Apple has traditionally been -- how shall we put it --
cagey with revealing memory and CPU specifics of its mobile devices, but
MacRumors is today reporting its discovery that the fourth-gen iPhone's RAM apportionment will be a very healthy 512MB. We've heard similar rumblings from reliable sources of our own. What it means is that iPhone 4 users can look forward to not only the
same processor (though potentially at a lower speed) as their
iPad compatriots, but also
double the memory allowance. Of course, this will hardly be the first handset to offer half a gig for the OS to dance inside, but at least Apple's keeping up with the times. Wouldn't wanna disappoint all those
pre-orderers now, would we?
@bathellfire Even though technology is going faster than ever and always being updating at unspeakable speeds with amazing improvements, to be honest I think there isn't going to be as much drastic advancements in the next 10 years as it was these 10 years, in my opinion I think technology might slow down if anything, because we've all really hit such a high chord and it's going to take a while before any big breakthroughs comparable to the ones that took place this decade can happen.
Not that iOS wasn't snappy before, but hopefully the new 512 MBs puts to rest the claims of the superiority of SnapDragon by Android-ers.
Wow talk about fanboyism run wild. Nevermind video after video showing the smoothness of the Incredible and review after review calling it the smoothest and snappiest phone out there the Apple fanboys still sell wolf tickets like somebody is going to believe it. I also watched alot of footage of the Desire to see how the Incredible might perform before it dropped and its was nothing but smooth. In fact theres a vid out there with a guy opening app after app after app and then opening Google Earth and running it smooth as butter. Yet here are all these folks claiming all this choppiness. People claiming choppy browser operation when video after video of head to head comparison shows no difference and a faster render time and time again by the Incredible. Its gotten to the point the Apple folk are just pulling stuff out of thin air. Now this is with non-JIT compiled Java and no V8 Javascript engine on similar hardware.
And not only that they swear the iPhone is so amazingly smooth. Listening to all the hype I was quite shocked to watch my coworker try to simply swipe his home screen for it to lag and he even swiped it again. And this is obviously with no multitasking.
The other thing that kills me is how no one has caught on to what "multi-tasking done right" has really meant. "Done right" means they had to get the hardware specs that everyone else has to do it. It would be something special if all of the iPhones could do it but Jobs himself said the older hardware couldn't support it. People running around repeating this "done right" thing have really fallen for some very obvious marketing.
@Blaque14K
I agree. Both Android and ipod / iphone have lag. I find the iphone incredibly ove-rhyped.
However, the point of this post is the increase in flash memory that Apple will need to support multitasking. They are doing a good thing. Good job Apple, but I still prefer Android.
@Blaque14K
Android has come a long way since 1.5 on my old g1. But I wouldn't go as far as saying it's the smoothest ui(I know you said the reviewers mentioned that). It's all on what you think is smooth I guess. Personally, I've tried the incredible(my buddy got one and had no idea what android was when I asked him). And it was sorta smooth..but nothing to write home about. It lagged quite a bit when swiping shortly after closing a program. Cameras are only as good as the sensors. Megapixel are relevant when printing big ol photos..anywho to each is own I suppose. Emotions get you nowhere though
@Good Times I think people confuse smooth with the slick animations that the iPhone uses. They are slick I admit and Android pretty much doesn't use them. Maybe they can't but I don't miss them. However I smoothly get from task to task in Android except where an application obviously has to do some loading or processing up front but thats the same for the iPhone. In fact didn't the iPhone at one time (if not now) load an image of the app you're opening while the app loaded so that it looked like it opened smoothly?
@Blaque14K go put a "skin" on your Droid devices to mask the ugliness of the Android OS! Good luck updating your phone when they become available from Android.....you'll be at the mercy of the device manufacturer. Not to mention, those skins fuck with the snappiness and multitouch accuracy and performance. FAIL. You're like the guy that can't afford or get a Porche, so you trash it and claim your Toyota Camry to be superior b/c it has more features built into it. Go back to your hole, Troll!
I wonder how many people are going to upgraded to ipad 2 which is basically going the be the iPhone 4 just bigger and without calling features.
@Mofetti The same type of people who are going to get an Android tablet which is the same as with a bigger screen minus the phone. Or perhaps the same people who will buy the Samsung tablet which is basically the Galaxy S with a bigger screen PLUS the phone.
You're all missing the point. They added more memory so it can support flash. The reason why jobs hates flash is because he knows it can run well on 128 or 256 MB.
That's way my iPad always crash when I watch Videos and play games",",,,,,
Oh and by the way, I *do* feel cheated owning an ipad with only 256MB
@(Unverified) Yea Men That's way my iPad always crash when I watch Videos and play games",",,,,,
@WirelessDJ
Don't feel bad I bought the original iPhone on launch and wasn't to happy at the price drop a few months later. The $100 gift card helped though. Hopefully they will do something like that for iPad buyers, because when people start making apps for that 512 the 256 ipad people are going to have problems, unless apple has a way to use the SSD to compensate.
I'm glad she is having such a great holiday
Yet another case where Apple just proves their dominance.
I always knew that 256 was not enought to edit 720p videos..
iPad feels suddenly "old" HW wise... I think it was smart not to purchase it (or, better said, to resist purchasing waiting for the new iPhone).
But the next iteration I don't know if i'll be able to...
Just answer me this WHY WHEN I SCROLL on an Android device, be it EVO, Droid or Samsung.
Its freaking choppy.
And the funny thing is I am holding iPhone and a DROID in the VERIZON STORE side by side!!!! And showing the rep how choppy and sluggish scrolling on DROID is. AND HE DOES NOT BELIEVE ME.
What the hell. Why is it so laggy (SCROLLING) compared to iPhone? The Verizon rep just didn't agree lol
@kyphem
Of course! He could not say that even if it was true! He wants to sell Verizio!
Crippled phone on an inferior network with a data cap. Who needs it?
@CallDon Crippled phone? HA! AT&T has it's share of areas where it's not great (as does Verizon and Spring...I know b/c I used to be with Verizon), but AT&T is great in the South! As for capping data, I guess your dumbass didn't read the article where Verizon is going to tiered data plans just like AT&T! The only reason Sprint will hold onto it's cheap data plans is b/c they've lost millions of customers over the last few years to AT&T and Verizon and are having to do everything and anything they can to draw in new customers. Bottom line, all carriers suck. It still amazes me that internet on a phone is just as expensive as home internet! Oh well, the price of being mobile!
@StickyD
Crippled, as in, not allowed certain things available on other phones/networks. For instance, streaming audio is crippled! Some streaming apps only work on wifi, not on 3g. Yes the iphone is crippled!
