Feeling happy for a ton of people who own EVOs that are hearing that people are complaining of different kinds of problems? Just because I pointed out the obvious doesn't mean I'm just as heartless. I feel for all of them. I'd feel terrible if I had an EVO and people were complaining about these issues.
@Paul Elmy Don't worry about that. His money is his money and yours is yours. I'm over 35 and I care as much about HTC as I do about Justin Beiber. I DON'T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT EITHER!!!!!!!!!!!!! Iphone 4 for me on launch day!
But I work with multi-touch devices on a day to day bases because thats 50% of what my company does is 3D presentation market, and I'll say that its damn near impossible to calculate 5 touches at the same time right next to each other in motion. Try this on almost any touch screen, it will have the same effect.
However, this could be improved via driver updates, but for the most part, its just about the mathematics of multi touch.
Not fake, but you can test this same thing with iPhone 3gs and you will see similar effects on occasion. I have an application on the iPhone that allows it to send OSC multitouch commands to a program called Ventuz and we see similar issues when using fingers really close to each other.
This is a problem with touch screen technology, not with manufacturing issues as much
@ryuuzaki89 LOL, the first people to bring up Apple are the usual Android trolls. This is too much! You guys have this whole love to hate thing with Apple.
Come to think of it, this might actually have been a feature, where the phone needs to be grounded for Touch events to happen. This would prevent touches to take place in your pocket.
I have an Incredible and it has done this since I have owned the phone. That being said, if it is on the table or hard surface it is fine, on a pillow or the bed, just doesn't track properly. Not a huge, it was a little annoying at first but, now it is a non-issue. LOVE THE PHONE, come on Froyo!
As I predicted in my comment in the link above, there would and have been many posts downtalking the Evo 4G over the coming weeks, after the press release of the new iPhone. Four infact, over the last four days (inclusive of this one). Now is it me, or is something fishy?
Never had an issue with my G1, Nexus One and my friends have had issues with Droid, but not the Droid Incredible. HTC phones are issueless with all my friends and I have many friends that use them. But everyone I know that bought a Droid has had issues.

@miakotamatsue My Zune HD does this too . . . it isn't deal-breaking in the slightest. I just have to make sure I'm holding it, which is what I always do anyways. Don't make something out of nothing.
Yeah, but that doesn't stop your leg from doing it. I have been butt dialed by iPhones and a few other capacitive touch screen phones for that reason.
But you're right, its probably not a feature or intentional, but it's also a pointless thing to complain about. How often are you using your phone actively on a pillow?
What's the big deal. Just don't use the top half of your phone. Bottom half seems to work great.
Also, for those haters out there, I just checked and my resistive touch screen worked great without any grounding. Now if I could just get my TP2 to run a little quicker.
@EddieN Yup...these types of issues have plagued HTC for a long time now...but as their devices are getting more and more popular, more people will start to notice them, and hopefully get them to change their tune.
Paul, firstly, I can't take anyone who uses the word 'fanboy' seriously. Secondly, I'm sure you are aware that every Apple post has 100s of little kids saying how much Apple sucks, and the only people buying are 'fanboys' and people too stupid to use a real computer.
Let's keep things in perspective here. There's kids like this on both sides, it just so happens that the Android fans are more vocal and resentful
@EddieN Fine. But can we then please stop comparing the iPhone to Android. I don't just care about the OS, I care about the product. The Android experience differentiates on each device.
Statements like Android has a greater market share than iPhone don't make any sense to me.
A few things. One, I can't imagine how you'd butt-dial an iPhone, considering you'd first have to press one of the buttons and then complete the slide-to-unlock mechanism. This seems completely impossible to me.
Also, I use my phone lying down all the time. At work, the phone sits on my desk and I answer the phone, engage/disengage the speakerphone, reply to text messages, and scroll through emails without picking up the device. I would have no tolerance for a device that only works certain times or certain ways.
This issue also would manifest itself if the phone was on a tripod, like the Gorilla-Pod. I use a video recording app quite often on mine and like/need to be able to hit buttons on the screen with just one finger while the phone sits on the tripod.
This would be a deal breaker for me, that is all I'm saying. It's a ridiculous flaw to have, considering it happens on multiple models. HTC needs to get their act together.
@ryuuzaki89 I have very minor glass lifting along the bottom and it doesn't bug me. I wasn't even aware of this issue because I always use it in hand, so it doesn't affect me.
Love my EVO and wouldn't trade it for any other phone. I'd still buy it today with the issues reported because it's amazing. :)
@ryuuzaki89 I never noticed this until I saw this article. I guess I have never used the phone sitting on my pillow. If I sit it on my wood desk it works fine but on some materials, the touch doesn't work. Sure beats batteries that blow up though.
Honestly, this is not an issue for me AT ALL. If the screen rising turns out to be common, that will be an issue but so far i'm free from any problems
Probably so, but it's not unique to HTC. I wonder what the issue will be with the first wave of iPhone 4's. The 3GS had the bizarre high-pitched noise after audio played (fixed in software somehow), the 3G had a yellowish tinge to the display (also compensated for in software), the Pre had all sorts of issues, and I can't remember what happened with the first iPhone.
My EVO does not have this issue. Its a bug that only few EVOs have, like every new product line of course there are going to be issues, stop making such a huge deal about it.
It works on hard surfaces fine. So your desk would still work perfectly. And if you are complaining that the Evo wont work on a tripod, this is also probably not the case because if it were on a tripod, it would be on a secured mount. (notice how it worked when he only had 2 fingers on it.) The tripod mount work work as those 2 fingers. the problem ONLY exists on soft surfaces like a pillow or couch cushion, and the easy fix for this is to PUSH A LITTLE HARDER.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Android fan boys cursing out Nilay/Engadget and raging at Apple in 3....2....1....
@ryuuzaki89
I guess you must be an apple fanboy feeling happy now?
@Paul Elmy
Duh. Don't you know? They demand complete homogeneity and hate any non-conformer.
@Paul Elmy

