Intel drops Atom D525 CPU, adds its wireless display tech to a host of new devices
Intel's launched a trio of new products for your gadget-loving enjoyment. Up first, the 1.8GHz dual core Atom D525 and the single core D425 which we first spotted at Computex 2010 are now available for low powered desktops, and both are paired with the Intel NM10 Express Chipset. Up next, Intel's made its wireless display technology available on about 25 systems and at 10 retailers. Finally, Clearwire's announced the nationwide availability of 4G-enabled laptops and netbooks based on Intel CPUs at Best Buy. Some of the systems grabbing up the 4G set-up include the Dell Inspiron 14, Dell Inspiron 15, Dell Mini 10, and Toshiba Satellite M645.

@DefPoet *Sony Vaio Z, there, fixed.
I've got one I don't use, want to buy it?

@DefPoet It truly was, especially when they had the 15% off outlet sale. I bought five at the time for each member of the family!

When decommissioning this, I am going to turn it into a low-power server. It only consumes 5W idle w/ screen off on 100mbps LAN, so is great for just setting next to your router as a little torrent box/server. Only downside is the N270 is too weak for re-encoding HD video to stream on Orb.
They still sell the Dell Mini 9 as the Vostro A90 (just a black version) at the Outlet. And there's currently 15% off Outlet coupons floating around now.
Sweet my carpc can now have an ever faster CPU.
@liquidkernel Got pics? I have put off upgrading my Corvette for ages, and really want a carputer.
I have just short of a double-din space wise.
I saw there are some wireless OBD2 sensors you can get too, that way you could output it straight to the carputer as well. How badass would that be! :D
Wonder if i can make this a low power HTPC?, maybe I can stick it on an old HP Slimline case.
@rstoplabe14 Only if you can get it with some beefier graphics hardware (PCI card maybe?)
Mhmmm...beef
@rstoplabe14 It should be able to do 720p, seeing as the original Atom can decode it without hardware acceleration.
@liquidkernel
The N270 couldn't, not well at least.
@tobsmonster2
Thats bogus, the N270 on my Dell Mini 9 could do 720P all day and night. And I have huge collection of movies.
What OS and media player were you using?
@tobsmonster2 Ah I see. The Atom 330 could do it.
@Ducman69
Not sure yet on what I want to do. Its just that I have a HP Slimline that needs a new board, so its either going to be an HTPC or just a desktop for my little sisters. Im thinking the latter, since the XBOX 360 does a great job already, and the only thing missing, Hulu, is on the works anyways
@Ducman69
N270 + GMA950 only used flash based players (before hardware acceleration).
@tobsmonster2 would there still be some consensus that this might be the best CPU to build an HTPC around?
@tobsmonster2
Ohhhh, ok I misunderstood I'm sorry.
The N270 will run 720P videos of various formats in VLC no problem, but on flash it would choke like Tera Patrick on a... well, it would choke.
@juanvaldez
To be honest I'd just forgo the atom (unless you can get it paired w/ ion) and use a corei3. Its a powerful dual core and the GMA HD chip it comes with will handle 1080 just fine (and some games too). Also you could underclock it and run it with a fanless heatsink if silence is your thing.
Hopefully they can be paired with decent graphic chips that would allow for HD playback (flash, etc) ...
@astrodemoniac Ideal IMO is optimus ION2 combo with one of these.
That way you can use the integrated Intel graphics on the CPU for fantastic efficiency, but kick over to the Nvidia for light gaming and HD flash/1080P movies automatically!
I thought ALL ION2s did this, but I'm really confused by the last Asus that was posted up here that apparently does not. =/
Don't care about this -- they need to get the LightPeak tech to the forefront and in consumer devices :) Although WiDi 2.0 is cool now that there's no lag and it can handle 1080p
My next laptop i want that wireless display tech. its really nice and makes watching movies over the tv so much easier from the laptop. DO WANT
"drops" == "releases" ?
@FitFan: "drops" == "releases" ?
Yes, welcome to Engadget, where "drops" means *exactly the opposite* of what it means in the rest of the world.
@Engadget: Why do you do this? Why can't you use ordinary English instead of this pseudo-street-jive?
@Michael Geary : it's not even correct usage of street jive.
I'm a bit concerned about how much power this thing will use. It seems like this'll be more of a low powered laptop than a netbook.
Comparison between the more traditional Atom N280 and the newer D525:

1.6GHz Single Core
DDR2 running at 667 MHz
2.5 Watt maximum TDP
D525:
1.8GHz Dual Core
DDR3 running at 800 MHz.
