Would one of those invisible shields fix it? That would put something between the corner and the hand. Or is it the physical mass of the hand the problem?
Translation: "Clearly you're not *cool* enough for our new phone if you can't hold it right."
The Faithful: "NO! NO, WE'RE COOL ENOUGH! BESTOW UPON US AN OFFICIAL COLOR-MATCHED THIRTY DOLLAR RUBBER BAND, AND WE SHALL FORSAKE ELECTRICAL TAPE FOR IT MAKES OUR FASHION ACCESSORY LOOK 'ICKY!' FOR THINE IS THE LIGHT AND APPLE OF OUR EYE, iMEN."
The Logical: "Dude, you spent *how* many millions of dollars reworking this thing and you didn't do proper QA?"
The Cynical: "Go drop some more acid, Stevie. I'm getting a Droid."
I have an iPhone 4, and bought it already knowing of this flaw. I'm not going to act like it isn't a big deal, it really is pretty bad, like my phone does it consistently, but Apple with either come out with a software fix (unlikely due to the issue being hardware), or they will have some kind of repair program. I'm not going to let it be a permanent condition because I always hold my phone left handed. That is my only problem with this device though. Yellowing probably happened to 1%. I am so tired of the haters of Apple products on this site. I believe you're Apple or Android, in one ship or another, there's no "superior" choice. But I do believe that people's wallets speak. And so do unbiased reviews, that aren't from a tech site that nit picks every detail. The average consumer says the most about a product, not a typical gadget nerd (I'm including myself). What I'm saying is, is that there's no "superior" choice, but people's wallets DO speak.
Attention people having 3G reception problems: I learned this complex concept in school called "problem solving." It a concept that is exactly how the name implies (hungry is to eat food, tired is to sleep) and when I saw some 3G issues I applied the same complex concept, which is, 3G issues is to switch from left hand to right hand. I know you monkeys are totally lost without your left hand, but, seriously, for the sake of your new phone, use your right hand. That's what she said.
@Cold Dead Fingers The problem is, after paying that much for a damn phone, you should be able to hold it the same way you can hold any other phone without signal strength being affected. This is an obvious design flaw. There is no need to so furiously defend Apple. It's a fucking company, relax. I don't get why people so vehemently defend corporations. This shouldn't happen, and the fact that Apple and their teat sucking supporters claim that it is a non-issue is worrying to say the least. Almost all new pieces of technology have issues during the first production run. If Apple were a responsible corporate citizen, they would admit there is an issue, and work on fixing it for the next production run. The fact that their solution to a major design flaw in their product is to hold it differently is ridiculous, especially since I am sure that everyone having this problem has probably held every other phone this exact same way without issue. Stop fellating Steve Jobs and accept the fact that this is a problem that they should work on fixing.
There has already been a lawsuit filed on behalf of consumers on this issue. it was filed by michael louis kelly. you can contact him at www.courtroomwarrior.com or via facebook thru the courtroom warrior...
I'd take the EVO between the two, for specs and Android, though I'm happy with the phone I have. The EVO, though I can't deny I love the idea of such a big screen, it just makes the phone too large, a size I could not accept. The maximum size in my opinion is possibly just a bit over a Droid, and thinner than it, such as the first iPhone's... More than that and I could not use it regularly, as a PHONE, which they each time are less like.
I was gonna get a Nexus One, but because of geographical limitations, I ended up with a Milestone (Droid). What I can't believe is the difference in Android 2.1 for these two devices. What I'm doing now is waiting for Android 2.2 and especially SD app storage...
Thomas you know quite well that no one is making calls on the pictures. So the signal dropping issue doesn't apply here. But you like teasing the idiots here...:-)
Actually, you're the idiot here. No, the people in those photos aren't MAKING calls, but thanks to the antenna's design flaw, they won't be RECEIVING any calls, either, idiot. I guess you don't use your phone to receive calls, only make them, eh?
I think the issue can be solved by getting a case for it, so that way you never actually touch the metal strip. That is pretty lame though, making your customers have to buy a case just to make the phone work right/well :/
My stomache hurt from LOL ......engadget, yall get flak for seemingly being in Apple's back pocket, but yet again u prove that yall are not too biased.
Apple wrongly designed the phone and then accusing us the consumers for holding the phone the wrong way - so fucking brilliant. Somebody needs to tell me that the next grand unified theory will involve incorporating em field theory and Jobs' reality distortion field. I am sure his field is stronger than the gravitation field...
this remind me of something where in the old days student were hit with a ruler when they wrote with there left hand to force them to write with there right hand. They did that because they were "holding it wrong". You were supposed to write with your right hand now nobody cares how you write. now will apple come and hit iphone 4 users if they hold it wrong?
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
I tried holding this way on my droid incredible
the call didn't drop
:(

Fail post, that's the correct way to hold it. People are only losing signal when they cover the entire left side of the phone.
@Jayss
you're lucky I accidentally up-voted you - fact is you're just wrong.
There's a gap on the bottom left that, if bridged, causes the issue.
L2Facts.
On second thought - why hasn't anyone coined the term "Foxconn's Revenge" yet? *grins*

damn! that's a real issue, either all of you guys go get anti-static gloves or buy another phone, another less...hhhmmm...magical!!!
They should email this to apple who told them that they were holding it wrong :D

Hey! Take That Steve Jobs... You "Dont hold it that way" teller >.
I CANN SOLVE THIS
LOL okay just make the side of the phone kinda like the side of the zune hd where the "steel panel" is slightly recessed
My stomache hurt from LOL ......engadget, yall get flak for seemingly being in Apple's back pocket, but yet again u prove that yall are not too biased.
THIS THREAD MAKES ME SO HAPPY!
/cruise
LOL This just made my day. EPIC!
FYI - all of those screenshots show the phone using wi-fi or an app that doesn't require a 3G signal.
