Shocker! Notion Ink Adam likely delayed (update)
Another day, another exciting tablet delayed. The Notion Ink Adam -- that 10-inch, Tegra 2-powered tablet with a Pixel Qi screen that we fell pretty hard for at CES -- is apparently going to be delayed. We can't say we're Updated: We heard from Rohan and apparently the Adam will hit only some countries in November, the initial list of target countires will get the tablet earlier. He tells us pre-orders in the US will start soon!

I'm not surprised either, but am really looking forward to this tablet!
I hope they get everything ironed out and bring this to market.
@MagnetMan
More Android tablet vaporware! Who would'a guessed something like that. Better to hold it back then be humiliated. There shall be only One.
@MagnetMan
Being an Indian, I know not to trust an Indian company to deliver on anything.
@Kurian Agree. I doubt these guys will bring out something, even though they have the ability to assemble best things, they lack the ability to bring it out on time. see apple, ipad lacks many features which will be released in the next version, still they released it because they know if its released now they will catch the crowd. Notion Ink, if it goes like this will become like just another Chinese company who sell cheap tablets or phones online in this website www.euogo.com, which no one will believe and buy.
Apple is going to be the next Micro$oft, I am not sure how to depict money symbol in Apple's name, but it is written money all over it, its like that alien ship which sucks water from every planet in the Star Trek movie, if something like NotionInk can come and try to reduce Apple's speed, then it is worth, otherwise i could see us all becoming slave to apple sooner, i can see in future our neck having a seal of apple and implant created by apple attached to our nervous system and control us :).
Tell Courier I said hello.
@Colours
My thoughts exatcly! I hope they don't scrap it. Those kids behind the concept are fresh out of college kids and they reminded me of Jobs and Woz. Lot of passion and creativity, they need a little bit of success and we wld see more innovation. Success breeds success!
@Colours
All this vapour is making my throat itch,
@GadgetFunkie
Hope they dont give up. I read many days ago that the delay was because the inversionists wanted it to get released on Thanksgiving.

Awesome comment! +1
It's sad to see though, to be honest, I completely forgot about this thing due to so much other news of other tablets and of course the obviously-week-after-week news of how the iPad is doing...which is sad. I still look forward to the release of this thing and the review from a number of sites including Engadget.

