Acer expects to overtake HP as world's biggest laptop vendor by year's end (updated)
Ah, the inexorable rise of a once-small Taiwanese company. Acer chairman JT Wang has told investors in a conference call this week that his company is on track to overtake HP in worldwide laptop shipments before the year is through. That assertion is backed up by Gartner's data, cited in the Wall Street Journal, which indicates that Acer shipped 9.49 million mobile computers in the first quarter of 2010, just ahead of HP's 9.47 million. Positive vibes are also being felt on the desktop front, where Acer aims to shift 10 million units this year, while a decent $15 million is being invested into "developing a smartphone platform based on Google Inc.'s Android." We'll be curious to see whether this thrifty strategy pays off against HP's ebullient $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm, but one thing's for sure: PC vendors are hungry for some of that sweet smartphone pie.
Update: Gartner has corrected Acer's worldwide shipments number down to 9.12 million, placing it a close second behind HP for Q1.

also WebOS looks to take over iOS and Android by years end
@Zylam
We all know Apple will rule the market they are in, forever.. I mean come on... the iPhone 4 launch is going to be such a disaster.. and why is that? because even Apple cant handle the insane amount of demand the new device is getting.
I forgot what I was going to say now.. Lol
Oh yea.. Acer makes cheap desktops and netbooks, thats the only reason they are earning so much (lower cost = loss at first but win if more people see the deal)
I bought an $800 Acer PC with pretty decent specs and it runs like an airplane, because the motherboard was just so poorly structured.
My moms Aspire one over heated.
@uckApple
Well spoken.
@uckApple
but i was being scarcastic? for the comment? but now you have involed me with Apple.. :0 i just said iOS.... why.. buck why..
please forgive me i am too unrequired to die in this war, i own neighter
i was just referring to the bogus news as being bogus...
its all over save yourselves.. its too late for me
@Zylam but you're in no way affiliated with any fruit company whatsoever.
@uckApple
And my Acer Aspire died in less than 3 years and was "unrepairable."
@Zylam
?
I was just expressing my opinion on how I think the iPhone 4 launch will be, due to the insane amount of demand it has.
I dont know what your all worrying about.. Not like the Apple ninjas are going to kill you without you even knowing.. Oh well. :)
@Zylam don't forget the OVI store getting more apps than the App store.
(yes, this means your sarcasm wasn't lost on everyone!)
A nearby school bought 38 Acer desktops and had us install/clone them. 30 of them died within the first three years.
@grawss
How many kids were injured?
@uckApple I bet you mom wa sitting on the laptop thats why it overheated lol
@Bafare
Its actually because I tried to upload a picture of your mother onto the interwebz, but her epic fatness was no match for the poor little netbook.
Remember, you started it. I win.
@Bafare Idiot's guide to insults.
1) It has to make sense.
2) You suck at at it. Your move, dumbass.
@uckApple idk, i think the only way apple can stay on top is if they expand to other carriers. Otherwise I think rim, android, and wm7 will always be in the mix
@supraped69
Thats just in the US though, in all other countries they arent locked to one specific carrier. And if I could take a guess, the US only sells 30% of all the phones being produced (which is still great, its just not ALL of it)
So revenue will still be made.
And the thing you may not realize is, if any other carrier were to get the insane amount of traffic that AT&T has to handle, they would go down just as hard, or even worse.
So im guessing the way Apples looking at it is, "Why start off with a carrier that doesnt have the extreme traffic experience that AT&T has, why create the issues that occured when AT&T first started selling iPhones.. When we can continue to work with AT&T, since they have the experience, they have the money to invest in more advanced wireless technology"
Thats my opinion. I live in Canada and I dont really understand why Apple chose to only lock in the US with 1 carrier..
@uckApple Thats what everyone was saying about Microsoft years ago. Then Gates left, people in the company started aging, and you have the Microsoft of today. Apple is going to have a good run, but with the much younger Google pumping out phones at so many price points and providing support and updates to a free downloadable OS, who knows what can happen? Palm used to rule the smartphone market. I guess what im trying to say is no one can last very long in the Technology market
@FlyingAero
freaken THIS. nothing will last forever at this stage of the game. Unless, some company refined what a phone is again. inb4 razor and iPhone.
@uckApple why do you win? His comment was wittier, you tried too hard... you lose imo
@Eclectico69
how is " wa sitting" on a netbook witter?
@FlyingAero Microsoft never had creativity, though. It's a company based on business, and they're trying to expend to Apple's level, while simultaneously firing all of the people that even had a chance of making that possible. That's why they are the way they are.
Apple has only been in smartphones a year longer than Android, with the AppStore launching the same year as Android. Apple isn't old by any means, in this particular industry. iOS4 and iPhone 4 will be mobile OS leaders thanx to smart strategy. Apple put iOS on all of their mobile devices with touchscreens, so, they have 3 separate platforms. I believe Apple will always be on top, because they has 3 separate, but, successful platforms. Analysts are saying iPad will reach 7-10 million by years end (and you have to wonder, will the next iPad be introduced next Jan, too?) iPod has always been most successful near the iPod event (Android, Windowsphone, Blackberry, nokia users all by iPod touch, right? That's why they can say they don't like iPhone) and iPhone will continue to bully the competition. There isn't a subsidized phone that does everything the iPhone does. Not even Android, but that commercial's is really just a joke.
