimped" phone. The reaon I did is because I was able to get it on my SERO plan ($30 + $10 for BIS). That's why I did. And I like the phone.
@decypher44 The Curve is a great entry-level smartphone and it does the job well. Hell, it's better than the Tour, which had no WiFi, no trackpad and the camera was pretty average. The Curve 8530 even looks better than the Tour (and the Bold, arguably). So it's a tight phone for the price.
That said, I will be moving up to the Bold 9650. We can use the 512 megs.
@Sevenmack It will also likely run OS 6, which is another draw.
does the camera come with flash?
It death? What?
i love blackberries but im not corporate enough to really need one
It's amazing that they keep getting people to buy the same retread crap. They haven't had an innovative product in years.
"fixing to" in the title?? Really... Are we fixing to fix up some vittles too?
