webOS 1.4.5 reportedly coming any day now... except for AT&T users
As friends very near and dear to us have confessed, "soon" is a relative term. If you'll recall, we heard from Palm (in)directly that the next webOS update was "coming soon" back in the early days of May, and here we are a fortnight from July without so much as an update regarding the update. Well, without an official update. A source over at Pre|Central has confirmed that a release of webOS 1.4.5 is "imminent," and while the primary purpose will be to get a better handle on PDK apps, it's also expected to finally bring 3D gaming to the oft-forgotten Pixi. Purportedly, carrier testing on the new OS is just about wrapped, with one unnamed operator waiting for a small bug to be squashed and AT&T simply waiting for waiting's sake. At any rate, we're still left twiddling our thumbs and hoping for the best, but at least we've a sliver of hope that our patience is about to pay off.

Spiffy..
@BHFoster
Maybe in this update the webOS can send the CEO a cease and desist letter for their crappy new data plans everytime it boots up.
AT&T is everyone's favourite network this week, huh?
@sockatume
Very sad indeed. At&t used to be my favourite company. Now they just i dunno :/
@sockatume Funny thing, we just switched last week from AT&T to Sprint. Much better IMO.
@Mike Vick
good lord att. Apple has handed them a silver platter and they still can't get their act together. Between being super slow at pushing updates, crippling every android device they can get their hands on, and screwing up security issues making apple look bad, they are running around like a chicken without a head
@sockatume I switched our corporate accounts to AT&T from Verizon, because, at the time, AT&T seemed to be better in many areas and had better phones. Since then, AT&Ts phone line up has become crap compared to everyone else. They get Palms and don't update them. They are passing over all of the great Android phones for mediocre low end models that they then cripple and put their own crapware on. Not to mention all of the other problems they've had with their network, and customer service. In the last two years AT&T has turned from decent into utter crap. They are in serious need of some new management.
@dan828 yup, they went from Cingular+at&t to old AT&T. Just the effects of the merger finally kicking in with most of the original Cingular people gone.
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!
Bono took the money and ran.
Typical of AT&T - last at phones and last at software.
(Remember when the Treos were coming out and Sprint/VZ got them first and then a year later when there were better models out AT&T got the first models?)
They'll probably release it - "Unsupported." They pulled that crap with the HTC FUZE and they'll pull it again.
@dragonfli
Agreed. AT&T has eyes for only one phone.
Palm should be working on 2.0 and new hardware. Times a wasting..
@cardfan 100% agreed. If they had evos in stock I wouldve dumped the pre by now
@cardfan - Palm will do whatever HP tells them to do.
@MFrasier Sprint.com has stock now.... No more excuses!
@cardfan Exactly! Please release a new WebOS device on Sprint (new hardware) before my current Pre finishes falling apart on me.
@MFrasier You may want to hold out on that EVO purchase. There seem to be some build quality and screen issues.
There should be a bunch of fixes/enchantments on this update since its taken about 2* as long for it to come out comapred to thier other ones...
On a side note... all Pre users should be trying out the new Compcache Kernal... unbelievable performance! with no TMC errors!!

