How would you change Sony Ericsson's Xperia X10?
You may not agree with Sony Ericsson's time table, nor their decision on what flavor of Android to use, but let's face it: you were intrigued when SE told you the Xperia X10 would be its first Google-fied smartphone. To date, the X10 has yet to gain the kind of global appreciation shared by the Motorola Droid, Nexus One or iPhone, but that's not to say quite a few of you haven't ended up with one. We had our fair share of gripes and grins when reviewing the thing, but as you well know, this is no place for us to rehash what we've already explained. Rather, we're curious to know how exactly you feel about the Xperia X10. In what can only be described as the most competitive smartphone landscape in the history of the world, the X10 is going up against some huge players; do you feel that the product SE has delivered is up to snuff? Would you have rather seen a different version of Android from the start? Any issues with the touch panel, camera, or industrial design? Digging those hard buttons below the display? We have to imaging that the X11 is already floating around in someone's mind, and chances are high that they'll be looking in comments for advice on where to turn. No pressure.

Froyo
Or actually make it available in the US and with Froyo.
@treats
That too
@YvesOfWinter Yeah that's really all I can think of. Froyo, and more internal storage, RAM and/or ROM.
@N900
4G maybe?
@YvesOfWinter
Agreed! This thing needs Froyo.
@treats
Exactly, and adding 850 Mhz band for 3G to work in my country.
I dont know if that skin they use is really useful, I would be happy with Froyo 2.2, it is enough for me.
Oh and dont forget HDMI out and front camera, maybe the processor could be better?
@Beatnik
What are you talking about? The Xperia X10 in Canada uses the same bands as AT&T...
@Beatnik hold on son its got a front facing camera....
@YvesOfWinter True. Its ridiculous that SE is working on 2.1 while the rest are working on 2.2. When Froyo was announced they should have dropped 2.1 and started working on 2.2. At least that would have given them a better chance at catching up with the likes of HTC.
@YvesOfWinter
Nothing about Multitouch? The X10 was DOA.
@YvesOfWinter
FroYo with full features, nothing stripped away.
@YvesOfWinter I would not have it be from SE. I thought they went out of business.
Add a keyboard, and if it doesnt have it already, a micro SD slot, usb mini b port, remoteplay with PS3s,
Remove all that social networking crap
@YvesOfWinter
Donate it for free as part of the charity work from Sony!
@YvesOfWinter
Name it the PSP-- the playstation phone..
@YvesOfWinter And a SuperAmoled, a better multi touch screen and 720p 30fps video recording.
@YvesOfWinter
- ultra fast / constant updates for the awesome looking mediascape and timescape software (i have a motorola milestone (droid in europe) and i am thinking of getting either a htc android, or nokia meebo (with arm) or x11 if sony ericsson does well with software updates)
- PIXEL-QI screen (5 times less energy consumption while surfing would be great if that black and white mode is compatible with surfing, and doesn't only work with static text, with a button on the top to switch between modes) or super AMOLED
- 32gb ROM (i don't even want the hassle of using the install to sd card in froyo)
- 512 RAM or more (never have enough ram)
- arm dual cortex a9 in 28nm
- a battery with electronics for precise time left.
@YvesOfWinter
with obviously a 10 fingers multitouch sensor (Atmel maXTouch sensor with unlimited touch support) that engadget reported on not long ago here:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/confirmed-droid-incredibles-multitouch-support-is-better-than/
@YvesOfWinter
and SDXC would be neat ! :)
I would blow it up
@cephalotus
No you can't, a cephalotus has no brain, and apparently you don't either.
@cephalotus : So you would like to turn it into an iphone?
Its needs a physical keyboard, touch QWERTY sucks. Maybe they will get it right the next time
@blogwhitesitescom
Yeah, 80 million iPhone OS devices proves that touch qwerty sucks. .
@blogwhitesitescom After having an iPhone for 3 years, I'll never go back to physical keys on a phone ever again.
