FBI steps in to investigate iPad security breach
You might recall yesterday's news that a little trickery into AT&T's systems brought about the breach of 114,000 Apple iPad-owning email addresses. Now it seems the FBI has taken an interest in the case and has launched an investigation into the "potential cyber threat" of the snafu. As far as we know and have seen, the hackers were able to obtain just email addresses, although with that comes the knowledge that the victims in question own iPad 3Gs and don't mind AT&T's service -- don't click on any odd billing statements if you were affected. As stated previously, the carrier has subsequently apologized and proverbially "plugged the hole" from which the info was obtained. Not sure anything will come of this inquiry, but we'll let you know what we hear.

&!$# just got real.
@CPTMuggle Oh yea. Someones gonna be in some serious shit. They took the emails of some powerful people or knowledgeable people. Not surprised the FBI is stepping in..
@CPTMuggle
Or not. Since when have they been up to the task?
@CPTMuggle
These are some elite cyber terrorists on steroids who doesn't afraid of anything
@Fragmented
You know its serious when the Federation of Big Idiots is investigating your iPad.
@CPTMuggle
Michael Bloomberg and Rahm Emanuel were on the list. You damn right...sh*T just got real !
iPad 3G has a lot of security flaws.

@Fragmented to happy that i don't use that me too from google, enough viagra already
@EggoEspada ...owning an ipad is dif than bein "knowledgeable", it's either, sorry to burst your bubble there.
@CPTMuggle
$H!T only got real for the hacker group "Goatse Security", which is who the FBI is probably going to go after.
But the real villains are AT&T for having such an obvious security hole.
@CPTMuggle
The head line should be "FBI steps in to investigate AT&T security breach" , I'm a windows guy but still this is misleading. Apple and the iPad had nothing to with this. The ipad itself was not breach but AT&Ts own website.
@CPTMuggle They are going to investigate the AT&T SECURITY BREACH!! Stop making this look like an Apple thing, it's an AT&T thing that affects iPad owners. They didn't hack iPads, they hacked the AT&T network!!!
@CPTMuggle
thats a pretty big snafu...not like its truly at&ts fault but they could really lose a lot of customers over this. i wonder how theyll respond to the affected customers.
@CPTMuggle
They goal is to get as much data as they can and sell to black market.
Plugged the whole what?
@James T Kirk
Damn, already fixed... guess my post will look kind of stupid now. Vader will undoubtedly have his slaves fire an oblivion bomb at my ass.
@James T Kirk
The fbi is going to have to look into this mr kirk.
I hope this somehow becomes Apple's mistake.
@jordanbiffle
Wow, talk about hate, hating a company to the point where one wishes ill...
@jordanbiffle
Agreed.
@jordanbiffle
Get your head examined kid.
@jordanbiffle Just to indulge you, Apple's mistake is choosing AT&T to be the exclusive partner. I think having multiple US carriers would have mitigated the bad press.
@jordanbiffle I hope this somehow becomes your mistake, and you lose your job, become unemployable, causing your wife or girlfriend to leave you (if you even have either) and you end up having to turn tricks on the street just to support your crack habit.
At least it can make a mean salsa.
@leosoybean
+1
I appreciated the use of "snafu".
Federal Booby Inspector is more like it.
Shh... The boss wants to see you.
Hold on.. Hackers?? Hackers!? This was a public page on a public server.. the fact that someone wrote a script to visit that public page on that public server multiple times to build the list of names does NOT mean they are hackers.
The FBI should be investigating AT&T and their security of customer information... or lack thereof.
Hackers? Gimme a break engadget..
@fckengd
The feds probably 'googled' Goatse and got ticked off... They just don't like to be pranked.
@vulcero Not a bad as the Demi Moore bush picture, imo. I didn't get hard for weeks after that.
@vulcero one thing that i always do on hidden server: block the damn google ip
Comon Ross. These guys aren't hackers. They are security advisors. They are the good guys. You're a good editor man, don't just throw stories out there like this without clicking a few links.
Read their post about the issue.

@futuredavid It's *really* hard to bring myself to click that link. Can't you find a mirror on some other host?
If the FBI has to step in to investigate your security breach, you blew it.
@buoy
hahah
good one!
so iPads are a GIANT iPod AND security threat... got it
Hopefully they consider this an xfile and get mulder and skully on it.
Since when does the FBI get involved in hack related stuff? maybe while theyre at it, they should get AT&T to stop ripping people off and start treating them correctly, if they dont then the FBI is just nothing
@Sil
No idea, but cyberterrorism will be their reason for getting involved. Also, some high-profile people ikn the government got exposed to hackers, not good.
@Scrubs those high ones in the government that get fooled easily by media hype should not even have email,damn should not even be in government,ah should not even exist!
let's just say you don't mess with people that have lots of $_$ they can screw you! :) with all those high profile email addresses, those hackers should've let it it go.
If the FBI finds them, they're in trouble! the big boys don't play nice with kids! LOL
To be honest, I think that this is some of the haterware that some apple fanboys have been taunting at for a long time
i thought the pretentious said Apple products has no virus and absolutely secured.. Guess
@1mc What does this have to do with Apple? Last time I check, Apple didn't own AT&T, and there's been no info what system that AT&T uses.
@1mc
Thanks for reading the story. Geez, kids today.
Just because nothing of *too* much consequence wasn't taken doesn't mean the perpetrator(s) didn't commit a crime, and doesn't lessen just how big of a deal this is.
oh I'm so concerned...................
"the carrier has subsequently apologized"
Time to demand AT&T to give something back to the customers?
@pika2000
Yeh! We can start with good service.........
@Juggernaut408 and a decent phone that isnt made by apple would be nice... WinPho7 and the Mondrian can not get here soon enough, ATT's offerings are completely lacking
