Bing Entertainment integrates Zune Marketplace purchases, improves Microsoft's media swagger
Bing, Microsoft's "decision engine," is wading into the entertainment realm today with the revelation that searches for music, lyrics, games, TV shows, and movies will get a new special sauce treatment from here on out. You'll now be able to play 100 basic games right in your search results, along with full-length streaming of songs (first time only, 30 seconds thereafter) from a 5 million-strong catalog. The latter is augmented with "one-click" purchases from the Zune Marketplace (directly through the web, no need to launch the app), Amazon, or iTunes music libraries. Movie tickets are promised to be similarly easy to buy, though the biggest new feature might well be the Bing.com/entertainment page, which acts as a portal into your media consumption with a selection of the most popular content in each category. It doesn't look terribly different from the iTunes storefront, but given its partnership with Apple's digital music shop, we doubt Bing's Entertainment section is perceived as much of a threat -- not yet, anyway. As to that other search giant, Google's been said to already be putting together a music store of its own. Man, all this integration and interconnectedness -- just where will it end?
This evening, at an entertainment-focused event in Los Angeles, Bing launched Bing Entertainment, a new vertical on Bing.com. Bing Entertainment specializes in music, movies, TV and games – making it easy for people to access everything entertainment, including television shows, song lyrics, movie trailers, gaming cheats and much more. A survey from Bing.com reveals that 76% of people want one comprehensive resource to help them cut thru the clutter and get to movies, music, TV and games information faster. Bing Entertainment visually organizes all the entertainment information you care about and brings it together in one place, helping you make better entertainment decisions. Key features include:
* Bing Music: Bing lets you discover and sample more than 5 million songs and lyrics for free. Bing offers the most complete search results including songs, artists, albums, and hard-to-find lyrics. People can play songs in-line and purchase with one-click from iTunes, Amazon or Zune. Zune Pass subscribers can already stream unlimited full tracks from Zune.net, but now all subscribers can purchase any of the millions of pure MP3s from the Zune catalogue directly over the web from Zune.net – anytime, anywhere.
* Bing Games: Bing now helps the 175 million gamers in the US beat the game. Bing is the only search engine that offers more than 35,000 aggregated reviews, cheats, and walkthroughs for games. And, Bing makes it easy to play nearly 100 top casual games in-line, like Bejewled, Hexix, and Bubble Town, without worrying about registering, getting spyware, or being overloaded with ads.
* Bing TV: People can now access one of the largest catalogs of videos on the Web, from partners like Hulu, Viacom, CBS and more – all in one place. Bing offers more than 1,500 shows and 20,000 full TV episodes, TV listings, and easy access to episodes, reviews, images, and more. People can find their favorite show in HD, check out user reviews and invite friends to watch using Facebook, Twitter, or other social tools.
* Bing Movies: Bing helps people decide which movie to see with visual search, customer reviews, in-line movie trailers and highlight videos, one-click purchasing and more. Easily plan an evening out with integrated Bing Maps, which can help people find parking, local restaurants and other information.
Bing Entertainment is available at Bing.com/entertainment. Screenshots and a Fact Sheet regarding Bing Entertainment are available at Microsoft News Center. Oh Bing!, you tease
@AlienSix
This update is a LOT more than just bing music purchases. you can see music lyrics (without going to google and getting spyware from those websites it gives you)
you can play games without leaving bing (http://www.bing.com/games/online/gb/bing/bjewld/default/en-us) this means, again, not having cookies and other sketchy stuff from some websites.
now, this may not seem like a big deal at first glance, but the simplicity of this upgrade has a big meaning for all microsoft devices, especially windows phone 7. Considering every windows phone has a bing button on them, this is an incredible leap for simplicity in phones. want to play a game? press bing button, search game, play.
No need to download an app, and all at your fingertips. Im excited to see what other applications bing can integrate into itself.
@AlienSix Proof that microsoft is getting serious about the cloud. Can't wait to see what's next!
@AlienSix
I am impressed. Check out some of these cool queries
Visual Search (Top iPhone Apps)

Music Search ( Try clicking the lyrics link)

Online TV Shows

Also try searching for "Halo 3: ODST Xbox 360" and go to Cheats Tab for collection of cheat codes
@anunay
this is why I use bing more than google. the days of "zomg simplicity" and a "list of 10 blue links" are over.
applications will be inside bing, and im excited for what is possible.

