HTC EVO 4G overtakes Palm Pre for best-selling launch day on Sprint
Considering the lackluster career that Palm's inaugural webOS duo ultimately endured on Sprint, it's wild to think back to those heady days when the Pre was the carrier's best launch day performer in history -- but alas, no longer. As you might've expected, the mighty EVO 4G has shown the Pre the door to take its own place in the record books, a mark we're not surprised to see considering the activation issues many customers saw on Friday as Sprint's systems buckled under the load. Sprint isn't quoting figures, but it proudly boasts of "temporary shortages of the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States" that are in the process of being replenished with daily deliveries. Now, the next hurdle is to see whether Sprint's shared WiMAX infrastructure can stand up to the load of its first wildly-successful 4G consumer product, eh? Follow the break for the carrier's press release.
HTC EVO 4G Breaks Sales Records for Sprint on Launch Day; America's First 4G Phone is a Hit with Customers
OVERLAND PARK, Kan.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Friday, June 4, was an early morning for thousands of customers who lined up several hours before Sprint (NYSE: S) stores opened their doors in anticipation of the first day of sales for America's first 3G/4G phone, HTC EVOTM 4G. Customers were anxious to get their hands on HTC EVO 4G providing record sales figures for Sprint stores around the country.
"I woke up and thought it was Christmas. This phone is so innovative and Sprint is so far ahead of everyone else when it comes to innovation. I'm so excited and looking forward to getting to know EVO better."
Friday sales of HTC EVO 4G marked the largest quantity of a single phone sold in one day ever for Sprint – the record was previously held by both Samsung InstinctTM and Palm PreTM. In addition, the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined.
"HTC EVO 4G is a clear winner for customers with the powerful combination of an amazing multimedia experience in 3G coverage areas that becomes even better in our growing number of 4G markets. It is terrific to see customers react so positively to this device and the innovative experience it brings to them," said Dan Hesse, Sprint CEO.
The record pace of HTC EVO 4G sales led to temporary shortages of the device at some of the 22,000 sales locations across the United States, including Sprint retail stores, national retail partners including RadioShack, Best Buy and Walmart, and indirect dealers. Sprint and HTC are diligently working around the clock to increase inventory in all sales channels. Additional shipments are arriving in retail stores on a regular basis with many stores seeing daily deliveries.
"HTC EVO 4G has more than lived up to our expectations that it would be one of the most anticipated technology products of the year," said Kevin Packingham, senior vice president - Product Development for Sprint. "We are working closely with our partners at HTC to increase the supply and get EVO 4G into the hands of everyone who wants one as quickly as possible."

still happy i pre-ordered
@yankees368
they sold all 15 they had in stock nationwide. bravo. it cant do anything more that any other android phone can do.
@WindowPhoneOwnsAndroid Are you some sorta idiot, or just a blind fan boy? The Best Buy alone in my tiny city, with another bestbuy down the street and many other places to buy had 30 pre orders plus several walk ins when I was there at 10am. That's not too bad for an area that is freggin poor and does not even have 4G
@WindowPhoneOwnsAndroid You are insane, i love everything Microsoft is doing right now and a few people call me a fanboy on here but the EVO is by far a superior phone than anything available right now, that includes my big beautiful HD2 running winmo6.5... Android has set the new pace for evolution in the smartphone world and no one can keep up, 2.2 is going to be amazing and so will winpho7, but for now EVO is king
pretending that this phone isnt amazing so you can pretend winmo6.5 is better than android is border line insane
@SteveyAyo
Actually i dare say your HD2 is better because while my evo runs android you HD2 runs WM 6.53 WP7 and soon to be Android 2.2 . God i love XDA and so should you since they give your device the ability to run things mine can not
@DefPoet lol i AM excited for the possibilty of running Android 2.2 and WinPho7 on it... i wonder if i can dual boot or possibly store the different OS' on different SIM cards, that way i can switch between the two when one of them starts to bore me... Wow the thought of being able to do that just got me VERY excited
@SteveyAyo
how about the HTC Scorpion w/dual processors.
i wish i was in that queue.
my damn att contract expires in august
@coolkams03, my contracts up on Sprint, could have been in that line like many Palm Pre users. Waiting for the WP7 launch of devices though to develop on. Hopefully Sprint gets that HD3 to make the wait worth it.