Very Interesting features.
@GadgetFunkie
Hmm, Jobs and Gates were in similar mode when they started their organisations, so they know how to kill these aspirations, as they must have learnt the secret long ago. So my belief is due to unavoidable circumstances (which obviously were created by Apple or other such giants) NotionInk will be closed soon and Adam will be sold to some big Giant (I can see Jobs burning Adam and its design papers in his fireplace with a laugh of villain) and use few of its feature like swivel camera in their future products. Being a person from India, i can see that its easy to buy these kids than encourage them to become the next Jobs or Gates.
These things happen. There is some wisdom to Apple's tight lipped strategy. Aside from iPhone, which we expect a yearly release, something could get delayed and no one would ever know.
I'm still excited about it.
How could anyone not see this coming?
Looking at team's inexperience and lofty specs, its a vapor-ware. Just read this article http://www.livemint.com/2010/05/28204007/The-Apple-of-Adam8217s-eye.html?h=B
"Ask for a sneak peek of some of the latest apps Notion Ink has developed for Adam, and Shravan reacts with a new-found reticence. “I can’t say much,” he says, “but we have an email application that can do some pretty fancy things, like pulling back an email from the inbox of the recipient. Then there is the magazine-user interface which I believe will (be) the future of UI (user interface)”."
"This hyberbole, unfortunately, has always gone hand-in-hand with the Adam. It promises a battery life three times that of the iPad, and “beautiful results” with gestures and heavy graphical applications. These are features bigger firms have struggled with for years."
@memeslayer read this nugget
“We first focused on the functionality in Adam, unlike device manufacturers who decide on the technical components first. In their case, the features of the device depend on what the components can support”.
@memeslayer
Shravan was keen that Adam not be influenced by any one of its competitors, especially the iPad. “I knew the iPad was in development because I follow patents very closely. And I was hoping it did not release while we were developing Adam, just so our creativity didn’t get stilted,” says Shravan.
Yeah, their creativity just got stifled.
@memeslayer They are just hoping to be bought out by someone, this device will never see the light of day because it will never be able to do half of the crap they claim it can.
@memeslayer
You're an idiot. It's not vaporware (the tablet is actually completed according to insiders) and the battery life *will* be better simply because of the PixelQI screen (which is also absolutely not vaporware). It's just common sense. The ipad would also have much better battery life than it does now if it had that screen.
I'll be amazed at the ineptitude of OEMs if there is not an avalanche of better devices before this thing ever comes to fruition. On second thought, looking at the fruits of Computex, no I won't.
I'd like a Pixel Qi device as much as anyone, but my enthusiasm for Notion Ink will wear out completely in the coming months, and I'll drop my compulsive coin on something else...heck, maybe even an iPad.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
Please don't vaporize. I hope this is just a delay to get 2.2 with flash on this bad boy.
This would *probably* be a pretty nice tablet if it ever comes to market...
:-O
Where's Vader when you need him to come in and start shouting, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO?
@Prevacator http://www.nooooooooooooooo.com/
Ahh nuts. Too good to be true.
And I hope it comes out in its birthplace before the rest of the world for a change.
"Investor preferences"
Could it be, that the Adam will be a ChromeOS device?
I really hope the delay will bring the prices for the PixelQi version down, as the suggested $800 seems to much, when a LCD version with half the storage(16 vs 32 GB) is suggested to retail for $327. Not to mention the competition from Innoversal that says they will bring us the screen in September for between $530 and $550 according to http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/innoversals-pixel-qi-based-tablet-prototype-530-for-the-displ/
I can hear vader from here . . .
but this better work out, I would like to see a useful tablet come to market this year
You can't expect miracles. To think that some unknown company run by a bunch of kids would just stumble upon a device significantly better than anything else either on the market or planned is a recipe for vapor stew.
You'd do better to save up your money for a time traveling unicorn.
@GeneralThade
Honestly, I almost expect more out of this bunch of kids than I do a major corporation.
How many times have the major players (HP, Apple, whatever) show themselves to be utterly clueless?
@luxor51
About the same amount of times an Engadget commenter has shown themselves to be utterly clueless?
You expect more from this than from Apple? I take it you're not an investor
@GeneralThade
Yeah I mean this Steve Wozniak and Jobs... look @ what their doing now ! Serving fries at Mac Donalds right ?
And Bill Gates !
And Zuckerberg !
And the Google guys ! I mean nobody even remembers their names !
Do you even use your brain ? because if not donate it, science could learn a lot from you !
It'll be like knowing more about the inside of Windows Millennium!
@Flix C
hey don't get me wrong. The best thing about big companies creating a revolutionary (magical...lol) product is that it challenges the little guys to come up with something better (which they usually don't), but in turn, it challenges the big guys to improve their product. Ultimately and consistently throughout that lifecycle, however, you're going to get the best product and the best experience from the big company with the resources, money, experience, and facilities.
@suicidebob
No we are customers. We expect KICK ASS DEVICES !
Investors expect unimaginative, well polished devices that sell that bread after a starvation. Basically that's Apple developing strategy.
I must say it's one hell of a good commercial strategy, as an economical science enthusiast I admire them. As a customer I hate them for killing so much good products.
@GeneralThade
flix's point was that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, etc WERE the little guys that took on the big companies. And they beat the big companies and became ones themselves. So it's ludicrous to say that you can't take one Microsoft or Apple. The Ipad could have had the features the Adam has. it wasn't that they couldn't. But they can make more money holding off those features for future gens. The guys behind the Adam are about innovating. And that's why I'm waiting to buy one. Also, because they are the little guys trying to put out a good (nay, great) product.
The thing definitely isn't vaporware. There is a video clip where they demonstrate a "final hardware" prototype. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQvefuCHZds
I'm not too worried about the delay. Supposedly it's done, and nothing else is really out yet (I'm not buying an iPad).
I wanted to be able to compare the Adam to the WebOS tablet coming out anyway. I don't see the need for panic.
@luxor51 Until it can be purchased online or in a store, it may as well be vaporware these days.
Ah yes. Another iPad competitor on life support.
Who is this company really and can how can they possibly think they can compete with Apple?
@SCXFAN
Build it and they will come.
A lot of these companies whose names you might not know are not necissarily garage start-ups.
Many of them are OEM builders or designer or engineering firms which have solid histories and firm knowledge in manufacturing.
All they really need to do is build the right product and then build enough of them to keep up with demand.
It isn't going to topple apple - at least not overnight or in one go.
But I don't car if apple is toppled.
I just want a decent device at a decent price.
@savagemike
Uhh what? You're saying Notion Ink is an OEM and has a 'solid' history and 'firm knowledge' in manufacturing? Where are you getting this from?
@SCXFAN
Dude this is so much better than the iPad it can be delayed a year a compete with iPad 2.
Any investor who doesn't 'prefer' to have this thing out in time for the holiday rush is a moron.
@savagemike Tell that to nVidia.
Talk about Engadget BIAS
Let's face it. No tablets will be coming out this year. All those computex annoucements and displays were all a big waste of everyone's time.
i doubt it is notion inks fault. Afterall how many tegra2 or pixel qi devices are there in the wild?
They are most likely just waiting on their hardware suppliers.
@juniperpansy
yeah but that really doesn't count does it ?
And the fact that they needed to announce their product more than a year upfront to get credits because well, guess what they are a startup and not Apple so on top of having to put together an actual ground-breaking product they need to find people to give them the money necessary for its production!
That doesn't count either.
The fact that all the press is sucking Steve Jobs dick and killing all the innovative start ups in the business ? meeeh.. this was never a start up business anyway I mean.... right ?
Oh wait !
Remember how everyone said to wait until the 2nd gen iPad to buy? Well that goes for the competition as well. If you really want a tablet (and not an iPad), at least wait until there are a few on the market before you go grasping at the first competitor out the gate (well, the second if you count the JooJoo).
The same was true with the iPod and the iPhone. Apple makes a solid product. It's not for everyone, but traditionally nobody can match them in the first year. I know everyone wants an iPad killer, but take the advice you give to all the iPad early adopters, and wait.
@SpacePenguinBot
It's not that hard to beat the iPad. Apple set the bar reallllly low. Throw in removable storage and you've beat the iPad.
@toddjy Well I guess that explains all the "iPad killers" out on the market.
