HTC EVO suffering from glass separation issues?
Potential bad news for EVO owners: we're seeing plenty of reports from folks having issues with the lower portions of their screens. Conspiracy theories say that the adhesive holding the glass is failing, causing the screen to peel up a bit and embark on a very slow journey to capacitive independence. This separation is causing excessive light leakage from below, a problem that we noted in our review but apparently gets continually worse as users spend more time massaging their screens -- even those not being as hard on theirs as this guy was. No official response from HTC yet and we're not sure just what a fix could be, but we have seen people do some wonderful things with duct tape.
Update: Still no word from HTC, but Troy, a Sprint employee, e-mailed us to say he's not seen any phones being brought in for this issue at his store. He also indicated the phone is a "repairable device" so, if indeed this is something HTC deems worthy of repair it could be something able to be fixed without requiring a replacement. Here's to hoping...

@methodoc
No problem. Hey, why haven't I seen a video of HTC doing video conferencing? I'm some what skeptical that it can. LOL!
@cpd5c45
What are you on?
Firstly, Apple allows Java.
Secondly, I call a metric ton of bullshit on your claim that developers don't want to develop for the iPhone/iPad because of Flash or whatever. The numbers speak for themselves. Over two hundred thousand applications in the iPhone store. They have paid over *Pinky to mouth* ONE BILLION DOLLARS to developers since the App Store's inception. There is no way that developers are giving up on the App Store.
As for the Mac, what are these control policies you have spoken of? If I want to hack my Mac, I can. I can do whatever I want with it. Hell, they're not even clamping down on the Hackintosh community.
@pspitts You have an app called "YouTube" on your phone right? Use it. Not only can you chat from phone to phone but even phone to Skype and other programs, yes, all over 3g or 4g.
Mine's not doing that at all. It's tight. I've dropped it, too, with no case. Every iPhone I've had had some separating like that, I mean geez you have to blow up a close up to even see it. Sound like sensationalism to me.
I had the same problem with my iPhone 3G
Whats the big deal? My iPhone 3G did this. Then the screen cracked and my replacement has been flush.
Engadget is on Apple payroll. HTC has better build quality than Apple... everyone knows that. All the manufacturing technology that Apple talks about ... it is all a dog and pony show. It must be because I believe it is true.
/s
@TareG The phone isn't even fucking out yet.
Oh yea and my evo still shits on the girli iPhone 4
@jaygutta6559 Yes, we are all sure that you EVO shits. Yep.
Does Spring charge extra for this feature as well?
@cpd5c45 Sprint, that is....
Haven't seen this with my EVO. Maybe a small # of defective units? If I remember, Palm Pre had the Oreo effect, iPads had wifi issues, 27" iMacs had screen issues, iPhones have had a variety of issues with the plastic backs. This is all par for the course with new technology. No need to sensationalize it in a gadget blog.
@gadgetfann
Who is sensationalising it. They're just pointing it out - what's wrong with that. They did the same thing when there were reports that the iPad had wi-fi issues.
"No problems with mine yet". Um... Didn't you all just get it like last week? That's hardly evidence for its longevity! If this is already happening to a bunch of people, and I owned an Evo, I'd be VERY concerned. It sounds like a really crappy manufacturing process over at HTC on these guys.
I swear on my life that this ppl hate HTC or Android...they're iPhone Dick suckers, cause this is the first time I've heard of it n out of all the issues I've heard on iPhone I've never heard them report it...ya fuckin haters...
@Flip35 Now, this post just OVERFLOWS with intelligence.
@Flip35 agreed, like how the other day they jumped the gun on the sprint data throttling which was BS. heaven forbid knocking almighty apple
If I started seeing people on Android and HTC forums complaining of this I'd be holding my phone to my chest praying it ain't so. You can't always expect perfection. There will be problems, and you have to be human about it and deal with it.
This sort of things happens to everyone. If you want to grab your crotch and act big and defend your phone like it's your national pride than you know what that's good on you. Just don't let the door hit your ass on the way out after you're done seeing a shrink about it if it happens to you in the future.
No problem here with my EVO
The iPhone has had several issues also--the plastic cracked at various portions of the screen, there was the whole issue with the 3G where dust easily got in the space between the screen and the glass. As a matter of fact my 3G is displaying that right now.
My friend's HTC fuze just had her speaker give out. She can no longer speak to people unless she's on speaker phone.
Problems happen and that's just life.
My EVO screen is just fine and the phone, as a whole, works even better then I expected. I have friends who also have the EVO and have yet to hear even one complaint.
Now, if I wanted to nit-pick, I could list a couple things that I wish were different. But, these would not be things that are noticed by writers (so far) simply because they do not have enough user experience with the EVO yet.
Sometimes I wonder if some tech writers even bother to touch the equipment they are writing about before publishing something.
There were a couple hundred thousand EVOs sold within a couple days. One might expect that any new product might have a problem rate of one or two percent.
However, I have not seen or heard of problems from anyone I know who actually uses an EVO daily. Rather, we mostly just talk about the utility of new apps & such. That, and we've compared a few great photos taken with the phone.
