Sony PlayStation Move motion controller
A look back on popular stories from today in a specific year.

Wonder if their servers will crash...
doubtful. with kinect being announced everyone will be waiting until nov 4
@sweet greggo
not I, PS MOVE FTW!
I've watched all the big 3's press conference and my preference goes to the ones with actual controllers for motion sensing. Much as I would like to applaud Kinect for approaching things differently, there's too many questionable stuff I see in their demos and the small lags plus the awkwardness of pretending you have something in your hand. The whole camera thing works well though with detecting the movement of your whole body but I can't see past those casual games that it will really be of good use. Between the Wii's and Sony's though, I would have to give it to Sony. I mean the demos look pretty accurate with lesser to no lag at all. I understand the Wii had a lil problem with their demos but we all know the capabilities of its controller by now. And with the PS3, you can do it in HD/3D graphics. That's just my preference though.
@illmaticstill
i doubt it. this isn't a post about apple. if it were they would of posted it like the one 2 threads above.
@Android looks Hacked Together
How is 1 controller $150? The bundle with the controller, Eye, and a game is $100. You can buy the controller standalone for 50. Even if you buy the bundle and a subcontroller, you're only paying 130... AND you get a game.
Move beats Kinect simply because of buttons. You just cannot have any kind of hardcore gaming experience without them. You just can't.
Why are you still guessing at Kinects price if two retailers list it for $149? Is that not 'set in stone' enough for ya Engadget?
@mosaicbrandon
Its only a Guess. There is no official PR from MS stating the price. Its there to just get early pre-orders.
My theory, MS waited to see what the price point of the move would be and will price accordingly. Hopefully around the $120 mark.
Wishful thinking I know, but I can dream.
if the kinects price is indeed $150 it's gonna be hard to justify multiple controllers for the move, hell the cost for the package with the eyetoy and one move controller plus the secondary (dont know the names) controller is $130 so sonys gonna be fighting an up hill battle in terms of pricing. But I expect them to sell alot,just as ms will sell plenth of kinects.
@keeb one thing I would like to know is if you can use thw kinect as an addition to a regular controller. Ex to beable to use hand controls to direct "solders" in a fps while using the controller to shoot and move.
@keeb at 0:50 Kevin Butler shows you how you shoot in the Kinect

