2011 Hyundai Equus user manual to be pre-loaded on a custom iPad
We thought of theiPad as soon as we first heard the 2011 Hyundai Equus would come with its user manual preloaded on a "multimedia tablet" instead of being printed out, and it looks like our hunch was correct: our friends at Autoblog have confirmed that Hyundai will be shipping a 16GB WiFi iPad with every Equus. The iPad will be packaged in a bespoke leather case with an embossed logo, suede interior, and even kickstand -- which'll come in quite handy as the user manual comes complete with video tutorials for many of the car's functions. Updates to the software will happen through iTunes, and the iPad sounds pretty stock otherwise, so that's a nice little perk. Just don't use it while you're driving, okay?

if this is the selling point for some people to buy this car im going to smack them.
@trippedout i agree... :)
@trippedout
I concur man.. IF it happens, (an im sure it will), definitely will be a pathetic day in car buying history!
@trippedout
Have any of you seen the price of Hydundai's latley? They have gone mad. Anyone who pays more the $12,000.00 for ANY Hydundai is insane and now they have Hydundai's for like $40k +
Thats INSANE!!!
@TheJason
All I read was "hurr durr I'm stuck living in the past".
@trippedout
It's not just for car buying either. At my work they have the biggest Macs available on reception. I asked my boss why as there's no other macs in the company, no reason for receptionists to have all that screen real estate when nobody in the rest of the company has screens that big and they were running windows anyway...he replied with "just to look good to clients" -_-
I feel sad for the world when pointless stuff like this is what sways people.
@ilh Sex sells, & Macs are sexy.
@Robbzilla crappy car and crappy tablet.
@trippedout I agree that a bundled iPad is a pretty stupid selling point for a car, but on the other hand it's definitely a nice feature and perhaps this way some people will get an iPad even if they wouldn't otherwise consider buying one.
@trippedout Yeah, this isn't a perk...this is saying here lets add another 1000 onto the cost of the car, but you won't even notice since its less than 2% of the total cost.
@ilh It's really not a conscious appeal, more subconscious
@avengeryarr
Your just mad cuz you bought a POS garbage car. Its ok, maybe next time you wont waste your $40k on a car thats only worth $10k
@TheJason
Have you ever driven a Hyundai? Seems like you have something against South Korea. At least their brakes work.
Brilliant concept. For once I might actually read the manual.
@Mg12 Perhaps, but I'd rather save the money and get the car without the unnecessary tech expense. Give me a PDF on a thumbdrive if you must.
@ArcSyn
You can be serous. It adds about or less than 2% to the price of the car. If that's tight on the wallet you shouldn't be getting it in the first place.
@ArcSyn
You can't be serious.
@ArcSyn
if a thumbdrive is your expense range i'd suggest a few other cars to look at.
@Mg12
I agree. Most (maybe not all) auto manufacturers should do this with many (but not all) of their cars.
And while they're at it, they should give you the choice of which model of iPad you want, since technically, the cost of it will be absorbed in what you're paying for the car.
@DogStar
But of course, this must be and should remain, an option.
And a printed version should always be standard no matter what (for use as a backup to the iPad or for those who don't wish to dole out another $500).
hahat that's awesome.
Wish it comes along as built-in..
If they could make the navigation systems like that too, you would have one pimp car.
Its "Hyundai", this goes well with the "Long Island Road Road"
@CTTHosting Wait this is confusing me.
@CTTHosting Yes you appear highly confused... If you need something to do that badly I can send you a book full of typos for you to correct
If you had navigation systems as good as an ipad, you would have one beast of a car.
@deliteguy
Until you drive your "beast of a car" our of cell range and the great iPad cant download map data from google.
look who stepped up their game
While very interactive and a guarantee that the manual will not get lost. This is just an excuse for the car company to tax on $2000 dollar to the price
@purebishop
What a douche-bag comment. After all the quality posts he does and hours he spends flicking through legal documents to bring us info, he gets called out like that for a tiny typo? WTF man.
@Almo The lack of professionalism and poor writing is commonplace among popular tech blogs. Don't act surprised.
Now if only VW and Samsung could partner up and ship new VW's manuals on thatnew Samsung tablet .....
@purebishop you could have been a little humane... but terrible typo for you Nilay.
And this from a company that started with the Hyundai excel!!! Go Hyundai!!! Plus that car is sexy..
@purebishop Chill out dude!
So I guess the iPad is now a commodity.
Also, this is ridiculous.
I had the idea of the iCar with one of those screens on the dashboard, except it has iOS and some kind of apple navigation that they could release with iPhone too, maybe google maps nav? And then the car would be all electric, and you can sync it with iTunes haha...hey Hun can you move the chair I need to plug the car into the computer...and the all new I home for your iCar!
It's stupid not to have the printed manual as backup. An iPad is not going to last the 10 years a car will. It will get broken, lost, or stolen before then. I would also not count on it to be charged when the car breaks down on the side of the road and your truly need the manual.
@Game_Ender
Printed manual? PDFs man, it's 2010 now.
@Game_Ender This is exactly what I was thinking. Also the ipad might not even be in the car when you need the manual because of its other uses. And thieves will know that these cars probably have ipads in their glove compartment which will result in them looking for these cars. It's really just a bad idea all together.
@Game_Ender
A paper manual isn't going to be there 10 years later either, and doesn't come with a backup. I imagine that just like with paper manuals, Hyundai will be happy to sell you a replacement or will make paper or PDF copies available. If you've seen what dealers charge for replacement printed manuals, an iPad doesn't sound like a terrible idea.
"It will get broken, lost, or stolen before then"
And a regular manual will be damaged, lost, or stolen before then, too. You're trying too hard.
As for breaking down on the side of the road--nobody with the skill to fix anything would EVER need the for-dummies service information in a car's user manual. Everybody else pays the $10/year for roadside assistance.
wow that car looks sexy
What happens when you forget to turn off you lights, your battery is dead, and your owner's manual is dead?
That reminded me to charge my owner's manual for my Odyssey. Oh wait my manual doesn't need power. Silly me.
@ty1911
You bring the owner manual inside and charge it there....
Jesus, just take $500 off the price of the car and put the manual on a frickin' USB stick. What a total gimmick to compensate for a ho-hum car.
@Marmite Turkey
You should check out this ho-hum review and pictures.....

@Anthony2612 Fair enough, nicer than I thought. I don't associate Hyundai with premium automobiles (that's going to be a problem for them when they come to sell this thing, and might even explain the iPad - as a positioning stunt).
Still, if they're trying to keep the price below $60k, as the article suggests, why not ditch the ipad? Or spend that money on something related to the car?
@Marmite Turkey
Hohum car? It has been universally praised. The only thing ho-hum about the car is the Hydundai name.
@Joao
Hyundai isn't the company they used to be. That new Sonata is sexy as well.
