We had more than a hunch that
Samsung was toiling away on a tablet of some sort, and while we'd been loosely referring to its as the
S-Pad and
Tab, it looks as if the latter moniker is the one that'll stick. J.K. Shin, president of Samsung's mobile communications division, recently affirmed as much during a sit-down with the
Wall Street Journal, stating the following:
"I can also say that we are planning to launch a tablet computer, named Galaxy Tab, no later than in the third quarter of this year."
He didn't elaborate beyond that, so we're still on pins and needles waiting to find out if it'll run Windows 7,
Bada or
BeOS, but we ought to know much, much more in just a few months. An
IFA debut, perhaps?
not goood =/

So now we have Tab and WeTab...
Great!
Someone forgot to mention Android OS. Most probably it is the os.
Meh I hope they redo the UI... Cause that looks really stupid. It's the exact same as the phone but stretched >.>
@CJisohsocool
Oh, for the pic above, I thought you were talking about the iPad :)
@CJisohsocool
Exactly what the iPad is.
@CJisohsocool
I agree. I hope they don't just scale up the icons too. I'd like to be able to put a lot more stuff on the screens, kinda like the Dell Streak.
That HAS to be Android. The skin is just like on the S.
I doubt this is going to be USA release -- just like most of their other devices samsung usually keeps them for europe and asia...we'll see how it goes but I don't have high hopes.
@DoctarPeppar
I'm thinking vaporware too, unfortunately. Remember the Samsung 700z 7" AMOLED photoframe that doubled as a seconday monitor? Haven't heard a word about it since they announced it six months ago.
me want!
If Battery life 5+ hours, Sold!
@One Love 4000mAh should be at least 7 hours if they use Super AMOLED on a 7" device, I'd be willing to say more but I wouldn't want to be the one to get your hopes too high.
It's going to run WebOS
@JonNRb no it won't.
@JonNRb
Are you joking, or an idiot?
or both?
@hunkashoo
Many of you may not know this but hunkashoo was the star on his high school debate team.
"we'd been loosely referring to its as the S-Pad and Tab"
The s-tab?
@frotal i'll just call it the Stab!
Froyo + market, please
@Energize 808 me too but we both know that is never going to happen android needs typo allow tablets typo use the android market if these android tablets are going to sell well and android us great and would work great on a tablet but without apps it just won't sell well I guess we can always hope that developers will be interested in side loading their apps like some smartphone developers are doing on android now but from what I hear they are just ports of apple iOS games and some aren't even working right. I know my fingers are crossed for this AMOLED android beast its def caught my attention this past couple weeks and after rocking froyo on my nexus one for the past couple weeks I can't imagine going back to eclair
I could be wrong, but I have a feeling this Tablet Era redux will come and go with the iPad, in other words it will be a one-brand, one-model market that'll last as long as said product is supported (2-3 years perhaps?). My hunch is based on 1) competition is anemic, and no competition means impending buyer boredom, 2) ULV chips on notebooks means smaller and longer-battery notebooks (fully-capable computers as opposed to media-consumption machines), 3) bigger handsets (EVO, Droid) are blurring the lines of form factor.
@shishi I haven't seen a tablet yet that just screams "buy me".
like i said before, at least the Samsung unit looks to be able to make phone calls... iPad can't do that.
@darkmax iCall, Skype
Galaxy Tab Tablet will never get tiresome to say.... never!!!
@Wesscoast I guess that's meant to be a joke, hopefully within it you realized it's only Engadget calling it that, and maybe to be cute the way they like to be.
All Samsung calls it is the Galaxy Tab, and I'd be willing to bet people are more likely to say "iPad tablet" than "Galaxy Tab Tablet" by a factor of at least 36.8 fold.
Can't they really make their bezels thinner? It's a waste of precious real estate :%
I could see a 7'incher work as both a phone and everything for some people.
What they need to do is update the look of the device and drop touchwiz.
See no one's mentioned DOS with an on screen keyboard. ;-)
That's nice and all but I hope it is a decent size.
I am not with all these 5" and 7" tablets.
What is the point?
I can't fit that reasonalby into a pocket very well anyway (maybe the 5").. so why not give me some actual usable real estate on the sole output of the device - the screen.
I am looking for 10" at least or hopefully 12" screen.
Also.... mirasol or pixel qi or somebody with something of a way forward in the screen department so I could actually use it in 90% of the lighting conditions people actually find themselves in without holding it 'just so' to view the screen would be great !!!!
@savagemike They are making 3 sizes, this is the first to ship.
V A P O U R W A R E ! ! ! !
BeOS. That was really cute :D. How about it run AmigaOS 4.1 :D
