Samsung Galaxy Tab P1000 tablet sports WiFi and 3G data, about as thick as an iPhone?
Samsung's 7-inch Tab has certainly captured everyone's attention as another possible anti-iPad tablet. So far, Samsung's only saying that its Galaxy Tab will launch in Q3 without providing much in the way of detail other than this picture tweeted (and then pulled) by a Samsung's official Twitter account in South Africa. Since then we've seen rumored specs that include Android 2.2, a 7-inch Super AMOLED display, 1.2GHz A8 processor, 4,000mAH battery, 370-gram weight, and 16GB of on-board memory with up to 32GB of microSD expansion.
Today we've received an anonymous tip with even more info. After a series of communications with this person, we're confident enough to at least pass along what was said. Mind you, we're still classifying it as rumor until we see further evidence. First off, our source claims to have spent time with the same four-button device we saw in the video yesterday. The "sturdy and well-built" tablet was "very thin," described as about the same thickness as an iPhone. Our source says that the P1000 model is correct and that it will indeed feature "full phone functionality" albeit without a dedicated earpiece on the bezel -- for audio, you'll have to rely on a Bluetooth headset or the P1000's speaker. Thank gawd... the last thing we want to see is someone screaming into a 7-inch tablet held to the side of their head. There's a front-facing camera for video calling and a 3.2 megapixel camera around back for shooting pictures and video. Granted, 3.2 megapixels seems suspiciously low for the notoriously pixel greedy Samsung. Besides Bluetooth, we're told that the Galaxy Tab will also feature WiFi and 3G data, a standard SIM slot, and can tether over USB or WiFi. Oh, and the battery can't be removed and the version our source used had a 6x4 icon layout and appeared to be running stock Android 2.2 Froyo. Interesting, eh?
P.S. GPS too.

Me want.
@fuisti Me too!
1.2GHz A8 + Froyo... oh man, this thing will fly!
@gargle Given its shape, I'd say if you threw it.. it probably would..
Come on Samsung Release it.
If my Nexus One with Froyo battery lasts more than 30h, I cant wait to see this monster 4000maH + Froyo.
Winner here if the specs are real.
Samsung add Pixel Qi double display and GSM bands please.
@fuisti
Whaaaaaaat?! No...no I'm at the pitchas! No...it's nawt really that good.
@fuisti 1.2 Ghz A8, Super AMOLED, roughly half the weight of an iPad, nice bezel, enormous battery. Samsung are finally doing things right!
@fuisti : Battery Life?
@gargle
yeah, surfing the net and not much more.
@fuisti
This is a big fat gigantic win. I was looking to buy a phone, but I'm more than ok using a headset (I actually prefer it), and having a solid tablet and headset combo is perfect.
As a tablet, this looks like a complete win. Very well spec'd!
@fuisti
If the rumours are true, I'll wait for the 10" model. Here's hoping that it has great resolution and an even bigger battery!

Let the tablet wars begin.... Personally I am waiting for a WebOS tablet.
@8bit
I'm probably going to get a WebOS tablet for my parents. But my own will be running Android. I really don't understand the "easier to use" arguments because I don't see what's so hard to use about Android; but then, I've never used an iPhone or Pre. Well, I did look at a Pre, and liked how you could change between apps by flicking sideways.

