webOS 1.4.5 reportedly coming any day now... except for AT&T users
As friends very near and dear to us have confessed, "soon" is a relative term. If you'll recall, we heard from Palm (in)directly that the next webOS update was "coming soon" back in the early days of May, and here we are a fortnight from July without so much as an update regarding the update. Well, without an official update. A source over at Pre|Central has confirmed that a release of webOS 1.4.5 is "imminent," and while the primary purpose will be to get a better handle on PDK apps, it's also expected to finally bring 3D gaming to the oft-forgotten Pixi. Purportedly, carrier testing on the new OS is just about wrapped, with one unnamed operator waiting for a small bug to be squashed and AT&T simply waiting for waiting's sake. At any rate, we're still left twiddling our thumbs and hoping for the best, but at least we've a sliver of hope that our patience is about to pay off.

@Spaceshipped I want some of what ever your smokin..
@Spaceshipped
I've owned the Pre for nearly six months and agree that there is some truth to your comments.
WebOS has a beautiful design and is quite functional but it has many issues. Anyone who says that the phone doesn't lag, particularly in comparison to the iPhone and recent Android offerings, clearly hasn't used the operating system. As well, it is quite buggy and lacking in applications.
Look, I very much like WebOS, but I can't see it remaining competitive with the choices from Apple, Google and Microsoft. While HP does have the resources of those companies, it simply doesn't have the experience with developing relationships with the developers that those other companies do. Android and iOS are simply moving too fast for HP and Palm to catch-up. In fact, if it weren't for Microsoft's vast development resources and competitive spirit, it would even be difficult for them to cath-up too.
@Unbiased I have used iOS and Android. WebOS spanks both of them. The phone itself sucks, but IMO there is no comparison. IOS 4 may get a lot closer now that Apple will have real multitasking.
Where the fuck is new hardware. Dam you palm
@young hov 718
all I want is a rumor! it's been months since the c40 rumor has even been mentioned!
@sweet greggo
what I hear from insiders is that the new phone is gunna have a touchscreen and make phone calls soooo fast
In a world with android & IOS who needs webos?
@FrankDTank
Probably because it's the best mobile OS out there? Apple didn't snag the genius behind the notification system for nothing. But honestly the card system + notifications = easiest and most efficient multitasking currently available.
@FrankDTank
I have to agree. Everyone will have their likes and dislikes about everything. Android and webOS are a lot more open then Apple is, and that is a dealbreaker alone for many. Plus, altho I cheated and now smitting w/ android (Love it, yes I do), I still have a soft spot for webOS! ;)
1.4.5?? Who cares.. Where is Flash??.. Where is the new Hardware? What are they doing at palm these days?
As a Pre owner the only thing keeping me from jumping ship is the lack of EVO's for me to buy.
@Tomguruken36
1. Look to Adobe for Flash. THEY are the ones holding that up....
2. I suppose we will not hear about new hardware until the deal goes thru completely at the end of the month... so stay tuned....
@Dellibedaboss You're right.. it's adobe's fault..
I'm considering jumping the palm ship to the EVO let the lady have the prē
@boballistic Sadly I'm in the same boat. I love WebOS but as I've stated here before my Pre is literally falling apart and I doubt it will make it until my contract is up next March. Common HP/PALM! Just tell me SOMETHING is on the way!
webOS is easily the best mobile OS for the basic tasks. I tried Android and I was horrified, I actually returned my Evo and went BACK to my pre. No, I am not on palm's payroll, just I have gotten so used to webOS I can't seem to like anything else. I would love new hardware along with webOS 2.0. I believe that webOS 1.5 will be the last feature addition to webOS 1, and then they will start finalizing 2.0. I would love new hardware though. Like, a tegra 2 or the latest TI processor. No snapdragons please, honestly those are overrated.
@Schmid7y
Amen, bruh. Amen. I'm actually liking the EVO and Android tho, and will consider webOS later this year *if* they release some new hardware then. HPalm doesn't have tie to waste as iPhone release is around the corner, and Android devices are dropping like candydrops, in all sorts of flavors....
@Schmid7y I am sure that was just a typo. You meant 1.4.5, not 1.5.
I've had 1.4.5 for almost a month now...
@amnesia How is that? Are you a developer?
@rlopin turns out I have a developers unit. (I test mobile phones) Silly me, thought that I had a standard device and also thought that the firmware was pushed out to everyone already.
@amnesia how are the performance and battery enhancements? Any GPU acceleration in the UI?
@quarleslt I've never played with any WebOS device before jumping straight onto 1.4.5
It's quite fast, although sometimes I notice a lag when I want to hang up a number or if I'm doing something and someone calls and I click answer.
Is there anything in particular you have questions about? I could take a video of the phone?
New hardware and flash. Anything else is insignificant on the WebOS front. But can't really blame Palm 4 flash. But ditto, I'm moving from webos 4 a year 2 check out the fanfare on android. I'll b back!
It seems that this "except for AT&T users" phrase is being heard an awful lot lately. Everything APPLE has this phrase attached to it! With the U.S. being the home market for Apple, you would think Apple would lower the hammer on AT&T and say, "Look guys, get your sh*t up to par or you'll be in breech of contract...we're giving you 90 days to offer all iPhone related services and then we're calling Verizon."
How does AT&T keep customers when they are obviously lacking in just about all areas compared to all of the other cell providers??
By the way, I understand that WebOS is not Apple related. I'm just giving another example of AT&T's epic fail. They're biggest one, in fact.
@trekrema Hey what am I supposed to do. I'm getting slammed for complaining about numbering. I love the Pre. I WISH the EVO got formatted and had WebOS installed on it. I wish you guys didn't hate me so much. Even a guy name Mister Warmth said shut the fuck up....OUCH. I'm not trying to be an ass. I love Pre guys. I was happy when HP bought but then cried when I saw all the creators leave for Apple and Google.
I'm looking forward to this for my Pixi. :) SDL should bring working X11 support, too, or the ability for me to add it myself.
