How would you change Sony's Dash?
The verdict is still out on whether or not Sony's Dash is a world changer, but while we patiently await the first mod to shove a battery into this thing and make it a bona fide tablet, we're going to flick through your suggestions on tweaking what we've got. Were your hopes dashed (ahem) when Sony revealed that this thing was meant to be used inside? Are you happy with the widget software loaded on? Is this thing superior to your existing Chumby device? Feel free to really let loose here -- we get the feeling that Insignia's Infocast is just waiting around the corner to take your advice before Sony can pop out a revised edition.

Add a battery.
@Devin
And not put it in Justin Bieber music videos.
Paste a Apple sticker on it and sell it to Gizmodo claiming it's an Apple prototype for 5X more than I bought it for.
@Devin Hover technology. Wait, too far?
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA Haha! Good one.
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA woah, you bought one? respect.
@Devin Stop forcing this as a tablet, because it's not. I would love to see Sony making tablets, but this surely isn't one. I'd say make it thinner and more affordable.
@Devin
I would dash it.
@Devin And put a mac Mini inside.
@dmshocker
put and apple logo on it so it'll sell for sure
@Devin
Set fire to it, then stamp all over it.
@Devin
Wait...NY taxi cabs have had this same technology in their backseats for years.
@Devin
Put wheels on it, hollow it out a bit, create a remote control and call it a go cart for my cat.
@Mouniface Funny, but if they actually did that it wouldn't sell because of what it is, the software and hardware...but thumbs up on the humor!
Make it portable
@lexitu
Make it a touchscreen PSP and keep all the Dash features in an application. Oh yea, and add a kickstand to that.
@lexitu Put a keyboard and touchpad on it, and give it a battery and ability to fold the display down for easy transport. Call it a netportable.
@lexitu Only 2 comments out of 60+ asking for it to be cheaper, that's a bit of a surprise. It's not a bad alarm clock, it's just priced wrong.
If it's not portable, it shouldn't be named "Dash."
It should be . . . "Squat."
@Smart People Play Tuba I don't even want it like my iPad portable, just so I can move it around the damn house.
@Smart People Play Tuba
It's NOT named Dash like people keep saying "you can dash with it". It's named dash like DASHBOARD. You know, the widget engine?
My personal take on Sony Dash: I was hoping it would be an alternative to the Logitech Squeezebox Radio which has been nothing but a disaster since the last software update (7.5.1?), coupled with Logitech refusing to comment on fixes, it was a horrible experience. Logitech just pushed an update last week, and the morning after I ran it, I got the bugs that I had figured out runarounds to, BACK!
Long story short, SQ Radio, great device, crappy firmware updates.
Sony Dash, so so device, SLOWWWWW UI.
Next, some China company?
Make it more flexible to use as toilet paper.
@september11th
Or how about a bin in front of it and rename it 'Trash'.
Put android on it
@AdamSpruijt
god these comments (android, symbian, webOS, iOS, etc) gets so lame and old
@wako and complaints like yours don't?
honestly android makes since to be said a lot because of the fragmentation issues causing everyone to need more android
palm under hp hasn't done anything yet so not webos
everyone hates iOS because of (trolled on about reason) so wrong again
I have never seen anything like that except the obvious put the next version kind of thing for symbian
Android's the only one people say that about that often
honestly you're on a tech site so people are going to ask for an open source OS or at least the ability to freely make their own apps
actually the only reason the comment was made was that it was a crippled OS and someone said "hey android would be better"
QED sir, QED
@University of Pi
Everyone hates iOS?
Man, you'd better rush out and tell the 90 million owners of ios devices, 98% of whom are satisfied with them, that they hate iOS! You can't let them go on thinking they have their own honest opinions man!!!
@jellotime91 i'm an ipad user, and i hate iOS. thanks for playing.
i just don't think that for the next year, any tablet is going to get even close to apple's dominance in the apps available for the ipad. my next tablet definitely won't be apple, but right now there's no denying that they've done an awesome job of it.
@wako people say it because its true. If you're going to go to the effort of making some embedded device that uses widgets and probably runs on Linux, why *aren't* you using Android? The thing is designed for that purpose and works exceptionally well.
Shoving out something which appears to be a Flash Lite player app is a wasted opportunity.
Not launched it at all
Give it a camera and video chat abilities to any phone you can tie it to as long as they have a camera as well.
MAke it more cuddley by adding bezel, add laggeyer touch screen for suspense effect
and let me connect a mouse so I can select things without having a clue what I am doin. Also more Justin beiner videos plox
I can't imagine using this for anything other than a alarm clock. but my phone already does that.
I'd stop making it, and focus on perhaps making a tablet device to compete with the iPad that ran for 30+ hours and did everything better, but, Sony always screws things up. They can't seem to get anything right anymore - the last they did totally right was the original Walkman cassette player; not even CDs were done completely right from the gitgo.
The Mini-Disc could have replaced floppies but Sony pooched that too. One thing I still miss about my last MD portable: considering its opto-mechanical nature, it was quite amazing to get nearly 100 hours of battery life off the internal gumstick battery + a single AA battery. Seriously, it provided me nearly 100 freakin' hours of playback time before I'd have to recharge that gumstick or replace that AA...
If they can build a device with optical and mechanical circuitry and components that lasts that damned long, why can't they get to work on a real tablet with real battery life... I wonder.
@bbzGhost Who sits on their device away from an AC outlet for 30 hours?
In fact, who does that for more than five hours at a stretch?
@Ducman69 I see you've never travelled...
@sortius Not to the Africa jungle or wherever it is you go that doesn't have electricity yet, no. xD
@Ducman69
The african jungle you speak of is every single airline; try going on an international flight and see if you can find an ac outlet; only certain planes give you access to power outlets. You can easily run 14+ hours on an international flight.
@loadoftoad Every flight I've been on to Singapore and Germany has had power outlets. You just need an adapter if its an older plane. Gotta stop flying w/ the livestock. Its true the short domestic flights don't, but they are short and the airports have outlets.
U askin that bcuz sum1 bought that thing?
Add a 30" plus screen and a remote control and hang it on the wall.
@savagemike HD and a brand new OS that loads OSes inside it
(sort of a virtual box OS I guess)
Maybe make some sort of universal wall mount system so I can hang it next to sink while brushing teeth and another mount by kitchen sink(guess I spend a lot of time by running water!) like the old time cordless phone chargers. It's really hard to find a use for something aimed at gadget lovers that does a subpar overlap of my other gadgets.
gee. never really thought about it. recall it and say there's a faulty... alarm clock in it. seriously sony, you make things like vaio and ps3 on one side, and this crap on the other?!
make it a cuddly lil' pillow with batteries like the first chumby and it's set! :D
make it disappear.
Super AM-OLED and HDMI so it can be used as a secondary monitor. On second thought, skip the Dash and just give me a Super AM-OLED monitor.
i didnt know anyone purchased this thing
make it as cheap as an alarm clock. (haha, its sony)
let me sync it to my phone so i can see who is calling me from the dash/see texts from the dash.
make it alert me when someone is at the door
let me answer home phone calls
add a camera to the front and let me make video calls to skype or phones.
@Motoken
i like your idea.
