Motorola Droid 2 stars in its first video, touts 1GHz CPU and 512MB of RAM?
It was inevitable, really, that a phone as widely leaked as the Droid 2 would end up caught on video. Doing the honors for us today are Android and Me, who've compared the new Droid to the classic variant. Funnily enough, they didn't find too much deviation from Motorola, describing the two handsets as "virtually identical," with the major physical change being the replacement of the previous keyboard's navigation pad with arrow buttons. The front end's soft buttons have also changed to Moto's Blur options, but otherwise you're still looking at a 3.7-incher with a 5 megapixel imager. The big improvement seems to have been under the hood with a new 1GHz TI OMAP3630 processor and 512MB of RAM (PowerVR SGX530 graphics unit remains the same) driving the Droid 2 to some robust benchmark scores. Of course, we don't see the handset booted up in this hands-on video, so treat these specs and results as provisional until we hear from the official horse's mouth in a couple of days.

I loved my Droid. This Droid 2 should be great too.
@WastedxYears I hate my droid, it's so slow.
@jjrudey
You think your Droid is slow? I'm running a custom rom (ChevyNo1's) @ UltraLowVoltage 1.25GHz with Froyo 2.2 and Adobe Flash. Runs great for me...maybe you should try a different ROM
@WastedxYears I love my Milestone, but I'm starting to really hate at&t now. Its like they want to lose customers now with their greedy new plans and stupid data cap which could spread to other carriers. I use to always defend them, but now I see no reason. I wish the best for Verizon in taking down the iPhone era and making at&t realize how ignorant and narrow minded they are.

Benchmark from my Droid
@FutureX 2001 Honestly, I kept my Droid stock and I've been nothing but happy with it; nothing slow about it.
I'm definitely excited for the Droid2 though. If it weren't for Blur I'd be all over the DroidX/Shadow...oh well. Hopefully I'll be able to upgrade for a decent price when this launches
@WastedxYears
Droid has POOR battery life. And Droid 2 may be worst. Any info on battery life?
@WastedxYears
i can think of one reason i'd wanna upgrade from the droid to the D2. the keyboard. that alone is enough for me. i'm a sucker for qwerty keyboards, and simply can't deal w/ slab phones, and i've used many qwerty keypad phones, but as far as premium phones over the years, the droid is one of the worst keyboards i've ever used. nice to see moto got rid of that Dpad.
@Zodiac
Droid 2 has a 45nm processor compared to the 65nm processor in the Droid so the Droid 2 should have better battery life. D2 may have a 1 GHz processor but it's not going to run at 1 GHz all the time.
@WastedxYears
The phone does look awesome. Motorola should market this with a Deftones jam playing in the commercial
@Zodiac
Come now, it's no worse than any of the other smartphones, including the iPhone.
@WastedxYears
This will make overrated Snapdragon looks like SH*T.
The processor is clocked to 1ghz and can beat any other 1ghz phone, except to Galaxy S, but maybe will make it look really not the best
@WastedxYears wonder If he thinks the video low quality.
i was expecting a second camera in the front. anyone else?
@Android looks Hacked Together
Still is. And much better than you iPhone, fanboy
@FutureX 2001 The way you started out your post I thought you were going to agree with him. You started out ... "You think your Droid is slow," and then started naming all these things that aren't slow like 2.2, 1.3 ghz lol kinda threw me off for a min, but then again it's 5:30 in the morning the damn air conditioner would kick on and I would think it's a spider tap dancing or something.
@WastedxYears I applaud Moto for not going with the same Snapdragon 1 Ghz processor that we are seeing on every phone since the Nexus One last January. I always liked the design of the OG Moto Droid and the Droid 2 looks great, but the X is looking pretty damn appealing. My only concern is Blur, but really Engadget's vid last week put me at ease...Bring it on Moto it's beginning to look like your turn to take the Android crown back from the HTC all stars
@angermeans
TI owns Quallcomm...without a doubt, I'm just saddened that they didn't add the other improvements that the droid X has to the Droid 2 (720p video, HDMI, etc.)...kind of stupid if you ask me.
@FutureX 2001 Stock droid is painfully slow, custom roms are for gadget nerds not average users...but that custom rom probably is good
@WastedxYears i tried the Droid, way too slow, and didn't like the keyboard. I'm probably gonna get an iPhone 4 once I check them out somewhere.
@JAG
Now they're saying this and the Droid X will have the snapdragon instead of the TI OMAP ?!?!
@NuclearKemist
Marketing guy messed up. It's still OMAP.
@vlad786
I think there is, in the picture below, I circled the dot that looks like a camera and in the second image, I adjusted the brightness and contrast to show something thats definitely there. Giggity.

