@Devin I noticed on some videos (gizmodo) that holding it that way decrease wifi signal too.
Could this be one of the reasons why Steve jobs got wifi connection issue at the WWDC 2010 while trying to compare the iphone4 to the older model? How was he holding it?
@Devin you guys are all wrong, yes even Steve jobs.... This is clearly a feature by apple. It's called Apple quick chat. Statistically speaking, left handers are such chatter box, and they are responsible for 90% of total AT&T overage minutes. Apple quick chat allows those chatter boxs to cut down minutes on their uncontrollable overage and learn how keep their chats into lightning quick 5 seconds. For those who don't have unlimited plan, this will save them a lot of money, and for those who have unlimited plan, well this will save at&t a lot of money. It's win win situation for everybody. Quite frankly it is just simply magical.
@NextGen Ya know, if none of them noticed it and their own CEO had issues, makes me wonder if Apple rushed the iPhone 4 out to compete with the EVO 4G and other android phones sooner rather than catching up later... seems like a lot of QA got missed...
@Devin , I really don't get this unfair attack. Apple is THE innovator when it comes to smartphones. This attack is wrong and the people who are perpetuating it fail to grasp the significance of this major leap in Apple's approach to gesture control. That's right genius'...gesture control. Get it...to hang up on your wife or boss you only have to HOLD THE PHONE. Simple...no other company has dared to go this far...to offer this novel type of gesture control. Only Apple.
This is what was said in the keynote. Don't know what you guys are complaining about!
"Dropping Calls... Now, we know we are not the ones to do it first... But I think we have done it the right way. Just go ahead and hold your phone... and BOOM! Isn't that magical? I think it's awesome and I'm sure you're gonna love it! Ive does, anyway."
@yankdez First lemon iMac, then overheating macbooks, followed lemon retina display (sounds stupid) then connection issues. Way to outdo yourselves Apple. You are so great (cough, cough)!!
Doubt it. They have an annual release cycle that they must meet no matter what (see; market punished nokia for delaying N8 release). The market can punish them if they miss those cycles since their reasoning for only developing 1 model per year is that thy have more time to "get it right"; holding off til they find a fix wouldn't go well with the fanbase or the shareholders.
They had to release it as is although something as drastic as redesigning a major technical spec (like the antenae/radio whatever) should have been in given much more time than they allowed for this model. 1 year simply isn't enough time to properly test a new design and iron out the kinks, which is why other phone makers start development well in advance (several years earlier usually) if it's a redesign.
It was rushed to market, yes; and there are no excuses for such a major problem given that their release cycles are stable and known. They dropped the ball when they shouldn't have.
"You mean you have to use your hands? That's a baby's toy." [/Back to the Future 2]
Honestly, the fact that one still has to use their hands at all negates all claims of 'magic'. :p +1 to Steve Jobs for his one-liner e-mail though...he should have just gone all the way and told the guy "ur dooing it rong".
This may explain the numerous issues that Mr. Jobs had during his keynote presentation. If anyone has seen it, notice how he had connection issues. He tried to say that too many people were using the wifi at the time. Little did he know that he may be holding his iPhone incorrectly at the time.

It looks like all the times he lost connection was partly due to all the WiFI, but he didnt actually DROP the service until he has it in his hands.
@SeeKo I'm just waiting for the new ipod touch, at least we know that does do phone calls

@Devin Remember, Engadget never says anything bad about Apple.