@pintozoz yes well that may be, but I'm thinking out of the box. And to me this seems like a good idea. Or another example would be like the forza demo, but be able to use a steering wheel and turn your head, btw something you can't do in forza at the moment. Instead of just using your arms to steer, and would seem to put you further into a game then 3d with either a regular controller or steering wheel.
@Android looks Hacked Together
then why the hell is my game list so long.
Troll... i mean bot...
@keeb oh snap you can do this in GT5 for PS3 with the eyetoy.
And yet the bundle still doesn't include the PS Navigator controller which you have to buy separately.
Fucking stupid.
@arkweld
It is because the navigator thingy is optional. You can use your regular PS3 controller in its place OR pay $30 and get the navigator.
Many also don't know that the PS eye got several mics, and voice navigation is possible on it easily as well as you can play some motion games without the need for a move controller as it can track body parts in a similar fashion to Kinect. (Check the new PS3 Kung Fu game)
@Sorral
and yet there is no bundle that includes all three.
Which is. Fucking stupid.
There should be just two bundles. One with both controllers, and one with both controllers and Eye otherwise you can buy the parts separately.
Not including the Navigator as standard in a basic bundle just means less consistent game support and consumer confusion.
Which is. Fucking stupid.
@arkweld
Well, I will agree on that they should have made a bundle that way. I already have the PS eye and two regular controllers, but will still buy two Move controllers and a navigation controller.
I wouldn't mind a Move + Navigation controllers in one bundle as it will probably make them cheaper together. But I guess they were looking at Wii's nunchuck and how it was being sold separately?
Some retailers might end up doing bundles cheaper than when separately bought, Amazon did that on certain things.
kinect, if properly marketed, will blow away the sony solution....I watched a bunch of videos of people making a fool of themselves playing dancing games and race cars with kinect and to be honest it looked like a blast...better than the wii...I can only imagine what a few beers and hard liquor will do to the gameplay...
@lip agreed. Since most of the people on engadget are technology oriented and probably prefer more accurate input methods, it makes sense that some people would prefer the supposed accuracy of the PlayStation move over the Microsoft Kinect. But Microsoft is going after the casual gamer and the wii crowd with this new peripheral. All people are going to see on ads are no controllers and people just jumping around and having fun. They are trying to lower the barrier into gaming even further than Nintendo has by eliminating the controllers and I predict it will sell like gangbusters. If it weren't for the global recession I would predict Microsoft having its best quarter for their gaming division, but given the current crunch its not going to be as high as they might like.
@ravissimo This is the big problem. I bought an xbox rather than a wii, because I don't want to play casual games. I want to play actual games. Every launch title looked like absolute crap. I'm not buying the kinect until there are some actual games for it.
@nbolmer oh, no one's saying you have to buy the kinect, and i agree with you that the xbox provides more "hardcore" games than the wii. the thing is, i doubt there will be any if not just a handful of "hardcore" games for the kinect, that's not it's primary purpose though some developers will try to make some good titles (like the star wars game that was demoed). if you're holding out for a slew of hardcore kinect games though, i think you'll be disappointed (in this hardware cycle). the accuracy of the current cameras are great but the hardware is 5 years old and can't handle more than the 46-48 joints or whatever of the body. I think you'll get your "hardcore" kinect games in another 5-6 years when the kinect 2 comes out, and more joints, all the finger joints, etc. are able to be identified and has the hardware to process all of that with less latency. that's the ideal direction this is going after all - full body motion capture.
The problem the wii has is that EVERY game uses the wiimote which makes some more hardcore games not as accurate or as fun to play. the great thing about kinect is that it's trying to get the wii/casual crowd, but the xbox and playstation still have the legs for hardcore games and difficult but very accurate controls with their current controllers.
you don't need to get a kinect, but the advantage for you is that the xbox will be sold to a wider range of people, creating a bigger install base, and some of those casual gamers will pick up a few interesting hardcore titles, they just won't be as good at it. basically, you'll be able to school more people on xbox live :) win/win!
aw, i already bought the playstation eye. come on sony. don't rip me off because i bought your useless crap early!
This is going to be like the 32X add-on for the old Sega Genesis all over again.
I've decided to wait and see with Kinect. I'm not convinced that it will be as accurate as sony made Move out to be.
Much as I hate sony it looks like Move is actually really accurate and more advanced that the Wiimote will ever be.
But like others have mentioned 1 Kinect is good for 4 people while you 1Move is only good for 1 person...
@BrookLynnsFinest http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/13/playstation-move-demoed-for-30-minutes-german-style/
That's more than one guy using it if i'm not wrong.
I wish Sony would be the bigger man and include the 'sub controller' with every move wand purchase instead of aping Nintendo's method, but what can you do. Business is business.
you need a eyetoy cam that cost you need 2 move sticks that cost and it works but you can only have 3 players seeing that thats 6 blue tooth devices and the ps3 can only support 7 bt devices at once..... so you got space for 1 mic and 3 friends..... and thats over or close to 300 dollars for 3 .... 150 for natal 4 +
It always comes down to games and PS move has more potential imo. the key being the accuracy of the controller and you know, having an actual controller with buttons and stuff
@dgm6780
I don't think the accurate is of trouble but the real trouble is that do they have enough quality game to make the purchase worth while?
@dgm6780 what do you define as "comes down to"? the success of the peripheral? in that case, i think you'd be wrong. the playstation move and xbox kinect are direct responses to the success of the underpowered yet more popular wii console. If the casual gaming market wanted an actual controller and more buttons, EVERYONE would be a gamer, which isn't the case.
What it does "come down to" is which device seems like more fun to the casual user i.e. non-gamer. holding a glowing orb and waving it around like you did 4 years ago with the wii? or jumping around controller-free without needing to press even a single button? a non-gamer would not care if the kinect is not "as accurate" as the move. they're not interested in the technology, they're interested in the fun factor and ease of playing a game. xbox kinect trumps the move on both counts. the playstation move seems like a more accurate wii remote, which if used on hardcore games is great for hardcore players, but that's not the demo sony and microsoft are going after.
Well let's look at the line-up of games that are about to be released for both the Playstation Move and Kinect shall we?

I'll let you guys make your own observations about the line-up but as far as i'm concerned, having a greater sense of control over your motion-sensing games will make a big impact on gameplay.
Kinect FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@pinktacoyummm Yeah... if you want to use the best motion controlled system to play ... games for 8 year olds. Seriously. Did they port this shit from Leapster?
@nbolmer
That's the point though. Microsoft is aiming it's marketing for the Kinect directly at the demographic that made the Wii sell like gangbusters. Microsoft isn't going to forsake the bread and butter titles like Halo and Gears or CoD and the hardcore action they bring to the 360.
@Juice
Then why buy it if you're a hardcore gamer? Why would that younger demographic buy it? They probably already have a Wii! Mom and dad aren't going to shell out 300 + 150 + the price of games so they can dance around controller-less.
@packy17
Actually most of the Wii owning families I know have their Wii collecting dust because of the shovel ware. They are starting to buy Xbox 360's and PS3's. I would think the Kinect would seal the deal for the deal for a lot of them.
@Juice or the PS Move in the case of the PS3.
