Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 caught on video looking like a giant cellphone
Ready to see Samsung's 7-inch Tab tablet do its thing on video? Sure you are. However, this isn't the same Galaxy Tab that we saw in the picture teased by Samsung. First of all, it has a different collection of Android-friendly "buttons" along the bottom and seems to be void of Samsung's TouchWiz UI skin. It's also carrying a P1000 model number. Well, at least the 7-inch Super AMOLED remains the same. See the quick action go by in a blur after the break.
P.S. The dialer pictured above seems to confirm that the Tab can be used like a giant phone. No, really. We've heard this previously as rumor but didn't believe it until now. The second video perfectly illustrates the reason for our concern. [Thanks, Saad]

Quite blurry, but it looks very much like a Droid from some angles, only bigger.
@buoy
omg... this or notion ink adam?!??!?!
that being said it looks very smooth and responsive. more videos please!
The quality is immense!
@buoy
nice, i wanna get one
@buoy Its too long, makes me feel insecure with my man hood.
@Corriewf it is quite long as you've pointed out - which would suggest it's highly likely to be one of 2 resolutions for 16:9 aspect ratio... either
1. 1024 x 576; or
2. 1366 x 768.
i'm hoping it's the latter. if it's less than that, gosh... that would be a downer.
@buoy that's what she said ;-)

@buoy Engadget, really? Judging if it has Touchwiz by seeing the app launcher and 1 app, I think you aren't familiar with Touchwiz at all which makes me wonder how you can constantly criticize it.
@Edmunn
Are we really thinking that this screen size is going to be sufficient?
Also, I have to admit that I'm not really interested in this device since I have an Android phone. I mean, like the iPad, what can this do that my phone can't?
I seem to be alone, but I still want something more like win7 on a tablet.
@juanvaldez
yea, the menu i saw was touch wiz, i didn't understand how they dudeced it as being vanila Android. Glad someone saw that too.
@buoy : Battery life?
@Zylam Really, the laughable part is, now that they've reviewed the Galaxy S they've actually done some Touchwiz praising. I think they'd still prefer Sense, though they didn't really say or imply it, but they did comment on quite a few things (though most could probably be done by apps rather than skins).
Still, maybe we can stop actually bringing up Touchwiz in the sense of this is a non-starter (I still think they should rush to dump it whenever an Android update comes out, and then try to re-incorporate Touchwiz after they get it working with the new model). But, if it can add functionality for a short period of time and they can add a procedure to update to vanilla, all companies should skin (both of these are asking too much in the foreseable future, but I can dream).
Soo, since it has a dialer I assume it works just like the Streak: able to make calls but not the primary purpose of the device?
Still, very cool! Wonder what the resolution is.
who will use this as a phone??
@rehan716 I would, if needed.

@Saad OMG, added video. Thanks Saad.
@rehan716 I would happilly. A secondary phone.
@nnata
Would you get a second phone number and voice plan?
@rehan716
people with bluetooth headsets.
@rehan716
I could see using it as a home phone with a bluetooth headset or bluetooth speaker phone.
@rehan716 I will be using it as a phone with my bluetooth headset.
Doesn't look bad! Just hope it will be running latest and greatest android and be able to use all 3G bands.
you know when people complain about your articles about insignificant apple "news", it doesn't mean you should do the same with other products
seriously, what new information did this offer to anyone?
@mrqs
"seriously, what new information did this offer to anyone?"
Maybe, a video of it working for the first time, you numb nuts.
@Saad
right, because we didn't know it'd actually work
it doesn't even have the ui it's said to ship with - wtf could you learn from that blurry clip?
@mrqs
Chill, bag head! If you think that this adds nothing to you then move along. I for one am happy to see this news. Jeez.
@mrqs
Why do you get so worked up over engadget articles, is your life really that empty? If you're not interested just move on, the post will not follow you or laugh at your short commings.
@tobsmonster2
i just felt the need to bitch about this rare occurrence of a non-informative article that isn't apple related (or rather wasn't, before the ipad clip was added) in fairness to all the bitching in similar apple related ones
@mrqs "Everything I needed to know I learned in kindergarten" ...like 2 wrongs make a right.
@juanvaldez
if you read the first sentence of my first post, you'll see that's not what i was going for
@mrqs So, I can only take your point if you agree with the people who say those things...with your first sentence of your first line you did a bit of distancing yourself from those people. Now, if you don't agree with them, and see how those people appreciate those articles, then you fall victim to what I've said.
@juanvaldez
i do agree with those people (i've been "those people" myself on more than one occasion) and i realize that with my comment i distanced myself from them, in that this wasn't a comment about engadget being biased towards apple, but a more general comment about useless articles
my point is, there have been plenty of articles about stuff that really didn't need an article, but now that this one isn't apple related i seem to be the only one taking note of this (as evidenced by not only lack of comments on the subject, but also the downranking of my comments)
A Slightly unrelated thing. Woohoo, the vid is html5 no crappy flash.
More related. Looks okayish the Samsung tablet, but then again I think S-AMOLED is crap.Waiting for the Adam to become reality.
They just add phone functionality so Google lets it access the marketplace right?
@gersam
That, sir, is a pretty smart comment.
I wonder if that's indeed the reason, and if Google will fall for it. But if they do, that would by a nice chance for many other manufacturers, since most of them already have 3G radios on their devices. Just stick a dialer app on them and then call Google and tell them it's no longer a tablet but a pretty big mobile phone.
@summerboy18
Sure does!................Well except for the 16:9 SAMOLED screen, USB, better OS, etc., etc.
@summerboy18
Yeah, and all Chinese people look the same.
if this is a phone, I'm no longer getting the mini 5 / streak. This would be EPIC!
Not to burst anyone's bubble, but as I said before: No full OS, not a tablet; just a bigger phone with less capabilities like the iPad.
They should create a new category for such devices, maybe: Phonblet or Tabone.
@Saad
Agreed. No point in getting one of these if you already own a smartphone.
And all the idiots said the Droid X was huge.
And this is the reason why I would get this for a tablet than droid x because if I'm looking for a bigger screen, this would fill my android fix better than the droid x. If there's a bigger version (as I've heard) then I would have to rethink which would fit my needs and lifestyle better. That's if ever I do need a tablet.
V A P O U R W A R E ! ! !
I'm mostly impressed that super AMOLED has evolved quickly enough to be mass produced at 7 inches. Otherwise, I don't see anything in this video..
The second video is funny; no one's ever heard of bluetooth headsets?
I can think of two things that a tablet needs that the iPad doesn't have: built-in memory card reader (sd, of course), and the ability to print.
@toddjy: The iPad already has a built in card reader. It just costs 150 and requires a little super glue to build it in.
And the iPad can already print. Ever heard of a copier?
/s
Haha, the second vid is pretty funny. Haha.
