1.5 GHz Scorpion and quartet of HTC Windows Phone 7 handsets headed to North America?
Conflipper is a regular in the underworld of HTC ROM cooking. So when he tweets about unreleased devices and their respective carrier support you really outta listen. First up is the HTC Scorpion (aka, Olympian) which he claims is going to Verizon and Bell Mobility -- a device previously rumored to be packing Froyo with WiMax and a 1.5GHz Snapdragon whipped topping. Conflipper also claims to have the inside scoop on a quartet of Windows Phone 7 devices and their respective North American launch partners: the HTC Spark_W (Bell Mobility and Verizon), HTC Gold_W (Sprint), HTC Shubert (Telus), and the HTC Mondrian (Telus, Rogers and AT&T). Note that the "_W" in those handsets signifies a worldphone device with dual-mode CDMA and GSM radios. And in the immortal words of Klaus Meine, "Time, it needs time." So true.

Rock you like a hurricane!
@etwashoo2, hopefully one of these is an HD3.
This is going to mean some seriously impressive games on both platforms.
1.5 GHz? What has the smartphone world come to...
@masochist
Good question.I know ARM's architecture has gone so far but what's the outlook for li-io/li-po batts?
@etwashoo2
I guess it will be next summer until we see all these devices...
we just finished seeing all the 1GHz powered phone that were announced Q2 last year.
Californiaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!
@etwashoo2
Scorpion wins. Fatality.
@kineticdamage Flawless Victory
@etwashoo2
God, Rock You Like a Hurricane's WAY too easy! Only a true Scorpions fan would come up with the appropriate Scorp's song for this device - "Speedy's Coming".
@masochist hmmm, I was thinking their 1.2Ghz duel core was the next hot.
@fastm3driver
I'm not moving to a phone past 1Ghz until battery tech serious steps its game up.
@NemZero
they wont put out chips that will use more power, thats just not what they do. Itll be faster and use about the same amount of power as current gen parts.
@masochist its actually rumored to be a tablet :D
@fel
You hope so. Maybe combined with AMOLED displays it might actually happen. We'll see.
@masochist 2021, core i7's will be ported to cell phones...
ahhhh, finally - a phone more powerful than my laptop!
I realize I'm on the fast lane to Lowest Ranked, but is there really any sort of need for a 1.5 GHz processor on an Android device at this point of time? What kind of games are going to be written for such high specs, when the vast majority of devices are considerably 'weaker'? Not to mention Android games are (relatively) uncommon. Since battery technology STILL isn't keeping up, all we get is a lower battery life and higher benchmarks that don't actually mean anything (except making the device slightly more futureproof).,
I'd much rather have a push toward Super AMOLED, a well designed hardware keyboard or better battery life.
@Pickaxe well said. die shrink it, lower the voltage, up the battery life, that would be quite a bit more useful. but then again, if they had more advanced throttling tech like on modern day cpus they could "overclock" the core(s) back up to 1.5 or whatever when it really needs it for (i guess playing games or what not...).
squeezing an extra 20 or 30% more battery life out of these devices would be a win!
@Pickaxe
Screw you and your logic 1.5GHz man!
@Pickaxe I'd say better graphics integration would be preferable too. Get a high-end handset that can match/out-perform the Galaxy S and those games'll start to come in, even if a bit pricey and going towards the top-end it'd be exciting.
I think it's somewhat unlikely that the devices'd sell big, but if the price is right, who knows. Also, it's being a bit optimistic to think that the games would be dedicated to the highest end, but it's possible, and if you can bring in some major developments with some great hardware you can seriously cut in on the mobile gaming market and try to chop it up with Apple.
@FuturismRave
Do we know the power draw of this CPU? It could be more efficient than the current 1GHz offering. Either way, the CPU is no where near as power intensive as the radios and screen, so it'd have minimal impact of battery life.
If it happens to use the same amount of power as the 1GHz Snapdragon, you could underclock it to 1GHz and get _more_ battery life.