@TomSawyer
I have standards for the phones I buy, and the network they run on. 80 million people did not.
OH SNAP !
@blogwhitesitescom
I thought this, I've now had touchscreen for a month. It turns out to be total bullshit. What's funny is that you should be looking at this the other way around. Imagine trying to do everything else WITHOUT touchscreen, like with some sad little trackball or touch pad, cant believe I had it back to front all this time. There's nothing wrong with touch QWERTY really, it's just marginally slower and looks a bit gay.
@Calx I have an HTC Ozone - winmo 6.5 standard (no touchscreen). Got it after giving up my iPhone because it couldn't make/receive/hold a call. While not having a touchscreen has a few downsides, that phone is damn efficient at getting to my contacts, calendar, and for email/texting. Winmo without touchscreen is FAR better than winmo with AFAIC. And's it's simply easier and faster to do the basic smartphone stuff.
@Calx and you will always have to look at your fingers when you type.
That's the one that often drives people like coders and constant texters up the wall. Those people frequently type at 150+wpm and having to type less than 30wpm while literally having to watch their fingers when they type drives them mad.
Actually trackballs on android phones are awesome. Remember adroid phones are all still touch. What the pointer device lets you do is manipulate things that are too small for your fingers to get at like weblinks on a miniaturized browser screen, or selecting text. It's also a lot physically smaller than a d pad
@Calx
Or you could, you know, use something like an N900 which has both a physical keyboard and a touchscreen.
But don't take my word for it. (cue N900 commenting about how awesome he is.)
@PreGHz
N900 rocks. :)
@blogwhitesitescom
and what does AT&T have to do with the usability of a touchscreen keyboard?
Actually update Android on it...ON TIME!
Less plastic. 4 Buttons instead of 3.
Change the touchscreen's tech.
Allow it to be rooted easier...still not rooted.
@kapanak http://www.xda-developers.com/android/xperia-x10-rom-extracted-rooted/
XDA developers beg to differ on the latter :P?
@chrisjwright48 I saw that post too and looked it up further a few days ago, my wallet was burning for an Xperia after i had a glimpse at it while on a train. In the XDA forum it was mentioned the method was tried by people who had the necessary hardware but even they didn't manage to make it work. My wallet fire was extinguished unfortunately.
physical keyboard
(yes, i know x10 mini pro)
Why don't you send me one and I'll let you know?
Have smarter people design these things. 1.6? C'mon...that was so Droid Eris.
@bravokiloromeo Uhhh... Droid Eris has 2.1. And it runs like a dream.
@Danosuke111
It has 2.1 NOW, but it didn't 2-3 weeks ago.
@Danosuke111 Runs like a dream? Shit, if mine ran like a dream I wouldn't be scouring Craigslist to find something that does.
@bravokiloromeo
I wish my Dream ran like a Droid Eris...
@bravokiloromeo no, it had 1.5!
something involving c4, a working keyboard, android 2.2, SuperAMOLED (or even just LED) and most of all for Sony to have spent as much time on the actual interface as they did making sure it was imposible to root, seriously i just dont get how companies can be that stupid, this is their 'flag ship" device. Love the hardware DESPISE their iteration of android, i feel so screwed over looking at the N1,Desire,EVO right now... :-(
Give it at the VERY LEAST Android 2.1.
A better screen.
I would also like it rooted so I can install 2.1 or 2.2.
Less lag. It's laggy.
@CommenterNumber4678
I have no issues with lag. However, I use a task killer to get rid of a bunch of default junk that's running.
Resolution.
It's resolution will be obsolete in 4 days, so I reckon they need to bump up to to a 300+ dpi display.
@JS
You'd be hard pressed to tell the difference between a 320 ppi display at 3.5 inches and a 250 ppi display at 4 inches...Of course, an IPS panel or AMOLED panel does make a difference, but just on the pixel per inch basis at such a small size, the difference between 200 to 300 is barely noticable.