@Mike10010100
Of course, I know.
Everytime I see an article, talking bad issues about other phones than their god, apple, I see apple fanboys swarming in.
@Paul Elmy
Don't worry about that. His money is his money and yours is yours. I'm over 35 and I care as much about HTC as I do about Justin Beiber.

@ryuuzaki89 This is fake! Screw Engadget, Nilay and Apple!
@ryuuzaki89 These problems don't seem like Android issues... more like HTC quality control problems. It's a shame really.
@ryuuzaki89
Well that is likely to happen.
But I work with multi-touch devices on a day to day bases because thats 50% of what my company does is 3D presentation market, and I'll say that its damn near impossible to calculate 5 touches at the same time right next to each other in motion. @Paul Elmy
Any weakness of competitors is their strength! All hail Apple!
*We are the Borg. Lower your shields and surrender your vessel. You won't need that old ship, ours is better and shinier.*
@Paul Elmy,
Meh, the same goes for Apple posts, the Apple haters post their hate in return.
It's the same thing everywhere.
@slickpaki

@Mike10010100
Thank god, I live in a democratic country.
@corylulu
It's raining bad publicity for EVO.
@ryuuzaki89 It's not an Android thing. The HTC HD2 suffer from this issue too.
@corylulu
actually, i'll take back what i said. I didn't watch the video first, i see the issue now. I though it was something different.
@ryuuzaki89 LOL, the first people to bring up Apple are the usual Android trolls. This is too much! You guys have this whole love to hate thing with Apple.
@JKBower I know it's not an Android thing. I was just portraying what I expected to see in the comments under this story.
@ryuuzaki89 All this and not 1 article about the FTC investigating Apple
@corylulu
Come to think of it, this might actually have been a feature, where the phone needs to be grounded for Touch events to happen. This would prevent touches to take place in your pocket.
@iucidium Search is your friend.

@EddieN
HTC has a lot of problems with all their phones. I've gone through most of HTC phones and I am so glad that I didn't buy into the EVO hype.
@Mike10010100
You think that buying a different brand of cell phone solidifies your credentials as an independent minded non-conformist?
Marketing agencies dream about people like you.
@corylulu
Come on now, you know this isn't a feature.
The capacitive screen is what prevents you from activating it in your pocket.

@ryuuzaki89 Htc has always been known for crappy hardware. Get your self a moto or a iPhone 4 please. Piece of shit phones.

@fragmit People always hate on who ever is on top! People hate on Kobe, jay z, Toyota, soccer.

Thats it for me.
I am going to order a couple of new apple phones tonight.
@corylulu The HTC EVO comes with a kickstand built right in, so it is supposed to be usable when it's not in your hand.
Nilay, can you do this with a Dell Streak? Just borrow it from Richard.
:)

Kickstand is NOT supposed to be for usage, its supposed to be for video watching.
