Boxee Box delayed until November
We were starting to think something was up with the Boxee Box as Q2 started to fade away without any word on the scheduled launch, and unfortunately we were right: Boxee has just confirmed to us that its hotly-anticipated media streamer will be delayed until November in the US and Canada. Boxee says the original launch plan has proven to be "overly ambitious," and that the delay is purely software-related -- the Tegra 2 based hardware we saw at CES will remain the same.
If we had to guess, we'd say at least part of the delay can be attributed to Adobe, since Flash 10.1 just went final yesterday and Boxee is depending on it as a core feature, but either way, the company's goal to provide the full PC Boxee experience complete with full-res 1080p video playback from virtually any local or remote source on a small embedded platform is an ambitious one -- we've got our fingers crossed, let's hope we hear good news from Avner Ronen and crew come November.

@Playos Ummm... Netflix uses Silverlight. Moonlight is a Flash player. Seems unlikely.
@Fanfoot Yup. Looks like there's even a group devoted to petitioning Netflix to support Linux:

So anyway... You're not only off topic, you also don't know what you're talking about.
@Fanfoot A) was replying, some reason it posted up a new comment... B) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moonlight_(runtime) Moonlight is an open source Silverlight implementation for linux. It has zero to do with flash
Personally, I'm not even interested in the box. I just want that remote!
More likely it has taken the XBMC devs longer to get 10.5 Stabilized and ready for the Boxee team to slap on their skin and call it a release :) I have been building and releasing these nightly for more than 2 years and this newest build is looking really nice [r31033] I am also pretty sure a lot of it had to do with DECSS used in the dvdplayer that was compatible with the Xbox branch [ www.xbmc4box.org ]. Now that they are split though that little sticky should go away too.
I was actually waiting for this. Seems likely they were just always on this schedule and don't know what they're doing. Don't think I'll wait for this anymore.
There is a rumor that the Tegra 2 with its limited ability to play high bitrate content (official specs 10mbs - i.e. issues with Blu Ray quality files / rips) is causing headaches.
This is something basic boxes with sigma chips have been doing easily for years (Popcorn Hour, WDTV etc).

@Robinator
I don't find problems with Tegra 2 to be an unlikely source. After all it seems like every interesting Tegra 2 device is launching in November or later.
So this is what Steve Jobs meant by companies being hamstrung by Adobe's inability to deliver a fucking timely product ever. Guess Boxee's main downfall was building a house on that swamp.
Has anyone that's used Boxee confirm that it can smoothly rewind and fast-forward 1080p mkv files without stuttering/seizing like PS3 media server? My interest is hinging on this.
@Appletz
Boxee doesn't even support Rewind/Fastforward, only 30 second skip/back.
@DavidT I'm actually totally fine with that if it's quick and you're able to do it several times in rapid succession with 1080p mkv files. Anyone that's tried it have a chance to play with 30sec skipping on 1080p stuff?
@Appletz
Yep, me :) It works pretty well, it's fast, but sometimes the video will be pixelated for a second or two if you skip a lot of times in succession.
@DavidT Good to hear, thank you-- I will definitely check this out then. Last question! Can you change the subtitle options on mkv files?
@Appletz
Yep. You can enable/disable subtitles and switch between the languages available in the file.
@Engadget You're video doesn't work in the UK because (Country locked)
Though I can't say I feel I'm missing anything
The problem I have with the Boxee is that it can't do HD Audio (Lossless + multichannel). So it's a no buy for me unfortunately.
I don't quite get the euphoria about this box. It doesn't even come with a TV tuner? For HD material, do you really want to use the Internet? Windows Media Center 7 is just a much more comprehensive offering. Hopefully Boxee will get there one day.
