Inventec's Dr. Eye puts Android in a pocket-sized laptop
It may sound like a mid-boss in some forgotten and poorly translated NES game, but Dr. Eye (aka the N18C) is actually a sort of keyboard-endowed MID from Inventec. This chubby clamshell sports a QWERTY keyboard, a 4.8-inch VGA touchscreen, 3G, WiFi, and a front-facing webcam. Power is said to come from a "Marvell 624," which we're guessing is a 624MHz PXA310 and, while it's currently running 1.6, word is that it'll be dipped in 2.1's creamy filling in the near future. When will delivery be? Inventec has been showing this guy off since last year, and while the person doing the demonstration indicates they'll be available "pretty soon" at a price point around $400, we found this guy for sale already at a price of 2688 yuan, or about $395. So, if you're eager to get computing and prefer donuts to eclairs, we wish you happy importing.

Man thats ugly
@redtalon
Doesn't look that bad.. but it does look CHEAP.. as in build wise..
@Incorrigible nice form factor, hope others can improve on it.
@redtalon That thing is downright hideous. I hope other forget about not improve upon it.
Good luck selling that to someone for $400... (although I guess there's always someone out there willing to buy junk)
if you are going to do a device in this form factor you have to make the screen swivel 180
@dagetz someone owned an HTC Universal.....
Buttonitis.
Dr. Eye is the name of Chinese/English dictionary software.
So this is probably just a pocket electronic dictionary.
An Android pocket-sized laptop, or an Android cellphone with a flip QWERTY and no phone capabilities? You make the call.
We Report - You Decide
"pocket-sized laptop"
There's an oxymoron.
@reidme Yeah, but I couldn't help myself.
No 2.1 then no go. Why do these idiots put anything less than 2.1 on these new devices anyway?
@Caprice Dates
I think the "why" is simple...the programmers set up the basics in v1.5 or v1.6, then look at their product and make sure those basic functions work. After that, they'll think of porting it to v2.1 or v2.2 and add in a few bells and whistles if it's appropriate.
Personally, I think the idea of super small computers that are bigger than cell phones, but smaller than actual laptops is lame and a waste of money, but that's just my opinion. I love Apple products, but the iPad is simply LAME! But hey, 2M+ have already sold, so guess there are a ton of fanboys out there. More power to them. :)
Man, if i have to pay $400 for this ugly unit, I would rather save up another $100 for an iPad. It takes forever to launch into the dictionary app...
Generally I prefer donuts to eclairs, but in this case I'd rather have a nice Froyo. :)
That is one ancient processor.
Is that a laptop in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?
What the hell...-- for a second I thought the woman in the background was wearing just black underwear for her bottom.
While the technical specs might need a little bit of improvement, I absolutely love the form-factor.
Reminds me of the old-school Libretto mini laptops from Toshiba.
Aside from the puny processor I love it. I just hope the CPU will be beefed up by the time it hits the US. I remember a looooong time ago I bought my first palmtop computer from Radio Shack. Just a green mono color strip for an LCD screen but I loved it to death. It had BASIC programming language, which I used to program it. Wow, those were the days!!!
Sincerely hope they offer optional CPU customization. I'd spent $600 on it if it had the power and 2 USB ports.
I want manufactures to make pocket computers!!!!! Thats so cool!!!!
What's with the new product with old OS? Android is free, installing 1.6 makes as little sense as releasing a laptop with last year's Ubuntu.
Is there a technical or business reason to hold off on Android updates?
saw it d'mo'd on youtube, if it can keep up w/the latest versions of android and beyond it'll do just fine!
That looks like a KIRF-y Moto Backflip.
I like it, but not the price.
It looks kind of like an old Dell laptop, did anyone notice when he said, it's not as smooth as an iPhone? XD
:/
This cannot be refered to as "Laptop". It's a "Palmtop" in the best case.
Android 1.6, what?
Look at those lock screen buttons. That's clearly 2.0+...???
At least slap-in a 1Ghz chip in for that price.
Is that a good or a bad keboard (practicality) for a portable device?
"Is it resistive or capacitive?" Does he have to ask? Can't feel the difference?
