Sony's second-gen VAIO P now available for pre-order
Sony's VAIO P certainly isn't for everyone but, if it's for you, you can now finally get your pre-order in for the latest version on the SonyStyle website. Contrary to what we had heard earlier, however, the luxury netbook now starts at $899.99 (not $799), which will still get you the same Atom Z530 processor and 2GB of RAM, but a larger 128GB SSD -- the expected 64GB option is seemingly nowhere to be found. You can rest assured that the neon green, hot pink and electric orange color options are all still available, though. Look for it to start shipping around June 25th.

why?
@zcubed
why?
it has a decent CPU for it's category.
SSD , not HDD and 128GB
2 GB of RAM
long lasting battery
and the other day, I accidentally discovered it while strolling in a sony store, and I was blown out by the lightness of it.
it weighs NOTHING.
I did not believe so I asked the guy there to open it to show me the battery was inside, and yes , it was, and the battery lasts long (can't recall the exact thing, but I think it is 7 hours ++, might be a bit off though)
and then, the sony screens are very nice (and not reflective)
the soudn with Sony is to marvel about
defaults are:
CPU might seem a bit slow for too many windows opened.
the keyboard: I always hated this new trend of keyboards with this gum like keys. I use my devices for many things and one them is working, that does fit as bad as a full touchscreen-keyboardless.
anyways, go check it out, you won't believe that machine
@D1Only1
at 900 bucks it better do my laundry. i have seen it in person but i am too much of a power user to appreciate this one at the current price.
@D1Only1 Including the battery and a keyboard it is lighter than the iPad.
@D1Only1
For that formfactor, I would pay that much if it had:
A Z600 instead
A trackball too
A great capacitative touchscreen
A capacitative stylus and dedicated slot
A decent stereo speakers
A built-in mic
A built in ...
heck sorry Sony, there's plenty of devices at decent prices for me to overlook this.
I am well off with a G1, CULV and PS3 for me to squeeze you in there.
Oh Sony, I still remember the days when you were on the top of my list when I wanted to buy electronics. Those days are long gone.
@angelusp
I'm stunned they can offer an 8" Atom powered laptop for $900.
@Blizzard
and it weighs nothing, 128 SSD, super hi-res screen, sexy design
@angelusp Sadly not in the good way.
@angelusp Yes, stunning prices, instead of stunning "products". :-(
Yeah, like find someone who is gonna pay 899 $ for THAT.
@thisNthat
You'd be surprised...
I'm not saying it's a good product, but people that aren't too informed will jump to buy this simply because of the Sony label.
@seanGadget reminds me of that other company... the one with the bitten fruit, lead by He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
@thisNthat
Well, with a 128 GB SSD, it's no wonder it costs that much.
I agree that they should offer a cheaper version.
@seanGadget
i think it looks pretty sexy
@thisNthat et al.,
I'm well informed and I bought one because the form factor is perfect for my needs. I sometimes still use an NEC900/WinCE which has a similar form factor. The 900 is instant-on, which matters a lot to me. The P claims 2S from standby. The price with accessories and tax was a tad over $1490, and I added a 32GB Duo Pro for about $160. For my interests and needs, that's a reasonable price.
@dougjensen
I forgot to mention that the price included the 2-year accidental damage warranty of almost $300. And I forgot to mention that the P having a pointing stick was a major factor: I have been a Thinkpad owner since they first came out, and am a die hard user of Trackpoint sticks and I dislike using touchpads. I use an IBM Trackpoint keyboard on my desktop PC's.
I think I'm going to go buy a couple more 32GB DUOs.
Thank god there's a neon pink option. It was so generic otherwise.
That orange is ... orgasmic.
Not paying the Sony tax.
So your telling me it costs 899 to travel backwards in time?
So much Sony and Apple hate. Seriously, it gets old.
899.99?= FAIL!
I am a big fan of sony vaio laptop.in fact I am using vaio laptop to type this comment now.what I like about vaio is that it is a robust laptop and pretty comfortable in using it.and I am surely will buy that sony vaio P, if I got the money of course. :-)
So many whiners, how about whining about your next iphone 4?
for that price the should have add some ULV pentium or core duo processocer.
I like Sony, but $899.99? Come on there are smarter ways to spend your money.
PS it's $899.99!
I'd buy the VAIO P at $499.99 it's a nice looking netbook.
The one problem with the "classic" Vaio P was that it used the GMA500/Poulsbo chipset, which had badly broken linux support (mired in ownership disputes that have kept anyone from making it work with a modern release.) Any idea if the new one avoids that?
@eichin No such luck.. It still uses GMA500. There are many other GMA500 based MIDs and netbooks as well, so one has to be very careful when choosing one of these things for open source OSs.
@mukatuna Ya the GMA500 was a killer for me. Even though Intel provided better drivers after the release. I would have considered purchasing this again if it had a better than GMA500 graphics adapter especially at its default res.
sony and touchscreens arent friends, right?
Hmmmmm Pea green.. nice.
this must be a typo.
I think its an Apple product.
The product look girly and its expensive!
sony wont sell many of these net tops for 899.00
i rather buy a macbook for 100 more .
hello sony wake up. 900. for a netbook.
dream a little dream .
for people who live in the real world 900 gets you core i5 windows pc
or save a little more and get mac air .
the sony is nice but 900 its crazy. 499 maybe lear from
you mistakes with the ps3 and its 599 price tag when it came out
xbox broke out on top learn sony learn. please lear something
what is this I don't even
@FAP FAP FAP
"please lear something"
Sony the same overpriced POS company from yesteryear.
@FrankDTank
Yeah the same POS company that revolutionised gaming, brought Trinitron Tvs, gave us the great chicklet keys that Apple so bluntly copied, created the e-reader that is generating a huge buzz right now.
Oh shit I just realized you were a TROLL!
wtf is sony thinking? I would love to see who is going to buy this and how well it will sell.
Of course, this will be a hell of a lot cheaper if you buy it at any other store so I would think you could pick it up for $800.
On price though.. seriously guys? It's $70 more expensive than the top end iPad and offers a LOT more (double storage space, actual full OS, keyboard, SD slot, more powerful processor, more ram, better screen etc). I think I will be picking one up. Orange or green?