It doesn’t look any less stupid than holding a fucking giant brick EVO or Droid X up to your ear.
@magadget I had the chance to mess round with the EVO the other day and to be honest the hardware is not to much bigger than my Nexus One (which to me is one of the worlds smallest smartphones with a big enough screen) the reason why the screen is bigger is because HTC did a great job designing this phone and created it to maximize it's screen and still keep the phone smaller. I don't see why so many people think that the EVO is so big and can't fit in your pocket when it is basically just as big as most the phones out there, but with just less bezel. The iPhone could have a huge screen but they choose to put a giant bezel on the screen and make the resolution better. That isn't a horrible idea as well because they are trying to cater to their awesome developers. The point is there are giant pros and cons with each platform I don't see why people down another phone cause it's not "their cup of tea"
@magadget wow.who peed in your cheerios? Simmer down bro. Some people like myself don't talk on the phone all day.my Evo doesn't seem to big.mostly use it in car and home.I prob send more text and email then voice.
GPS or it doesn't happen
GPS, Compass, and motion/tilt/gyro sensors. Then give me a car dock (where the camera can peek out and view the road please/thx).
STOP WITH ALL THIS TECHNOLOGY, WE DON'T HAVE UNLIMITED MONEY FOR EVERY CRAP THAT COMES OUT
@Man on earth
WTF? Then don't read engadget...
Also, your statement was grammatically incorrect. You should have said either 'every piece of crap that comes out' or 'all the crap that comes out'. Just a tip =p
@Man on earth
"WE DON'T HAVE UNLIMITED MONEY".... speak for yourself, since I don´t buy Apple products my wallet is well filled
@Man on earth
easy fix, dont buy it.
Im starting to read more and more complaints about all this new tech coming out, that theres too many new devices. I like having the ability to choose from a wide variety of new tech. I am definitely interested in this device and what the final product will look like spec-wise.
@rj7855 I buy apple products and I still have my wallets filled.

SD card reader?
On the fence until I read "stock Android 2.2 Froyo." Now a solid WANT.
Dam, then i may need, yet another voice plan to get data! And double dam if it comes to ATT, they'll put a (sic)wrapper on it!
I just want a Garmin on steroids!
@VicMatson I think they'll be able to market this as a triple threat:
unlocked (no plan required, strictly wi-fi or month2month)
data only
voice + data
I don't see telecoms requiring voice on this as it'll limit their sales so much. Since it'll be available unlocked I think T-mo would fight to get it on their network to compete with AT&T. Euro carriers it'll be even more likely to not require voice.
@summerboy18
Because the iPad is not made in China, right?
@GoodToGo
Everything is made in China, but I think his point is that at least with the iPad, the profits go to an American company. Everyone forgot that Apple is an American icon in all this silly Apple bashing.
Man the battery life should be epic, though non removable battery? Really Samsung?
Android or WebOS is what u need for a homesurfing and mediaconsumption tablet - not that creepy iOS ...
@b0rndead I actually quite enjoy browsing the web and watching movies on my iPad, Android isn't for everybody but I would go for WebOS in a heartbeat
Perhaps a screen with a numpad wasn't the smartest one to choose when first leaking this?
Froyo is good news, but I have a feeling that they'll ruin it with some gawdawful custom skin.
if its stock froyo 2.2 i want!
Yet another vapor-tablet.
@cpd5c45
love the positivity bro.
@summerboy18 I don't see how this is an iPad clone when its running Android 2.2, has a 7" Super OLED, has both a front and rear facing camera, CAN work as a phone, 1.2 Ghz processor, and a SD card slot up to 32 GB. To me that looks as if they one upped the iPad not copied it. Samsung is not a KIRF company from China either, so it looks as if you are having a little buyers remorse.
Looks like a giant EVO Phone. I guess thats OK, but when the Giant iPod (iPad) came out, holy crap,e veryone was bashing it. Nice...
Sorry, but until I see this, its just another vaporware. Move along...
Actually it can/should be thinner than a iphone as it's a larger format so the innards can be spread across a larger area.
@Amusednow Actually that's amazing analysis seeing as how the iPad is thicker than both the 3GS & obviously the iPhone 4 as well; and that's from a company that is great with engineering and known for it's form factors.
does your source for thid info have a scraggely red beard?
@angermeans I love my iPad, so so much, but I agree, every time someone makes a phone with a large screen, or a tablet that looks similar (You know.. has a large touch screen.. like all tablets) someone says that they're ripping Apple off..
Its like saying BMW and Audi are constantly ripping eachother off because they both have wheels on their cars..
Omg, an android device with THE LATEST VERSION! What a concept!
@Shalabi
By the time Samsung actually releases this, Google will probably have Android 2.3 flambe ready.
Ipad KILLAH!! ..... **throws Molotov Cocktail at Steve Jobs yatcht then drives off in Low Rider Holding A Print out of The Galaxy S Tab**
@Sniggih
LOL
