Nokia N900 drops to $369, unlocked
Hard to believe but after all this time the N900 remains the most powerful handset in Nokia's vast collection of cellphones. No other Nokia handset even comes close and that won't change until Nokia launches the Symbian^3-powered N8 or the MeeGo-powered N9. So if you've got the dough and a certain inclination to write Python scripts on a Friday night, you might want to think about sliding $369 (down from $649 at launch or $479 currently at Nokia USA) Espoo's way for a crack at the ARM Cortex A8 slider. Sure, it's not the freshest face on the block, but the development community will certainly help eek-out every last bit of value for many months to come.
P.S. Don't forget to apply the coupon code LL17PBSTFKZ440 to get the reduced price.

@uckApple
Cheap hackers dream, but this also means N9 is rising in the horizon.
Nokia always lowers the old phones price just before new one arriwes.-
@uckApple damn, bough mine a month ago for 550
@uckApple
hmm,....MeeGo for phones to be released in alpha on June 30th followed by an announcement that N900 drops to $350.- the next day. I guess someone is trying to create a buzz about MeeGo, allowing people to try it hands-on on existing hardware and making some money while they are at it ;-)
Its interesting that so many people (and blogs) rah-rah about the latest iOS and Android yet never realize how much of a power-play Nokia and Intel are engaging in with MeeGo. If they execute this right (till now it seems so but I will wait and see), Android literally wont know what hit it - Googlers, are you listening?!
I don't understand the attraction to this phone over an iPhone or even one of the nicer (Incredible / Evo) Andriod phones?
What am I missing?
@CodyTech
N900 is a tweaker's dream. Get a Android/Meego/Ubuntu triple boot going on any other phone.
@BigJayDogg3 I feel you as far as the tweaker's wet dream but still...it can be done on other devices.
@CodyTech I don't know cody....brains perhaps!!
@CodyTech
Have you "missed" the slide out keyboard by any chance? iPhone have one of them?
@CodyTech Root(truly unlocked), real Linux. What else is there to say?
"If you can't open it, you don't own it."
99% of this 'phone' is the property of the user. Only a few applications are the property of Nokia et al.
@HKCally Having a keyboard on the iPhone defeats the purpose of it being a touchscreen phone or any other touchscreen phone of that matter. Nobody likes hearing the clicking noise of buttons anymore.
@codepink Oh I do.. guess your statement is incorrect. And in my opinion, having 0 or 1 buttons on the entire phone is pretty impractical, not to metion how much faster and more precise typing on a physical keyboard is. Did I mention I love keyboards?
@BigJayDogg3 Doesn't this also, though debatable, have a better browser? Along with TV out? I've always been interested in this phone from a distance.
@codepink
The keyboard on the N900 doesn't defeat the purpose of making it a true computer/phone hybrid. That's why offices around the world are full of touchscreens instead of keyboards, huh?
it has the best mobile browser, period. even engadget thinks so.
@CodyTech
You can run real fullsized linux programs on this thing. You can even run something Open Office, though that is still bit too much for the processor/memory.
Can be rooted with a single command, Nokia condoned, and running amazing stuff like full 2 way ssh, sshfs, vnc, mplayer, without hacking and no worries about updates breaking everything, over the air os updates, fm transmitter (love it), fully integrated skype (can't tell the difference between regular / skype phone calls), the best browser on any mobile and flash is included, the list is pretty much endless...
What is there not to love ? :)
@codepink
anyone want to make bet codepink is younger than 16? there has been touchscreen phones WAY before the iPhone, and they were GREAT with keyboards. Treos and Blackberries were the ones that spurred off the smartphone movement, and Treos had touchscreens. You wouldnt know since you were still playing GI Joe, wait, I forgot this generation plays with Dora the Explorer...
@Rev Still, what am I going to want to do on this phone that I can't do on an Android phone? Being able to run a bunch of Linux software doesn't seem all that appealing if the software isn't retooled for the smaller screen and touch input.
I love how they have a "remove coupon" option...why would anyone want to click that? haha
@mr88 Ha! Seriously.
@mr88 Because some Dell coupons can't be combined - so sometimes you add one coupon, then another, and it removes the discounts.