This is awesome
Interesting. Couldn't say the same about the white balance, though. I don't know about you guys, but looking at the picture isn't easy on the eyes.
This thing is sexy as hell
@yoavraccah
Indeed. This is going to be my next device assuming some massive flaws don't surface.
zzzzzzz huh! Oh, just the Droid2.... zzzzzzzzzz
@High
this minor revision reminds me of RAZR and SLVR days. cellphone era before the iPhone. makes me sick.
@Jollybee
So you're telling me, iPhone 2G to 3G is a major revision? Please think before you say, dumbass.
@Paul Elmy
yup my 2G can do 3G just fine. oh no wait....
someone is not using their brain celss
@Jollybee
LOL
@Jollybee How is this any worse than the 3G to 3GS revision??
@superhans
its motorola and andriod
@Jollybee
Stupid moto droid hater, go away wit your iShit
@JAG
Ahhh somebody mad! Ha ha! No worries I'll have the iphone 4 with iworks for iphone very soon. You can keep your tired ass HTC rebranded Droid or whatever gimmick the cell makers have gotten you into.
@Jollybee
i Tard
@pspitts
LOL... and Apple has the biggest gimmick ever! The first generation Iphone was revolutionary at the time it launched, and has has little progession thus far compared to other phone manufacturers. And somehow Apple has continued to persuade people otherwise. How is it acceptable to people for a manufacturer to barely have a remedy for dropped calls on the fourth generation of it's phone. How is it acceptable to people for a manufacturer to barely add multitasking to it's handset. These are basic things that most smartphones have been doing and Apple has just gotten around to adding these things to it's new "revolutionary" handset. Sure the Iphone has a lot of bells and whistles but it just skates by with basic tasks. That seems like a bigger gimmick to me.
@pspitts
Talking about gimmick the cell makers have gotten you into...Once again the irony...Enjoy the "magic" :D
@High
As a Blackberry User, I find it very funny when iPhone users claim they can do so much with their phones and yet all they do is waste all their time going onto other Brand's threads and talk trash desperately trying to get attention.
Someone just needs to make an App for iPhone/Apple users called "Listen to ME, Look at MY iPhone," and all the app does is showing a face responding in awe of everything Apple owners repeatively talk about; "I have the best web browser in ALL smartphone b/c it doesnt use Flash."
@pspitts
Don't worry, your iPhone 4 preorder will get canceled. Then you can drink the cool aid and end it all in the name of Stevo.
@pspitts
In fact I prefer MOTO instead of HTC, they build better quality
@JAG Glad I'm not the only one that thinks that. I'm sticking with Moto phones. They do their smartphones justice. Well the high end one anyway. Some of their mid range phones are good too.
@Jamesology Lol. You just gave someone an idea. And He will be rich lol
@superhans
This is pretty close to the 3G to 3GS revision, which I thought was pretty big despite a lot of people thinking it wasn't a significant upgrade. They must have never done comparisons.
Adding a faster processor and doubling the RAM on an already great design like the 3GS or Droid 2 is a nice upgrade.
@JAG AMEN MY FRIEND AMEN!!!
@JAG
I completely agree. Moto build quality and battery life are unparalleled. My droid is built like a tank, and it doesn't have any of the plastic feel of HTC or Palm or iPhony. It's just super solidly built, and I say this after 8 months of relentless abuse of my droid.
Add to that best-in-the-business sound quality and you have everything I could ever want in a phone. Other phones may be flashier or have more features or whatever. But what phones last longer, wear better, and make the most consistent calls? Motos on Verizon. Period.
Why so blue?
That's what she said.
@Dahis
hmm..