@AlienSix Wow Microsoft!!! Is Google falling behind in the search engine business???
@liftedngifted1
its funny because bing isnt even their main business, but they are innovating at a pace ive never seen before. I mainly use bing, and ive been using the new bing entertainment and theres so many features i cant grasp it all yet. TV genres, music genres, etc.
@AlienSix
What is Bing?
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly - when does this come out? the article doesnt say and i just checked bing and its not there
@liftedngifted1
yes
@flett it's been slowly rolling in. I saw this on Giz, and tried it on Bing yesterday, and it wasn't there yet. now it is for me.
@anunay Screw bing -- they won't let me view certain results pages because I'm on Linux, claiming my computer isn't supported. "Your computer isn't supported. Visual Search doesn't work on your computer.
You can use Visual Search on computers running Windows XP and later or Intel-based Mac OS X 10.4.8 and later."
So much on offer...and yet somehow I still have no desire to try Bing. Maybe chuck a few more TV ad campagins in my direction, MS?
@jgpuff
Gee maybe that's because most people do Searching in Browser Search bars and not ACTUAL WEBSITES now?
Whatever Bing's doing, great, good job, it will be a totally cluttered mess. Gee.. so, iTunes Store vs.. Online Stores...
We haven't seen this befo.. oh... yeah, that was pretty ghastly...
Where art thou BuyMusic.com
@jgpuff yeah same here. I just have trouble trusting it. The few times I've tried to give it a chance, it gave me crap results compared to Google.
@Wesscoast
Even people who use search bars end up in the same result page, and don't even try and tell me that Bing is any more cluttered then Google these days.
@Wesscoast
how is bing "cluttered" when google just completed their copied interface with a bunch of redundant search options on the left. gee i can search "images" on the left and on the top! that isnt redundant and useless clutter at all!
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
The two buttons do different things. One returns images search results for your current query (left), the other takes you to images.google.com (top).
Google:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&source=hp&q=engadget&aq=f&aqi=g10&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=
Bing:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=engadget&form=QBLH&filt=all&qs=n&sk=
How is Bing's sidebar the more useful? Google's lets me view more refined results depending on e.g. images or trending twitter topics, while Bing suggests a search for... Gizmodo, a link that's vaguely related but isn't actually what I'm interested in searching for.
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
In case you overlooked, Google's sidebar lets me do this:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Engadget&hl=en&prmd=u&source=lnms&tbs=mbl:1&ei=FOIhTLrPIZ-80gTK24TqDw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&ved=0CA0Q_AU
While Bing's lets me do this:
http://www.bing.com/search?q=Gizmodo&FORM=R5FD
@The Madman
"
The two buttons do different things. One returns images search results for your current query (left), the other takes you to images.google.com (top)."
wrong, they do the exact same thing, image results for the query. Have you ever actually tried it or did you just make up random crap?
here's a link since you need your hand held through this:
http://www.google.com/images?q=google
now click the top link
how is that not the same thing? they even highlighted the left bar in the same manner.
@The Madman
"How is Bing's sidebar the more useful"
bing's sidebar was just updated yesterday, and was converted to "tabs" under the search box. there is no "sidebar" anymore so im not sure what you mean, Youre comparing bing's "related searchs" to google's redundant filters. apples to oranges
Wow. A thoroughly integrated interface with some cool features. Apparently everyone in Redmond is not asleep (ahem, Courier?)
Bravo, Microsoft. This looks totally usable and it's _web_ based!
I hope the folks in Mountain View are paying attention. And hopefully the folks in Cupertino will come along and "invent" this again soon!
@dalex7777
except apple isnt in search, but they are into making you download games for $0.99 each since you dont have flash.
ooooo now theres even more bing to love while jammin out too
Bing is really beginning to tug at me....Bing News needs a lot of work though, and that's still important to me...but I have to say I am pretty impressed with everything else that they are doing.
