I understand wanting Palm's IP/WebOS, and possibly their patents, but not wanting into the smartphone market when their current business model is not doing so hot is idiocy.
But I didn't expect HP to be able to make a good Palm phone anyways. Their laptops have one of the highest failure rates.
This is the response you get if you 'email' HP CEO:
Dear Valued Customer,
Your message is important to me. Although I cannot personally respond to your message due to the volume of messages I receive, I often pass along suggestions and observations to my colleagues throughout Hewlett-Packard. If action is required, I'll have someone follow up.
If you need help, other information, or wish to send an e-mail about particular HP products and services, please visit our Contact HP page.
Actually, it makes a lot more sense than buying Palm, trying to resuscitate its dwindling smartphone market share.
I always thought that Palm's most valuable assets were their IP, and definitely not their devices, and I thought that Google would buy Palm just for their IP and toss the rest to someone that actually wanted to build smart phones.
Don't worry about it, this is HP looking for a path out of the desert. They'll make him retract this idiotic statement when they realize that he just described a smartphone.
While I'm all for WebOS on different devices, if you don't intend to use it the way it was envisioned to be used in the first place, that brought it from an idea to a finished product that people can use.... then you blew $1 Billion dollars.
@nanosman I am an iPhone owner that has been watching Android and WebOS closely in hopes that something would come along that would allow me to switch back to Verizon. WebOS, to me, was the closest thing to iPhoneOS--my favorite of the three--so this is a big blow to me. I hope that they at the very least put it into a tablet. I also believe that HP will change their mind and start making phones with WebOS once 4G hits.
@Po Steve Jobs is running a bigger company than this guy and he doesn't send back canned responses. He either answers you or he doesn't. This dude has no excuses to send back this canned response. Just a suit is all this guy is.
@nanosman Remember HPs slideshow when they announced that they were buying Palm... one of their slides show how big of a market smartphones are, and how fast that market is growing, as a motivation for the deal. And they still make iPaqs, dont they? I'm not to nervous.
@nanosman If they do intend to make a WebOS phone, this was probably the worst thing he could jumble... you now have legions of early Pre/WebOS adopters on Sprint that are going to jump ship to the Evo. Either way, its not a good thing for HP or consumers. I hope they clear up what he has said, it'll be sad to see WebOS only live on a tablets/slates (and god-forbid printers).
@nanosman It's possibly one of the most terrible decisions I think I've heard in a long time. Not using what most people know as the most fluent, user friendly and well respected smart phone UI's to sell smart phones is like cutting off your nose to spite your face.
They don't need to spend billions of dollars entering the smart-phone market, they JUST spent 1.2 Billion on a company that is already IN the smart phone market in a big way!! What is the downside of allowing Palm to work autonomously as the smart phone division while HP leverages WebOS on other products and then makes them interactive. Can you imagine how well they would do if they could take every office that had HP Printers and sold enterprise smartphone solutions with WebOS that could manipulate documents and print them directly from the phone. The two would become inherent like selling cereal and milk. One would very naturally leverage off the other and cause sales to happen. It's a no brainer.... unless of course you're brainless..... then they make you CEO...
@nanosman I'm sure HP will plenty of webOS devices for you to choose from. After all, HP's doubling-down on webOS. Printers, copiers, photo printers, faxes, printer faxes, tablets, printer copiers, the ability to control all-in-one printers from your palm pre, laser printers, portable photo printer copier faxes for tablets, etc.
@Lord Vader I think the transcriptionist missed the "just" that Hurd snuck in there. Listen closely... he says, "We didn't buy Palm JUST to be in the smartphone business."
Problem solved. As you were. This will be updated tomorrow.
You'll still get one, it's called a tablet... or a set-top box, or an appliance.
HP knows smartphones are yesterday's swiss army knife--and that the average consumer doesn't need a swiss army knife. Apple knows it and it proceeding to phase out Mac, and iPhones for iPads and whatever's new.
Yeah ok... It's getting old now, because you can't do a damn thing. You have no power to influence anything beyond the realm of your life. Say what you will about force choking me or whatever star wars thing you want to use. In the end, I'll be ok. Time to find a new theme buddy.
@nanosman Umm I think it will be somewhat difficult to promote WebOS HP low-powered devices, especially with Ubuntu, MeeGo and Android competing in the same space but offering an Open ecosystem.
Lets see: several HP WebOS devices vs several hundred MeeGo devices from ASUS, Acer, and chinese brands. HP will get many developers vs MeeGo many more.
Rule of thumb: More developers = more & better apps = richer experience

WebOS has been on mobile devices for over a year. You had your chance.
If you haven't bought one by now, you're gonna buy Android now.
Everybody fire this guy an email. Go to google and type in "HP CEO". Its takes you to his email. Let him know how we feel!

wait, wait, wait... "favour"? Vader is a limey?! I never knew!
The deal isn't done yet, right? Is it too late for Palm's board to back out of this? This is unfuckingbelievable.
@nanosman
This should be a CE-OH no he F*cking Didn't!
What a utter waste of webOS. I hope he reconsiders.
Why the f*ck does he think it doesn't resonate well? Idiot.
@nanosman
HP is a liar!!!
@nanosman
RIP Palm.
@nanosman I keep waiting for the "UPDATE!" That says "We are delivering the best built, spec heavy phone with WEBOS next month!"

@nanosman
Why does it look like a microphone is coming out his cheeks or is he straining that hard lol

@Po Email the board of directors instead. My HP laptop was in and out of their tech center for six months with no resolution to the problem.
A carefully worded two page email to bod@hp.com brought a call from a rep offering to replace my laptop two days later.
Victorious!
@iDamien I know this is an annoying comment but I need to thank you for making me laugh very hard aloud.

WTF HP? Now I wish Lenovo had bought Palm. LePhone, U1, and Skylight all running WebOS would have been sweet.
@MichaelPaul But I want webOS... I could cry right now.
@nanosman
.... and then engadget bought palm.