Moto Razr is the greatest phone on the planet.

Nokia when will you learn I need more apps, I love apps...
@Kelso That's probably why they're going with MeeGo.
@Kelso Doesn't take much work to get vanilla Debian 'apps' running on a Maemo device.
That's over 20000 'apps'.
@Kelso
Interesting thought actually... Will Symbian apps and MeeGo apps be compatible? Will they run on both OSs?
@SeeKo
They aren't directly compatible, but Meego and future Symbian phones will both use Qt framework for applications, so porting between them should be very easy.
@TheGZeus Most vanilla Debian apps are designed for running on a full computer, with keyboard and mouse. We want phone apps, designed to run on a phone, with phone inputs (touchscreen, etc).
Goodness gracious, it was hard enough to decide the N8 would be "realistically more useful" than the awesome "super-hackable" N900, and now on top of waiting till the endish part of the year they gotta throw sales up in my face like this?? T_T
@Stealth
Just buy it already! You know you want to ;)
SCORE!!
Best smartphone ever and it is only getting better because it will get Meego running on it. And if you haven't seen what Meego looks like, your missing out big time.
@fast correction best smartphone for last generation, iphone is for kiddos :D
Python is a wierd example, as it's one of the strengths of all recent Symbian phones to be able to run Python thanks to the PyS60 project.
@rockpilp
recent?
I have been running Python scripts and trying to write them since my Nokia 6630 in 2005.
Now in 2010 i'm writing my diploma project in PyS60 and testing it on my Samsung i8910 and the old Nokia N95 :)
so, it's gone for me
quick noob question: will this work on tmo 3g in the US? I thought their band was 1700, i didnt see it in the specs. THanks!
@emad yes, i tether with this phone on both a hackintosh and windows 7 netbook and works great
by the way, when did engadget become slickdeals?
@emad, yes, it will. And only on T-Mo when it comes to USofA.
I've never felt a want so bad in my life.
Ohwait. I'm on AT&T. I think they block me out.
Darrrrnn yooooooooou!
I'm really tempted to dump my HD2 for this...but man, its such a crappy keyboard! Why would they go with a layout like that?
I bought mine when it was new full unlocked price. That's like, a 50% drop in price. I could have bought the new 360 if I waited. Then again, I don't know how I lived without my N900 before haha.
Bought after that price was staring in my face. I am no hacker but can follow most technical directions. Looking forward to getting an unofficial version of MeeGo on this phone. 369$ contract free is nice any day.
Why is is hard to believe? N900 has a great hardware, and the software-related problems have the upside of making it easier to bring it to the market. It's the classical compromise between more recent and powerful system versus a slightly aged but more tamed and "smoothed" one...
And the N900 was/is all about open-endianess and rough edges!
i hate this phone. the new firmware (PR1.2) feels like beta software. if i type too fast some of my letters are capitalized for no reason. like fOr eXamPLe this.
answering a call is now an adventure. you can pick up but there's no guarantee you'll actually be picking up, 1/3 of the time it just hangs up.
this didn't really happen before PR1.2.
@jobber99 crap i didnt realise it was cause of 1.2 but you are right i have the same problem now, but its not capping when i write too fast, it writes the special caracters, and sometimes, people tell me they just cant reach me... but for that maybe its just the bad indian mobile network...
@jobber99 Working fine for me, and I am a heavy user of the KB and make a ton of calls.
its a nice phone but being that its a one off device we cant expect any official OS update on this phone. Id probably wait for a meego device instead.
While I already have an N900, I'll be buying another one as this is too good of a deal to miss. You can't get anywhere an embedded Linux board with OMAP 3430 & GPS & WiFi & quad-band GSM w/3G modem & FM receiver/transmitter & BT & microSD slot & 32GB eMMC. The best you can get is to use either Gumstix Overo Fire + couple of other modules, or Embest SBC8100, or Compulab EM-X270, and they all miss at least several of those features while costing considerably more. That alone makes it worth $369, not to mention you get two cameras, speakers, 800x480 LCD screen and a damn-nice resistive touch-screen. I'll use those as spare parts for my current N900, while the core hardware will serve a purpose as my car's new infotainment/security system.