@MrKal_El
@mrkalel Lol... I needed to spell check that post
@mrkalel I read somewhere that the 1.4.5 update was going to have gpu acceleration.
@mrkalel: Can't thank you enough. Ive seen it in the forums but never jumped on board.
I can finally launch settlers without having to restart.
I noticed that sometimes it takes some time to launch, but thats because Comcache is writing the memory blocks so the game can be launched. Definitely worth installing for any Pre owner, even if you are worried about breaking your phone (trust me, you wont).
HPalm is going to be an excellent partnership
Can't wait until we see webOS 2.0 with new hardware.
@dcoaster
I agree... I *really* CAN'T WAIT much longer...let's go palm, announce the c40 already so I can look past the 80 droid phones coming out in the next three months.
Jeesh... AT&T customers are constantly getting kicked in the groin...! I don't know why anybody would want to stay with them...
I mean, the iPhone is a solid offering (do AT&T customers even use any other phones besides the iPhone?!) but c'mon...
They need hardware and sales, not software updates...
I'm sorry I only have 1.4.1.1 WHERE THE HELL IS .2 THROUGH .4 AT? My phone says I'm up to date or is this for the Plus ass phones. I'm on sprint and have Pre Gen 1 so anyone have any info about how they can jump from 1.4.1 to .5?
@saxgod
Is this a serious question?
@saxgod
Your right its a big increment but its the next one up from what ur on.
@Sweet Dude
hehehe
@Sweet Dude Yea it's a serious question. If you are gonna put out an update and not follow numbering schemes then yea it irks my OCD brain. Why not just wait and call it 1.5 instead of 1.4.5. It suggest to me that 1.4.5 is just a crappy update because if it was a big one it would be 1.5 right?
@saxgod Wow! So this really was a serious question. Man, obviously have no idea how software revision number schemes work. It doesn't make sense to put out updates for every change. The only reason you received a jump from 1.4 to 1.4.1 is because it was necessary. There were bugs in 1.4.
@saxgod Well internally Palm have gone through 1.4.2, 1.4.3, etc
They found bugs and added fixes as they saw fit, and update the version numbers as they did so.
Why do you seriously care what the number iteration is? It's like complaining about apple still being on 10._._ for their OS - they charged $30 for Snow leopard but didnt up the version number to 11, ZOMG!! I cant live with that!!!
So go on - just enjoy the update and stop caring about the @#$ number!
@Phenom I care about the number iteration I told you I'm OCD about that kind of stuff. Like I said though find all the bugs then release don't release .4.x just get it all fixed (unless the customer finds the flaw) and update it to .5. That is the logical way to do it. I highly doubt WebOS will have a free tethering app but that would be cool. I have to use a workover just to get MT to work properly and I'm not gonna put Mobile Hotspot on there because well I'm lazy and MT works fine lol. Ok sorry for boring everyone lol. But it was half a joke so calm down. No need to cuss me out for number iteration of a software update lol
@saxgod Quit. Fucking. Talking.
@Mister Warmth Wow Mr. Warmth don't mean to be a stickler here, but shouldn't it be Quit. Fucking. Typing? or Thinking?
@saxgod
I bet you're a blast at parties.
Can I get a freaking hardware rumor HP/Palm....I mean yeah I'm committed to the iPhone 4 but it wouldn't hurt to know that I could get a webOS phone down the road as a backup or secondary phone....
@BrookLynnsFinest Not until the sale happens, expecting a sneak peak at something soon after that though :)
@BrookLynnsFinest
Rumor on precentral boards is a new 4G palm is due out in 3Q/4Q, 4 inch screen, 720p, etc.

@lelander
Oh yeaaaaaaaa!!!! Jizzed in my pants!! =P 4G FTW!
(I was actually goin to preorder an iphone4 and use that as my exlusive work phone, but I cannot deal with AT&T's plans.... AND the horrible service. Maybe take it over to Tmo? I've had no complaints with Sprint, Tmo, or Big Red, but AT&T is just CRAP. Yet, they manage to be the sole carrier to the iphone..... aint that a b*tch. I'll wait.... =\
To late Palm. I jumped off the Pre sinking ship already. Every update just added more lag, nothing else
@jsbaugh Bullsh*t, you're obviously a troll. Every update brought huge improvements. Ever consider restarting your phone once a week?
Guessing you leave your computer on 24/7/365?
@Phenom No troll. I have had the Pre a year and nothing but a pain in the ass and yes I reboot the phone every other day just to clear the lag. Only thing I liked was the notification system.
@Phenom
I don't have to restart my pre, it does on its own like 20 times a day. I still love my pre but i can't handle the random reboots anymore.
@jsbaugh I have had my Pre a year and love it. It does fine if you stay away from homebrew.
WebOS is sooo sexy... i just wish they'd put on an EVO-like phone.
WebOS is a great operating system. It needs to be tweaked a bit, but the for the most part its a great OS. It just really lacks any app development. I really hope this new update will attract more developers, and hopefully HP creating more products running WebOS will attract them as well.
@mcbeaven
WebOS is a great LOOKING OS, but it has too many issues. It still feels like 1.0 and it's really not competitive anymore.
@Spaceshipped
WebOS isn't competitive? What's your basis for this? As far as I can tell WebOS is still far ahead of other major OSs based on multitasking, notifications, UI and ease of use. I'd love to hear how it has become stale.
And don't try the app number argument. That has nothing to do with the OS.
