Mercedes-Benz SLS E-Cell prototype fuels our electric dreams with 526 horses
Oh, electric supercar, why do you tease us so? Mercedes is latest to throw up a prototype of what it expects future rubber burners to look like, and its SLS E-Cell doesn't disappoint. Based on its petrol-guzzling SLS AMG model, this beast produces 526 horsepower and 649 pound-feet of torque, thanks to four motors (one for each wheel) allied to a battery array that can provide an industry-leading 480kW of juice. How fast does that get you to the magical 60mph marker? Try four seconds. There's a handsome 10-inch infotainment panel in the center console, which you may see after the break, but the best news is that this prototype can be driven now and could well turn into a production Benz at some point in 2013.

what a perfect beast of german engineering...
Jet engine invented by Frank Whittle... British.
@cswinter Wrong.
Dr. Hans von Ohain invented the technology at the same time, but was the first to create a jet engine that actually worked, and with Heinkel were the first to develop that further into practical aircraft propulsion to be used in the war effort.
The Germans were so far ahead in jet technology, that were Hitler not such an overconfident blowhard (amongst other things), chances are good we'd be speaking ze German right now, ja.
This looks like at 2000 honda prelude!
Anyone want to guess what the gas is that holds the largest percentage of the combined gasses that make up the "greenhouse effect" garbage? Water vapor.... Screw this eco-friendly crap! I'll take my E55 AMG and my wife's CL65 any day over this electric car crap! At least I have real exhaust and engine sounds! And I don't have to worry about disposing of those batteries when the car finally dies...
@cromwelld
They don't talk about that do they. Nor do they talk about the centralized emissions from the power station. Nor the insane materials needed currently and their enviro cost. Or the drop in storage as the cells wear out.
Looks great on carefully crafted marketing and after that it comes down to the same thing. Wanna be enviro then walk, otherwise you just posing.
@Cy Starkman I would have to say that I disagree with just about everything you have said.
Centralized emissions from power plants are nothing compared to the amount of pollution coming from all of our ICE engines currently, and that would include the ramp-up needed for EV infrastructure.
Batteries need to be swapped and monitored for lowered capacity at a swap station (like the one being tested in Japan). Batteries that have lost their capacity need to be recycled (they can be).
And as far as "real exhaust" and "engine sounds" who really cares? And if you do, then you fall into the real marketing conspiracy of the oil companies that we can't get off oil.
BTW, I am not a enviro-nut, I would just like to see the US and other counties become energy self-sufficient, and stop having import energy while funding unstable, outdated, or just plain terrorist supportive governments.
@Blkrain Because I like the way my E55's exhaust and engine sound (as well as the engine's of Ferrari and Lamborghini among other's), I fall into the "real marketing conspiracy of the oil companies"?? I don't think so! Trust me, I would be quite happy if the made an ICE that was able to get 100mpg+ if it sounded like and performed like my car's current setup! As for electric vehicles and their batteries, do some searches for articles on how they produce those batteries and the effects that acquiring these materials has on the land. And what is your suggestion to replace tires with? After all, rubber is produced from oil...
and i jizz in my pants
Fap fap fap!
"handsome 10-inch infotainment panel" is quite ugly. Keep ye electronics out of the car console!
Unless this thing runs on water I think you'll find 526 house power in any car is not environmentally friendly.
At least Mercedes didn't just drop an electric engine in a Lotus though.
Better start saving my nickels...and pennies and dimes and selling all my possessions.
Make it real!
Sure, I couldnt afford it today, and perhaps not by 2013... But this is a car I would really like to see out in the world. That Audi concept as well.
