@Glitch Actually it wasn't that bad. Due to my reservation, my wait was only 2 hours...in comparison to 14 hours that my non-reservation buddy had to face.
nothing new every release they come out with something faulty but people still tent to go buy an iphone. with apple the first ones get crap and the last ones get the best stuff. while the people slept on the floor on the side walk and got a phone that can break easy has yellow spots in the screen and had to be up all night to pre order but store was down, paid 200 or 300 and got 2 years of slavery with att. the last guy got a iphone 3gs for 250 on craig list or ebay OS 4 unlock and jail broken no contract whos winning the first in the line or the last one to catch up with apple???
I never bought my iPod touch until a year after the 2G was released, and then the 3G came out a week later.
I was lucky enough to get it before my 14 day warranty (futureshop) went away, and I had no issues.
Some products are just done right, but if your selling a phone to millions of people in the first day, things tend to go wrong..
This reception issue is a pretty big deal, and steves response is obviously full of lies.. but they will fix it eventually, he is just stalling the press for a tiny bit before Apple releases the new batches, with special coding on the antennas to prevent bridging.
With Apple, your best bet is to wait, early adopters are generally the beta in testing phase, the third batch is where its at.
well, this doesn't happen in germany. apple's also selling through one provider only (Deutsche Telekom) but there are no dropped call issues or anything either.
only if i wrap my hands around the antennae aaall the way i maybe lose one bar.
apart from that, i don't really hold my phone this way anyway (at least not in portrait)
I can duplicate the problem as long as I put the iPhone in a death grip. Signal goes from 3 bars (-85 dBm) to 1/0 bars (-113 dBm). Otherwise it's fine, though the attenuation is really apparent. I was going to get a case of some kind anyway, but it definitely won't be an Apple bumper.
At least the tinfoil hatters will be off Engadget's back for a few hours.
I think all those places or those pics - none of it require an ATT signal to be strong - you dont even need it. I think its just when you talk you just make sure you are not holding it too tight at that place ..
And more over ive been calling random people to test this .. and even when the bars dropped badly - the call never dropped.
I am a Fan of Apple - but i think my testing capabilities are decent enough to make a rational comment !
Half the pictures are of Face Time, Which is only on a wifi network.... Holding the phone in that spot does not affect the wifi signal. Funny how this blog calls out the iphone on a number of occasions on this issue but I barely see 1 article about the continued problem of the Nexus One. Also HTC's Response to the Glass lifting off the phone as a minor issue and nothing has been done and one article being mute about that issue.
It has been quite evident the last few months that this is an Android Community on this blog. I am not going to sit here and argue about which phone is better, Cause I don't care what other People think. This is my Shit and If I choose to love it, then nothing else matters. Until a company can come out with an overall better mobility experience the iPhone wont be touch for a while.
Wat -_-? Engadget has been in the bed with Apple for years now, finally they have redeemed themselves. Clearly you didn't read the review for the iPhone 4G on this site that said it was the best thing since sliced bread.
@Anticrawl in bed with apple, so because a company makes great devices for the most part they were penalized for reporting how great they where. Its one thing to report about this issue but now just today there have been 5 posts, this being the latest on just this issue. What are they trying to accomplish. They AT&T Bashing, the issues some and yes few are having on at&t Are small in numbers, Engadget just keeps fueling the fire with negative posts.
@djzapp Have you tested this yourself? You're bridging the two antennas, the 3G antenna and the WiFi/bluetooth/gps antenna, there's a good chance that will affect wifi signal too (then again it might not).
Does being left handed mean my palm wont reach the left hand side of the phone? I hold my hand in the right side and in such a way only 2 of my fingers touch the side.
Wow, what a design oversight by apple, they still make better phones than anyone else, I mean COME ON, who else thinks the evo 4g is a big ugly brick?
@George I don't like the EVO. The screen is too big for my liking. But at the moment, the EVO is "a better phone", primarily due to the fact that it's able to keep a signal whilst being held.
p.s. I have a Macbook Pro and an iPhone 3G, so not an "Apple hater"
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
This is gonna be best Friday. I can feel it.
But thats not the way you hold your phone while you make a call.
Hahah Engadget nice. Still not an issue on my phone thank god.
Ha ha ha ha ha I Phone 4= fail !! Android for the win!!!
Thomas Ricker will be working for Gizmodo next week
@MattsZ
yeah not likely since gizmodo is even a worse apple fan-page
Yeah...they COULD have advertised that before I stood in line and paid $300 for this thing.
@Oxyrt
This is why you don't wait in line for technology.
@Glitch
Actually it wasn't that bad. Due to my reservation, my wait was only 2 hours...in comparison to 14 hours that my non-reservation buddy had to face.
Apple employees and models are non conductive.
@prokrity
No they just use Non-Conductive Lube
Does apple realize that they are the laughing stock of all jokes right now?
Obviously not. Steve's pockets are still probably really deep..
@tempbmx no matter how deep your pockets are, you cant beat cancer. AIDS however, is a different story.

@josemedina1983 im with the first in line guys.
it might have its quirks but apple will fix it.
they always do.
Annoying orangee
hahahaha
Beautiful.
Apple iPhone 4 - $199
Bumper for phone - $30
the ability to hold my phone any way i like - priceless
I bet Jobs is face-palming by now, regretting that he sent that email :D

I say get them engadget. Cupertino Cops (CC) now want to teach us how to HOLD :P

We will look forward that you don't have this type of problems in iPhone 5.
- S. Jobs
I think we are supposed to use the Force to hold it
Dear Engadget what a shame the gizmodo story didn't warn you, you may no longer attend WWDC
- Steve Jobs
Best post of the day Engadget!
If we're all holding it wrong, then we're all holding it right.
Glad we settled that one.
So glad I sold my pre-order now. And I can't stand AT&T's new data plan. I have to have unlimited for GPS for my new job.

Having sweaty palms probably makes this a lot worse.
@Jono20 You make me think of Steve Ballmer somehow...but thinking he wouldn't use an iPhone anyway so...it doesn't matter right? :P
Those hand models are dead.
Dear engadget,
Here is my instant reaction: OOOOOOwned!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh the irony!

@Bratyr
Yes no issue with wifi at all, and all is fine with a bumper or case.
Not like I wasn't going to get one anyway.
@djzapp Don't really care about holding Apple to any sort of high standard, do you?
It turns out, this is part of some brilliant engineering. - Steve Jobs
It turns out, you engineered it wrong.
Does being left handed mean my palm wont reach the left hand side of the phone? I hold my hand in the right side and in such a way only 2 of my fingers touch the side.

To those who bought the iPhone4 you swiped your cards wrong, go back and let our Apple and AT&T reps take another check...donation.
-Steve 'Save The Best For Cash' Jobs
It's magical how the bars just disappear into thin air.