@coolkams03
You do know another "better" android phone will be announced before august... And it will make the evo look like, dare I say, the g1.
All kidding aside if there's one thing I have learned about the mobile industry it's that there will always be something better announced a month after you start your contract
@coolkams03 Um if you guys are rocking iphones then you should check your upgrade options, AT&T is quietly moving up people's dates they can get the new iphone without paying the full price. So if your contract is up in August then you can probably get the new phone today or when it comes out. Of course this is probably because another carrier is soon to get the iPhone but that will be announced or not, today.
lol this makes the iDevice line look like a train station
@John Lennon
?
@glenskey hes implying that the iphone lines are 100x better... this is the first time in my life i was happy Mark Davifd Chapman killed Lennon, hes ruining the name by being a massive fanboy despite that being anti Lennon in every way
Engadget can you please BAN him just on principle?
@SteveyAyo
Yes, the irony that someone using the "John Lennon" moniker being a victim of brand loyalty and really caring what the lines are like for a commercial product. Amazing.
Now, let's get back to discussing tech products.
@beardoc
Well you knew this was bound to happen when you let idiots like Darth Vader regurgitated all over the place.
Looks like the HSN sales didn't exactly hurt them. BTW, I'm guessing 1 million over the weekend.
@teky It took the Droid 74 days to reach 1 mil.. I highly doubt the Evo will sell 1 mil just in one weekend.
@jellotime91
Well, there are more casual people than geeks. People who know a thing or two about technology and are seeking to buy a top notch phone buy the Evo 4g over the other brand as of June 4th. Unless they are a branded cattle. I like to go where the wind are :)
@cdf74dc9 People who know a bit about technology won't buy in to Sprint's marketing BS. The EVO is not a 4G phone, but simply another Android-phone with CDMA2000 (old technology)/WiMAX (old technology).
However, it's a clever strategic move by Sprint. They won't have to invest heavily in building up a completely new network and at the same time make everybody believe they have "4G". In the longer run this proprietary solution will loose to LTE and even HSPA+ when AT&T and T-Mo ups their capacity...and you will be stuck with your beautiful EVO Brick!
@webstarcool
You're dumb.
@webstarcool They won't have to invest? Dumping 5 billion dollars into a WiMax network is nothing right? Your post is a fail and you are certainly an ass h*le.
I get mine tomorrow... I hope it's all I expect it to be.
@KimH
The battery is totally better than what they make you believe (by they, i mean reviewers)
I use my evo nonstop all day and at the end is at a solid 30%
@KimH
200 bux for EVO.
80 bux a month for unlimited usage.
recording people drooling around you in 720p and then uploading it to YouTube right there on the spot... Priceless!
@dark star
Actually I pay $70/m 4g included plus extra 50min/m from Justin who I think work for Sprint. The only downside is you have to do rebate yourself and wait for 2 days shipping. But the $240 saving and +50min/m worth the wait.

@Technologeee Apparently its only a problem if you're actually using 4g.
I'm really disappointed with some of the dinky batteries HTC is using in their smartphones. I realize they want to make them swappable, but iPhone is cramming in a 1700 mAH battery into a tiny little form factor and this beast only gets a 1500 mAH? Hell, the Droid Incredible comes with a puny 1300 mAH battery and there are after-market batteries that fit in the *same* slot and deliver 1750 mAh.
I feel like they're just cheapskating the batteries cause they know it brings up manufacturing costs and doesn't necessarily increase the price they can charge for it.
@Technologeee
Precisely the reason I won't even bother with an iPhone. I plan to have a dock (when they come out) for home, work, and car. As well as at least another battery. Given all the technical capabilities of the EVO, and given the slow advancement of battery technology, I think it just a fact of life that as phones get more advanced, we'll have to be more careful of how we deal with batteries, and opportunities to charge. Apples insistence on eschewing removable batteries, flies in the face of technical reality.
@KimH I don't know if you've noticed but Apple actually takes great pain to make sure that you don't HAVE to swap batteries in the middle of the day. What is the most elegant solution: to make the battery replaceable or to make sure that is lasts all day long?