@Glitch I assume that they already addressed that issue or will work on it for future versions
@Pickaxe Honestly, with the current technology, unless the App Processor eats a significant chunk of power like Atom (more than 1W), the power used by the processor is dwarfed by the power consumed by the display.
Take for instance, Hummingbird inside the Galaxy S and iPad. At 1GHz, that CPU core alone (never mind the rest of the SoC) consumes 750mW. Yet I doubt you'll notice the difference compared to an OMAP 3640 (500mW @ 1 GHz) or Snapdragon (500mW @ 1 GHz) when using the actual device.
The CPU's power, unless it's drastically large, simply isn't the major factor at this stage in the game to what the end-user sees as battery life.
@metafor ...great point.
@Pickaxe Its all about the head line grabber, 1.5Ghz, that's 50% better than those old 1Ghz chips!!!! Battery life is horribly subjective unless you have a robotic finger running multiple devices through the exact same paces with the exact same hardware but different chips/chip speeds. As soon as the screen/size changes or a different radio is used all comparisons on battery life go out the window. But Ghz are Ghz, on the same ARM architecture mind you, and its an easier big selling point. If/when benchmarking for mobiles advances enough we can start having the performance per watt comparisons that all the server hardware manufacturers talk about then its a different story. Though I doubt we will ever reach that point as buzz features like screen size, Ghz, ram and megapixels are such an easier sell to consumers.
@Pickaxe
i hate people like you who dont know anything about products or the way technology works and simply assume things. you do know that the 1.5 Ghz dual core will probably consume the same, if not less power than the 1Ghz snapdragon. as it is, the 1.3Ghz snapdragon that should be in devices soon actually consumes 30% less power than the 1.0Ghz model. Now think about that when you're enjoying lunch today...
@Pickaxe These could actually save battery power as someone already stated, die shrink and lower voltage. The Snapdragon isn't going to run at 1.5ghz all the time. Just like the snapdragon in the HD2 is not running at 1ghz all the time. The Snapdragon in the HD2 throttles down to 200mhz or so when its sitting idle, then ramps up to 1ghz as the processing power is needed. There are also several speed steps in between somewhere around 300 500 700 900 then 1ghz
@Pickaxe There's plenty of benefit to having a 1.5 ghz processor. Now with Flash, 3D games, and videoconferencing, there's plenty of benefits to having a faster processor. I don't know if Android can do anything special with dual core processors though, I'm kind of guessing that one of those cores will be left unused unless if special optimizations come to Android soon.
@Pickaxe
i know as a Touch Pro 2 user, i just want a smooth UI. all the apps and everything need to run smooth. i just get tired of hiccups i guess. don't get me wrong, i love my phone, but i guarantee you the next phone i buy will have whatever beast processor they have out by then (2011). which i hope is a TP3 with WP7 and a super Snapdragon.
@SoCoolCurt you might not be using SnapDraron because there might be another type of processor thats been invented
dang, did those guys always have receding hairlines?
@gettysburg11s -- yes. Still lovin you HTC!!!
@Bosco Yeah still lovin you htc... even when you didn't bring the EVO to Germany.
they said it was going to rain hell in the motherlands.. boy where they understating
What on earth is with that picture?! Maybe I'm too young to understand :)
@hammydbest The SCORPIONS, a German classical rock band, one of my favorites along with Queen, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and others..... FUCK I LOVE THE 80s!
@hammydbest
google "Scorpions"

@crob That's awesome!
@Mister Warmth I love the irony of your name, having read that post
Scorpion, I will buy you.
WHEN
@trong
by the time the next better thing, that you will crave, is announced
@detonator nuuuuuuu, i can't take this again! :(
omg, HTC Queen_WWRY and HTC Proclaimer 500M please.....make it happen!
@annoynimous Yes please!!!
I live in the UK; but really, today of all days?
@Professor Hubert J Farnsworth Where are the monster phone for the EU HTC? Where's our 4" AMOLED Snapdragon touting beast?
