PlayStation Plus announced at E3: $50 / year

And here it is! PlayStation Plus has been announced. As we suspected, the PlayStation Network itself will not change, while power users can upgrade for $50 a year or $18 for three months. And to sweeten the deal, your first three months are free. And what do you get for your hard earned dough? Tons of premium content, including "hundreds of dollars of products" throughout the year, early access to betas, and Qore. Sony is also indicating that Plus subscribers will be able to send voice messages to other gamers to invite them to play, even if they've made the foolish decision to not subscribe to Plus. Naturally, though, they won't be able to reply in kind unless they too pony up the cash.

whats your excuse now ps fanboys?
@(Unverified)
The fact that they still get the stuff they had for free.
And I don't even own a PS3.
@(Unverified)
It's for more features. Game play is still free, unlike on Live.
@(Unverified) Cross Game chat announced yet?
@(Unverified) What are you talking about? We still don't have to pay to play games online. ;P
@tklr08 I play with my brother for free on the live.
@TomPoots
I think you mean on the LAN
@TomPoots
I'm sure that's not legal.
@(Unverified) ummmm theres still a free version and the subscription version.....get your facts straight
@TomPoots
No you don't...why even say it knowing everyone will just ridicule you.
@tklr08
The PSN servers and support are crap, unlike Live.
@bravokiloromeo
Servers are fine, I never have a problem playing online, of course I play with an ethernet cord connected, not with WiFi. And I've never had any problems with my PS3, so I've never had to contact support.
@(Unverified)
they have none.
psn is free...but its a piece of shit compared to XBox Live.
I'll gladly pay $50/year for the SUPERIOR service.
@Tes oops! sorry about that! yes you are right! I used a coupon instead...
Well anyway.. those that says it's still free... how many of you are not going to pay for the extra plus? When you see the bonuses on the Live.. it's pretty nice and pretty cheap (34$ per year on amazon) anyway, I tried the live gold for a couple of days and I think it's worth it.
@tklr08
I play on wifi only for the past 3 years, no problem either.
COD4,5,6 all the time. Prestige 4 times in MW2.
I still dont understand why paying to play COD on-line....
@(Unverified) im a 360 fanboy, and even i have to agree that was a stupid comment lol... oblivioun ye shall go!
@(Unverified)
wow.. get a life fan boy
@(Unverified) all i wanna know is where is cross game voice chat on PSN? Thats all anyone wanted. Not "exclusive games and hundreds of dollars worth of shit"
@baitz4
no cross game chat? if feel a shit storm approaching...
@pbj I think them *having* a PS+ service to add features too is better than nothing. The fact that Qore is included takes the blow out of it. Qore subscribers will likely get a migration deal. I was already considering Qore, at $25/yr, that's half the cost of PS+. Now that they have the service, we can say "add this" and "add that" and they might listen.
@bravokiloromeo
Says he who doesn't know what the heck he's talking about.
Enjoy your Live, I'll keep enjoying my FREE PSN just like I have for the last few years.
There's something wrong about making users pay extra to enjoy a game to its fullest. So far Sony doesn't force you to do so.
@Unverified User Silly PS fanboys can't afford the $50 a year for xbox live lmao. They must be libtards without jobs.
@SpongeFreak52 And your online gaming experience will still be lacking...........
@tklr08
except that every new feature they add will be for psn plus members only.
@tklr08
This still doesn't even compare to Xbox Live. Don't kid yourself.
@Android looks Hacked Together
Too bad you stupid Microsoft/Nintendo fanboys can't come up with a good excuse to bash on the PS3. From this comment, I can infer that you've never played, let alone TOUCHED, a PS3. And just to prove a point, here are some titles that are currently on, or coming up for the PS3:
Ratchet & Clank Future: a Crack in Time
Resistance 2
MAG
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
God of War III
Killzone 3
ModNation Racers
Gran Turismo 5
Heroes on the Move
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
And guess what they all have in common. That's right, they're only on the PS3!
@Bobbo
I'm not sure where I said anything bad about Xbox Live. The way I comment on articles (unlike most other people, lets use Bobbo as an example) is to not bash the other product, but, I will give my opinion on the object at hand. Don't kid yourself, I'm not that person.
@bobbo
Hey you guys keep saying that but what does xbox live have thats so great? Iv never been on it so I'm wondering.
Pew! Pew! Pew!
@SpongeFreak52
And now there is premium service: PEW PEW PEW, with an exclamtion point!
Oh yaaaaaa!!!!!
THIS SOUNDS FAMILIAR.
@Colours
TYPING IN CAPS IS COOL, OBVIOUSLY! COLOURS IS A COOL GUY EH?
@tklr08
He might be...but I know you are just a jerk... :P
But seriously man, take a chill pill.
@tklr08
Yeah he once bought me a beer, it was really cold to!
Let's see how much this'll be worth. If it's shit, I'll just stay with the same old PSN account. That's the great thing about it. :]
@HikaKao
From what I've read Sony wants us to pay $50 a year so we can test their games, get patches for our games and some silly discounts. Yea right. i'll just stick to regular then.
@HikaKao
So far nothing compels me to pay for this Playstation Plus. Thank god, they are not removing functionalities from the "free PSN".
PSN will always free! Engadget , what are you smoking? Dont you know that PSN will always be free? ok, you might have to pay $50/year if need to get "some" services, but PSN is and will be free
@Rajivsri Maybe that's why I wrote: "the PlayStation Network itself will not change"
@Rajivsri nice job reading... it says Playstation Plus $50/yr not PSN... What are YOU smoking?? down you go!
"you'll own that for the duration of your subscription"
Does that mean your content will vanish after that period?
@Shrink
Yes it does, yes Sony are stupid.
@CarliT for real? I Can't believe this is legal.
@CarliT Sounds not worth it now
@Shrink While I agree it's stupid, I would liken it to a service like Netflix. I can get all the streaming I want as long as I pay my monthly fee. As soon as I don't, it's gone. Like I said, it's stupid they'd do this, but I can see why.
@Shrink The content Sony gave you for free will not be accessible after you end your subscription, anything you bought discounted however will be yours to keep.
What? No more free gaming? Come on, Sony!
@Gohawk09 Uh, what? No, gaming is still free
@Mystictrust
Dumbass, there is "Silver" which is free and then "Gold" which is $50 a year.