@Garion I have an iPhone 3GS and love it, but the battery life is not terribly good and is not a highlight. There's a lot to love about the 3GS, but battery life isn't one of them. It's not horrendous, but it isn't that good, and if you're a heavy user of data and/or games you'll have to charge before the day is over, as I do on many days. I have a charger at work and that solves the issue there. For trips I've got an external battery in a case. It works quite well, though it makes it a bit bulkier, heavier and uglier. So... the much better battery life (apparently) of the upcoming iPhone will be a big improvement. It's also worth noting that if you are a driver (I mean, you commute by car), then you likely have your iphone plugged into your car on the commute in order to play music, use GPS and such, and that means you end up with much longer battery life as well as it stays full charged there. I ride the train and bus to work, though, so battery life is a bit of an issue. It's certainly workable, but I do wish it were better.
@cdf74dc9 Is there a way to get a SERO plan with an employee discount?
@Faxmonkey, the iphone battery actually isn't that big... the 3GS has something like a 1200mah battery, with the new iphone (according to the gizmodo teardown) having a 1400mah battery.
I do agree with you that they could make the devices a little bigger and get a bigger battery in there. Seidio sells a 1750 at the same size as the EVO's 1500. I'd pay an extra $15-20 for the device if it had something like that.
So far, the 1500mah battery on my EVO appears to be doing the trick. It's definitely better than the absolutely ridiculous 1100 mah battery in the pre. I couldn't even get through a work day with that damn thing.
@Faxmonkey
The battery is amazing, even on 4G. I went to a concert and recorded about 20 minutes of video, took about 150 pictures, uploaded about 20 of them to Flickr (full res, about 2M per pic) sync'd the rest with Picasa and used the Navigation (with GPS) to get to the after party. Another 100 or so pics and about 10 min of more video, plus a few youtube videos and extensive pic viewing with brightness at max (plus friends playing with my phone at the bar all night!) and I still got home with the battery just hitting Yellow (which I believe means 30% is left).
(Plus some calls, texts, and what not)
All in all about 8ish hours of pretty heavy almost continual usage. The phone had 95% charge when I took it off the charger that morning.
I do get great 4G coverage though.
@djpedro From what I hear Seidio batteries aren't that great. http://batteryboss.org/
Duh.
No surprise there. Glad I pre-ordered as well. People were getting turned down at my local Best Buy walking away with a second pre-order round for a later date.
@liquidkernel
The 3 BB's i went to in Phoenix is on their 4th round of pre-orders. :(
@yankdez not much of a there record to beat...
Go Android! Looking forward to seeing some hard numbers soon.
omg...this phone with all its fearures seems sooo amazing people...everyone must agree that the is the best mobile phone to date.. i really hoping to see the next gen iphone but i dont think it will be as good as this phone
I can't wait to get mine on Friday.
OMFG....this phone seems so awsome ...this is the best phone to date!!!!!!
I've been waiting to upgrade to this phone since it was the supersonic. Now that I have it, all I can say is
DROID DOES!
@Dmelling
Droid does NOT exist on sprint.
Android != droid
Lucas films licensed the trademark of droid solely to verizon
@DefPoet which kindof sucks because Droid could be the marketing spin google needs to really send their platform mainstream
@DefPoet I love semantic arguments. Do you always let marketing campaigns define your life?
@Dmelling Well he is right. Droid is Verizon's Android phone line. It's incorrect to use it talking about non "Droid" devices and confusing. I'll give you a +1 for creativity, but a-1 for incorrectness. So overall a 0. A Zero..
@SteveyAyo honestly all the 'Droid' label does is create confusion.
On vzw there is a line of phones called 'Droid' - but within that line you have the simply named Motorola 'Droid' along with the Droid Eris and Droid Incredible... All running on the 'Android' operating system.
I bet you half the owners do not realize their phones run on 'Android' and not 'Droid'
@Dmelling NO i dont but i once received a cease and desist letter form a lawyer representing Lucas Films because i promoted my products with the term droid so i might just be a little biased :P
@Dmelling
yeah, i still call it the supersonic