Anything mass produced is bound to have a few problem children. I love my iPhone 3G..but it's developed a crack on the back near the connector...running up higher as time goes on and I DO NOT drop it. Used to joke that is was "The Precious" lol. Glad iPhone 4 looks to be well built. Tues pre-order cant come soon enough.
I just noticed this too. I had my phone for a week, then I go to turn it on and then all of a sudden I notice this.
@zamardii12 I just returned mine because of it. People that haven't notice yet are in for a big surprise. Maybe some evo's were screen-bonded together better than others..but even still. I would hate to have returned one for another...only to face the same problem in the future.
I'm hoping that the Droid X is built like the Droid - now that thing is a tank. That's not for everyone, but I want my phone to scream technological killing machine...and be able to survive a drop or two. Keeping my fingers crossed...
So lets see if I can sum this up. There will be some people who have a flaw in their new phone. Yep, that is groundbreaking and earth shattering news.
I guess "solid phone construction" isn't a patent HTC holds.
Regarding the iPhone 4 shattered screen story, the facts on that story is that the test did not involve an actual unit; it was an empty case that was tested. Until the actual unit is tested, we won't know how durable the iPhone 4 is. But, I can assure you there won't be stores like "I can't get the back of the phone back on" or "the face is peeling off"as we're seeing on the Evo.
Epoxy cement mixed with a little black ink. Smear a little on the edges of the phone, wait 5 minutes, and problem solved! Sounds like a patent idea to me!
@cpd5c45
lol you shouldn't have to use "epoxy cement" on a brand new, $200 device
@trey992 Yeah, but just think of the possibilities! Some enterprising young person could package it up as the EVO 4G Peeling Repair Kit and sell it on Amazon for $75 a pop! Could make millions! This is an untouched market opportunity!
uh oh, this isn't good :( heh, I was thinking about getting this phone but maybe I'm glad I didn't :x
Steve Jobs just got a huge smile on his face..
@deepen03 lol
No signs of this on mine, but I'm glad I decided to pay for the insurance for the first 3-6 months... If it lasts that long I'll probably drop it, after all, after 1 year I can upgrade again. Sprint Premier ftw.
@Almo Not sure what bad news you are speaking of. Me and my girlfriend have had Evo's since lanch day and they are by far the best phones we've ever had (out of iPhone, Pre et al). Build quality is impeccable and the few complaints I've read about in the media are more than nitpicking - they seem almost like an excuse to write something - anything - controversial or negative about this awesome piece of consumer electronics. It's the best phone on the market today by far and will be for many months to come. The huge screen makes its software keyboard the first I've every actually enjoyed using. Its 4g is wicked fast. The software is rock solid so far.
What I'd like to know is how many people are ACTUALLY having this issue. Based on the quality of the Evo's we have, I would bet money it's on the order of a couple of tens of people. Typical (or probably less than so) of any mass produced product. What can I say. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by this device.
I've owned two HTC both were Dashes and both of them broke inside 3 months. Both had the metal trim around the screen peel off and one of the screens cracked in my pocket while I was watching my kids soccer game. I know these are older phones but I am very hesitant to buy HTC phones because of their build quality.
@doasis23
I had a Dash...is it agreed that it was the worst nightmare you've ever had?
And just like you, I know HTC has come a far way since then, but it now makes me hesitant to buy anything they make.
No light leakage on mine either, so far.
Getting reports from "plenty of people" on a device this new does not indicate a 5% manufacturing defect. It more likely indicates a design flaw which will be present on a large % of the devices. Bummer. This sounded like a great device. Well, with Sprint overcharging for the feature set as well as this new feature, I will be holding off for a better built and more reasonably priced offering. And for the EVO fanboys out there.....no, I am not an iPhone user. I am a current Sprint customer and was actually looking forward to getting this phone until Sprint priced it outside of reason and now this....
Real talk if you have problems with your evo bring it back to sprint swap it out free of charge unlike at&t and the iphone and Engadget you know your wrong get your facts straight first before u report thank you
@jaygutta6559 Apple does not exchange defective products that are still in the warranty period? I do believe that "your" wrong. (That would be you're for those of us who are somewhat literate)
@cpd5c45
I think you should read my comment 3 times very slow word for word than correct yourself big dummy
@jaygutta6559
I think he was referring to the first "your"
@jaygutta6559 I think you meant "then" big dummy
@PeaceWithin
I still don't get it. His first "your" is fine: "Real talk if you have problems with your evo...". It shouldn't be "you are evo", it should be "your evo", which is what he had put down. Am I missing the grammar fail here?
that's what you get when you buy a sprint phone.
@bailey12345 Sprint manufactures the HTC EVO 4G? Wow. Didn't know that.
@bailey12345
You are an idiot.
@themyst yeah htc makes this device. thats pretty common knowledge. but sprint is the company that lets it get on there network and has the ability to do the testing and quality control for their new premier flagship device. so it is ultimately sprints responsibility to make sure that it quality.