@kenstick
Exactly!
Quantity != Quality
Acer is cheap crapware that dies just after warranty just like the Dells I have had to help people with. If a computer is dirt cheap there is probably a reason for it.
@Zylam my first laptop I ever bought was an Acer, that was around 6 years ago. I bought an Acer desktop 3 years and the laptop is still running like a top. My desktop died this year but mind you I ran the snot out of it, on 16 hours a day, cpu typically at 80% but still I recommend Acer no matter what. One of the best things about why I like acer and why it is popular (apart from it's low prices) is acre manufatures all of it's parts. HP and the others do not...
@kenstick Nothing is unrepairable, I fix computers for a living; it just wasn't worth fixing over the price of a new one. My 6 year old Acer Travelmate is still going strong whereas two of my previous HP laptops both died just outside their stingy one year warranties.
@uckApple Tell me. Why are Apple still using outdated processors and graphics adapters in their "super high-tech" uni-body computers? Oh yeah, because they overheat with modern technology.
Commadore 64phone
@DefPoet The Commodore-64-App-Store sends you cassettes by mail-order to load onto your phone.
@DefPoet Yep it's a USB keyboard that attaches to any portable LCD screen. There's no GUI so to make a call you have to first load the dialer
LOAD "dialer",8,1
the more I think of it the more I want one!
Boom headshot
@MoonWalkerCTE
You need to compensate bullet drops... unless the scope is zeroed in for long range...
Well since Acer products usually only work less than a year, I suppose this makes sense.
@mremansam
Agreed. Please let this not happen. I'm tired of having to reply "Well, you shouldn't have gotten an Acer." in response to frantic support calls from my friends.
I can't agree more. I have had EVERY SINGLE Acer product I owned fail irreparably/not work properly from day 1, right from a CD-Rom driver, CD-RW drive, Monitor, Laptop and more.
When they achieve this goal. They will be the worlds biggest craptop vendor.
@mremansam
Never had a problem with an acer product including my laptop, monitor and projector. They give you the same amount of power in a laptop for half the price.
I have dealt with both hp and acer support, acer charges for phone support and requires you to send them the laptop back on your dime they will not send you parts. this is all done through a web interface. hp last time i called was on a 5 stage phone support system and was actually bragging about it this means the you can the first person and they ask you if its plugged in you say yes and they transfer you to the next person and so on and so on until you finnally get to an american who is happy to send you the part you needs. also all 17 inch hp with a nvidia 9XXX will fry themselves it is a known issue that hp was class action sued over and lost but the suit only required that they fix specific models i have had 5 of them across my desk within the span of months all died less then a month outside their warrenty and none of them were part of the recall. to sum up HP is crap and acer is the fungus that grows beneath the crap that has drug gateway down to its dark abode IMO. If you are spending less than say 700 dollars on a laptop there is a distinct and quantifiable reason. but at least dell stands behind their products and can get me a part shipped for free with a prepaid return envelope while wasting less than 15 minutes of my time. consequently you can get someone on the phone at toshiba in under 5 minutes and they will send you a prepaid box but they will not send you parts. apples support is suburb they have sent me out of warranty replacement batteries because they thought that they should have lasted longer. kind of off topic but i thought my experiences might be appreciated, maybe
@Aerilus
"you finnally get to an american"
Then your screwed.
I've got both an Acer IDea 500 and a HP TX2, The Acer has been on pretty much 24/7 for 2 years and has had a new PSU (no big deal) the HP has operated with no problem except various driver issues. Neither is better than the other
well doesn't Gateway own Acer and make their laptops? so how can Acer count as a standalone laptop vendor?
@deepen03 Acer bought out Gateway, its the other way around ;)
@deepen03: Strangely enough its the OTHER way around. Acer owns Gateway and makes their stuff
@216 wow no wonder Gateway sucks...
@deepen03 Acer owns Gateway, eMachines and Packard Bell brands in North America..
Too bad acer laptops suck. Most of the laptops I needed to repair were Acer.
Something tells me that picture was Photoshoped®
@admlshake
Its based on a true story.
pic win
@admlshake
For a second, I thought it was a modern warfare 2 photoshop
And who cares who is the biggest vendor? I would never buy a laptop based on who is the biggest vendor. the two biggest in HP and Acer suck.. I bought an ASUS, the company with the #1 most reliable laptops. and then my next choices would be Sony or Toshiba.. (#2 and #3 in reliability)
@deepen03 I was under the impression that HP Pavillion desktops and their all in ones were supposed to be rather decent.
@deepen03 Agree with the thought on why to/not to buy a laptop. But to answer, the company and it's PR people care, as do it's stockholders, it's competitors and the stockholder's of their competitors.
Now, onto the meat, if they are selling more it means they are doing something right. Yes, it isn't what is important to a well informed buyer, but people who want quality have to put in quality (even if just a 5 min Google search) research to find what to buy. Then again, the companies you list in your top 3 have their own inherent problems, only one I'd actually buy from would be ASUS.
@deepen03
Arent Sony, HP & Toshiba laptops all made by the same company Clevo ?
@deepen03
Asus used to be really poor but now they produce some really, really good machines. Acer, on the other hand, are utter shit.
