We already knew that T-Mobile's version of the
Samsung Galaxy S would be called the
Vibrant, and it looks like the carrier is now starting to share a bit more not-too-surprising information about the phone in what they call an "early FAQ." That includes the first official pictures of the device with T-Mobile branding, and details on some of the phone's specs, including the somewhat interesting tidbit that while the Vibrant "benefits from enhanced speeds with T-Mobile's HSPA+ network," it is "not an HSPA+ device." Otherwise, T-Mobile has simply confirmed that the phone will indeed come with Android 2.1, and that it of course packs a 1GHz Samsung Hummingbird processor and that standout 4.0-inch
Super AMOLED display. Still no official word on a launch date just yet, but T-Mobile is promising to share at least a few more details when its
countdown reaches zero late tonight.
[Thanks, Brent]
@PathogenX
1) The Samsung overlay is crap.
2) Samsung will pull a Behold 2.
3) The phone is plasticy and appeats cheap, unlike iPhone 4, regardless of both your or my feelings towards the iPhone. Oh, and they removed the front camera. Say goodbye to Fring, Skype, Qik, face recognition, eye tracking, and any other cool application to that.
@TareG
1) Not crap
2) Will update with 2.2
3) Not as "plasticy" as one might think. If you scratch the back of your phone (not if when), a plastic back is much easier (and cheaper) to replace than a metal or glass backside. Also the heavier an object the more force with which the product will hit the ground, increasing your chances that it will sustain heavier damage.
@PathogenX
I was looking forward for the Galaxy S for Verizon but am hesitant to buy Samsung due to unfulfilled android update promises on prior phones. I do really enjoy their products but will most likely wait for the Droid X as high sales will result in updates.
@spacemonkeymojo Samsung has shipped over 1 million phones to over 100 carriers internationally, I wouldn't worry about the sales figures...
@TareG Last time you've used, if ever the Samsung overlay? I haven't used Ninja blur or whatever Moto is calling it these days, but Samsung get's the worst wrap for their UI, and I understand it isn't original or pretty, but it is simple and adds functionality. I'd prefer vanilla, but Sense is bloaty, Blur was crap, Touchwiz (at least on the Humingbird) is fast and improves stock (though I still want stock, because I want timely updates).
I just figure you haven't used this phone much, if even at all, in a store or elsewhere. Weight and size couldn't be better in my book.
@juanvaldez
So the overlay is good?
Well it shall be here very soon at tmobile and I guess I will be the judge of everything. Can't infer too much until using the actual product.
It looks promising. I am very interested and happy tmobile is getting such a nice phone.
@TareG
Your iPhone will feel plasticky real soon now Mr Jobs antenna cock up means you need a rubber case to make a call.
@PathogenX Maybe the Samsung overlay can be turned off?
I hope they give it better support than when they released the behold2
After hearing all these complaints about Samsung's terrible support, I'm not sure if I want to replace my Nexus One which already has Froyo...
Well given that the only reason to get T-Mobile right now is their faster HSPA+ network, the fact the Galaxy S isn't getting it is a total deal breaker.
I wonder if it will work no matter how you hold it...
HSPA+ offers speeds of up to 56mbps down and 22mbps up. HSPA offers speeds of up to 14 Mbit/s in the down and 5.8 Mbit/s up. Any HSPA device is HSPA+ compatible because the latter is evolutionary. It is a pretty meaningless thing for T-mobile to say, I think it was just a chance to plug their network.
WIN
Why does this have more buttons compared to the generic Galaxy S? =(
@epitomics
Google enforcement.
@epitomics It has 4 buttons, which last time I checked is what is required to run Android on a device. And no, not a rooted Android kernel I'm talking about the real deal.
What reason could they possibly have for releasing this phone minus the front camera!?
why anyone would replace a Nexus One with this phone is hard to imagine, but I guess there could be a reason that makes sense. If you need massive internal memory, for example. I haven't run into an issue with that on the N1. The N1 is a heavy duty sleek build, which looks unique, vs the cheap plastic phones of late. All this said, this is possibly a great upgrade for people on TMo, which I've been on myself for about 7 + years.
@olypdd
1) Performance
2) Display
3) Mulimedia support
4) Bragging rights
@olypdd
5) Picture quality
6) Video quality
One of the guys at the T-Mobile store by my job said that the Galaxy S is coming out next month 7/17.
Lets see: great screen, great processor/video power, light + slim, good custom UI + already rooted, yep, buying it!
So, no 21 Mbps (theoretical). Just 7.2.
That's a fail.
@muchdrama
Your at home internet connection isnt even 7.2mbps fast.
@ConceptVBS Your right. "Home internet connections" can run up to 50mbps in my area if you choose a cable provider.
@ConceptVBS My home internet connection is WAY faster than 7.2 Mbps. I was just wondering why a state of the art phone doesn't have what's needed to run HSPA+, that's all.
I think those are great points, but there is something about putting great power inside a cheap plastic shell. If that's the case, I personally wouldn't feel like I'm holding a high end quality device. I love the build of the HTC Desire, and N1, as well as some of Motos offerings. Very professional looking and solid. We'll see how this looks when it rolls out.
Too true, step aside myTouch (bout time).
I qualify for an upgrade and am now month to month with TMo. If they are getting a dual core processor phone later this year, it's worth the wait. Especially when I have an N1 running froyo.
@olypdd what dual core processor phone? shhhhhhhhhhiiiiiit I was planning on getting the Vibrant next month. I don't want tmo to come out with a better phone the following month lol
@junglebear20
LOL that was that Android 3.0 thing I had seen ... hmm ...
maybe hold off a month then, see if anything surfaces? maybe you'll hear something of the phone you don't like ...
why the f-ck did they get rid of the front face camera?!!!!!?
There is a rumor that there is an HTC Vision with dual 800 mhz processor- see http://phandroid.com/2010/06/25/dual-core-4-3-inch-htc-vision-headed-for-t-mo-this-year/
It's only a rumor but if you're someone only upgrading when you qualify, this is worth taking note of.
Without a front-facing-camera, stuff like face time or skype video chat wouldn't be an option O_o ... is this because T-Mobile are saving that service for other phones specifically, or is it because they feel like their network isn't ready for it or... just too many things one can speculate at this time.
@buoy- you could be right, and maybe this HTC Vision or a new high end Moto smartphone will come so equipped. I personally could care less about the ffc or flash. Flash usually ruins the shot anyway.

You're 2 days late to the news, but thanks for posting anyways...
Are we that blinded by iPhone 4 that we're ignoring other carrier/device news? Wonder how long that'll last... probably until rumors of the next iPhone and then those will overshadow everything. blargh.
@moonrock
hah only saw this last night, but still funny

Is there a Android device thats perfect? Every phone i seen is missing something...
Another iPhone copycat.
@bluboi917 you are dumb there is no feature that the iPhone has that a Android phone doesnt have. I like my iPhone but you sound stupid
@Applefan31290 Someone's got their panties in a bunch tonight lol.
@Applefan31290 And yes it still LOOKS like an iPhone.
@Applefan31290 very true. the iphone has a better app base but android has been running the "amazing folders and bottom app bar" for quite a while. what the iphone os has that the android hasnt had 6 months ago is nil. the iphone4 looks nice tho.. except too many bugs on too big of a percent of devices. :(
@mosaicbrandon - Oh, well forget it then. NO front cam, no reue HSPA+? Ill wait for streak or Android Sidekick.
