If you watched the
most recent episode of The Engadget Show, then you know that Jimmy Fallon had a lot to say about the iPhone -- particularly the fact that he's been fed up with his 3GS' dropped calls, and was planning a jump to an Android device on Verizon if the iPhone 4 didn't improve things. You see, he takes a path through Midtown Manhattan where his calls are dropped in two specific locations on a daily basis. In his words: "It cuts out at 27th st. and cuts out again around 47th st., and it's awful, I can't take it." Jimmy told us that he'd test the path with the iPhone 4 and see if things improved, and he's recounted what happened yesterday in an email:
I did the experiment. I tried to stay on the phone from downtown Manhattan to Midtown with no dropped calls. (usually I get 2 drops)
I got..... (drum roll)
No dropped calls!!! Not one.
I'm a believer.
iPhone 4.
So
like us, he's getting better reception on the new phone (despite the antenna issues). What about you guys? We know that there are definitely
noticeable, real signal issues, but how has your connection been? More dropped calls or less? Let us know in the poll below!
Is your iPhone 4 dropping fewer calls?| Yes, it's definitely improved over my 3G / 3GS. | 11542 (16.9%) |
|---|
| It seems about the same. | 5105 (7.5%) |
|---|
| Actually, it's worse. | 9342 (13.7%) |
|---|
| I don't have an iPhone 4, but I like participating in polls. | 42371 (62.0%) |

I LIKE TAKING POLLS

So I drove 79 miles to the Apple store today to discuss antenna shorting issues.
The apple store employee said he had the same issue. Showed me his iPhone 4 with a case on it. Had the nerve to tell me 'you just have to hold it differently' or get a case in an obvious fanboy way. Oh boy i lost it. I said are you really going to tell people how to hold a phone....can you freaking hear yourself. Way to line yourself up for a class action suit. His manager came and talked to me, they gave me a free apple case and that was it. I figured theres no point replacing the phone when they are ALL defective...
If apple doesn't fix this bs I'm joinining the inevitable law suit against them.
@jmaine
what other answer did you expect?
I wish the poll had a button for "I egt better than 3gs, but when held the wrong way it is far worst."
Yes, I am experiencing the issue.
Can't we just see Jimmy Fallon dropped on his head?
I'm experiencing lass drop calls. And not only that my internet connection over 3G is faster.
He isn't holding it left handed, which is where everything goes wrong. So this test is inconclusive.
There's a solution for this problem.
Verizon start selling SIM phones and at&t unlock your iPhones.
Everyone own your android and iPhone at the same time and use them world wide.
* my ALMOST wet dream fantasy: iPhone dual bootin' android & iPhone OS like Mac does BUT w/o all the lags~
Much worse for me.
Where my old phone worked (my house) but not so well, the new phone has dropped a dozen calls.
Where a friend's 3G (not even 3GS) maintained a 3G connection on highway 280 (from the start in SF to Palo Alto), the iPhone 4 dropped to edge twice and consistently had fewer bars.
I've been into the apple store to have my network settings reset, and now the phone goes to EDGE even more than before, but 3G performance is still junk.
I'm on the verge of activating my old phone. I can't make or receive calls with any consistency.
He must be holding it right.
wait, people make calls with their iPhones??!
:P
Honestly tho, in the last 48 hours, i have only spent just over an hour on the phone... I need to spend more time with it before judging, but I never really lost too many calls in the first place... Definitely a few more than I did on Verizon before I got my iPhone, but not a hell of a lot
Jimmy Fallon is the biggest kiss-a** ever! You have to watch the interview with Roger Waters (from Pink Floyd).. he saw through the BS of Fallon and was completely uninterested in whatever Fallon was mumbling :)
i admit that the whole losing bars things is an issue but even when i have no bars i can make calls and use data. IDK what the real prob is but even when holding the phone "wrong" it works perfectly.
Guys kinda funny...liked him better on SNL.
I got my iPhone 4 on launch day...I read all the prior days stories about signal and antenna ups and downs depending in how you hold the phone. End I'd the day...it's the fact that I live in the Edge network and signal was 5 bars midtown and lucky to get 1-2 anywhere else! Today, I'm 5 bars string EVERYWHERE and I see the dropped signal when you overlap the antennas. Who gives a crap! I put invisasheild and bumper on it...BAM, no antenna drops, no signal changes and hold it how I want! Oh and despite the fact that I love the new design and feel of the phone, the bumper makes a huge difference in holding it given how thin the phone itself is.
So quit ur whining folks and get a bumper and love your new phone! Cause the EVO?!? that is the ugliest monstrosity of a phone I've ever held! If the thing was any bigger, they could rename it the eePC:p
@binarydaddy
It never crossed your mind that a lot of people does'nt want to buy a bumper because they want to keep the Iphone as pure as possible?