Wasn't a fan of Bing until recently. It won't replace Google as a general search tool but it really does a great job at helping users delve into info a lot better than Google does. Not to mention their photo search is far and away better than Google image search.
Don't worry Google, I still love you. But Bing is like my delicious hook-up every Fri night! Don't worry!
There were big predictions of HULU coming to Xbox 360 @ E3. From the description given in the press release, Bing TV would be an even better addition since it includes Hulu, Viacom, CBS, etc.
Bing Movies would be a nice add to the XBox 360 dashboard as well.
@KBatFLORIDA
This actually bolds really, REALLY well for Xbox 360 this fall. MS is now adding Bing to the 360 dash so many of these features like visual search, Bing TV, Bing Music, Bing Movies could make its way over.
http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets/images/9/2010/06/500x_vidkin2.jpg
This is actually pretty sweet..
I can just search a song and play it then and there. No going through links and such.
@eddieexe
Once again, MS just needs to invent a time machine, and go back to the days when releasing a kickass music store was actually a big deal... say, 2004?
@Wesscoast well, maybe for you. But not for me. I'm already a Zune Pass subscriber. I think they've done a decent job at creating one so late. It's very nicely integrated with their devices.
Bing is okay. I don't use it much. The few times I have, I've gotten crap results compared to Google. But with this....I don't know...it's just calling me to the dark side.
Then again I don't JUST use a search engine for music..
@Wesscoast
this is more than a "music store" you can search all "tv" websites like hulu, and its all presented in a nice interface.
you can play games without going to a sketchy website. you can listen to songs without going to websites. you can get lyrics, movie reviews, and more.
you obviously hate anything microsoft does so this wont mean anything to you.
@eddieexe Wow, just like Baidu did 3-4 years ago in China. Only they had to shut it off outside China due to copyright arguments.
nice Bing logo!
This is why I love Bing.
Anyone else having issues getting to the end of iphone review? The end is missing and I dont have access to comments. On my pc it stops right after the video sample.
@tonio
heres the end of the review summed up: "ITS THE BEST PHONE EVAR. STEVE JOBS I WANNA MARRY YOU. I LOVE APPLE"
@kid300 Just admit androids ugly
I don't recall reading that at the end. More something to do with it being the new edge for the moment and probably eclipsed in 3 months time, until next year.
So what if they like it? It does look impressive a phone. Only thing bothering me about it is to have the exact same phone as everyone else.
I'm not in a hurry, where I live it won't be available before september. Leaves some time for the hype to settle down and see what the phone truly is worth.
microsoft lives
Bing can kiss my A@H till they start supporting us Euros. Zune and Bing are just for the US.
@ZuurKen Zune and Bing will be coming this fall, hold tight.
@ZuurKen Seriously, how hard it is to go to "Preferences" and set country as "United States - English" only once. I'm in India and I have been using the Bing's US home page since i changed in preferences. May be you will miss out on local news and other localized content but others just simply work
When will it end?
Pretty soon I suspect. Music, books, news, movies, tv, games, info. It's sorta close to done now.
You kinda wonder what then. Some kind of crawling duke out as 3-5 big everythings trade interpretations of static randomly dodgy charts on who's winning this month.
Ahhh, analysts that's what's next. Teams of them flooding the web with strange surveys and opposing percentages.
@Cy Starkman They need to draw people in to use the search engine so that it gets better search results. Its best that they go all in now to build the user base and get some clicks. Then later, even though no new features are introduced, they will have search results that people will trust as much as Google, if that time ever comes.
plus, there is alot more they can do. Their decision based seaech results still has alot more room to grow.
Microsoft is doing great with their look. I like the UI in most of their products...
Except to Windows Phone 7. I would buy if the UI didnt look so unattractive and bland. I get the Zune theme...its ok. But that start screen is hideous to say the least.
Ive switched over to Bing as my only search engine and haven't looked back... its been a dream thus far and its still getting better. Go BING!
@timotim
include me in the migration from google to bing. Its a breath of fresh air each day i pull up firefox. I look forward to future improvements.
@timotim
Switched along time ago to Bing and haven't looked back. With all the SEO spamming going on the results at google are just junk.
With all this Zune branding MS has to make the Zune for Mac eventually, right?
