im surprised that so many people are actually willing to pay for a jailbroken iphone 3gs.......
interesting statistic: 77% of iPhone 4 sales are upgrades.
@HighestRanked2 I wouldn't necessarily come to the same conclusion. Historically, Apple has had a very loyal customer base which has admittedly expanded greatly in th elast decade. That being said, this tells me that the Apple loyalists continue to buy their product, but that the iPhone 4 may have failed to bring in new followers (compared to the 3G and 3GS). And I know that's not a completely fair comparisson for several reasons. However, if you look at other manufacturers, I would be surprised if the ratio of returning:new customers were not very different (would love some stats on this if anyone could provide). Again, I realize this isn't a perfect comparisson because all other manufacturers that i can think of have many phones. Not just one device. All of that and more considered, I think this speaks more to market saturation and diminishing marginal sales. Again, no evidence to support this . . . What do you guys think?
Fact: things that suck don't sell like this.
Stop the hate.
@John22s
McDonalds sells a lot cheeseburgers. Are they great too?
@MuahMan
How much do those burgers cost? Oh yeah, 70 cents.
F*ck off, troll.
Read the reports guys. This isn't 1.7 new iPhone customers. 70 percent were iPhone upgrades.
@hitdog042 bah, posted as i wrote my post!
@hitdog042
But the 500,000 new iPhone 4 users still blow away the competition, at 120,000 being "their-most-sold-in-a-week" phone, the Motorola Droid
@hitdog042
the rest were android converts
i'm curious though, how many of these sold were new iphone users? i work w/ a lot of iphone users (12-15 in my dept alone, a good third of us) and everyone that was eligible or would be this year (thx to the upgrade friendliness) got this device.
if not for at&t going easy on upgrades, would it have sold that many? are they growing their installed base?
i'm not an android fanboy, kudos to apple. just curious.
My estimate was about 2 million by weeks end we'll have to wait and see for those numbers.
Android sucks. Move on.
found this funny: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg
@cap87
I was just about to post this. It's a MUST WATCH video for anyone in the iPhone 4 vs EVO debate (At least to have a laugh, I'm not choosing sides as I like both phones).
@cap87
Lmao. I swear we have a friend with the iPhone that thinks along those lines. We've all asked him why he has the phone, and the most he can tell us is that everyone has one, ...wow. Sometimes we wonder why he's are friend, then we realize he is comical.
Don't mean to be an Apple fanboy...
but this launch kicks the **** out of any launch with Android.
The interest for the new iPhone 4 is much higher than any other phone, due to its sleek design and the power behind it (for an Apple iPhone)
That is the reason NEW iPhone 4 users smoke the next best selling phone (that isnt Apples) by nearly 4x.
everyone face it... apple products will always evoke rabid controversy
in every issue... either love em or hate em... there is no middle ground
Apple just delivered 1.7 million phones in 3 days. The pre orders were taken over couple of weeks.
@HillBill
Thats close but I'm pretty sure that they are not counting the total deliveries because I'm sure that number accounts for all the pre-orders, and any preorder taken after the 15th hasn't even been delivered yet.
so what's the status on jailbreaking now a days. Haven't had a iPhone since the first one.
Can you still set this up on T-Mobile??
Obviously Verizon is a nono?
All I can say is WOW... Apple has to be doing something right!
No wonder they had problems processing orders... that's over 5 phone orders per second coming in day and night!
@rombe3jr too bad M$FT has been doing 7 copies of win7/sec since launch?
and they also sold 2 million left hand iGloves that dont short out signal.
:D
Well with that many people switching from their old iPhone to the new one, AT&T's network should improve a whole lot with all the dropped calls.
@bertilak
"Are there other ways to video chat? Sure. But, in my opinion, there aren't any at present that are as intuitive or instantaneous as the solution provided by the iPhone4. That's all I'm saying. "
I'm sorry, but how is this not intuitive or instantaneous:
Unlock phone: Type in "Son" or the name of the person you want to talk to on the keypad. When "Son" pops up on the screen, press: Option, scroll to Call - scroll to Video call, press dial. Voila, it's dialing. No menu needed, everything accessed from the "home screen". Or you can just set it up to start a video call as default mode for the call button.
Or instead of the above just hold a button for 2 seconds, say "Son, video call" and it will automatically do the steps for you. How is that hard, difficult, unintuitive?
This is on a nokia e72, it works on the e71 too and several other models that are now obsolete, I can't for the life of me work out how Apple has managed to make that any easier unless it works via telekinesis.
And the video call will use the existing network and has done for years and years and years and years.
I can appreciate how Apple might be very easy to get used to for people who are senior citizens or elderly who've never used technology, but that does not make Apple the first ones to integrate or think of every single detail - it's just because you haven't tried it or heard of it before and everyone else sucks at marketing, but don't let that get in the way of reality.
I like Apple devices, the do work very well and are easy to use, but it's not the second coming. Come on, video call? It's been in style and gone out of style again. Only people I know who still use it on phones are deaf mutes.
EVERY SINGLE ANDROID PHONE IS THE RIP-OFF OF THE ORIGINAL IPHONE!!!! NEVER FORGET!!!
One million plus sales numbers was always expected.
I'm curious as to how many of those sales are contract renewals?
It'll be interesting to see over the next few months if iPhone is increasing market share or not.
Strange..? When you read this new artikel from the serius newpaper ingenøren.dk today monday
Antenna Professor : Iphone is the market's worst phone
(translate from danish til english )
Apple may not have spoken to some experts in the antennae, in the fourth version of the Iphone was posted on the street, so it would disastrous antenna designs have revealed evaluate antenna Professor Gert Frølund Pedersen from Aalborg.
Gert Frølund Pedersen, a professor with special responsibilities from Aalborg University and expert in the design of antennas for cellular phones does not need much reflection to engineer questions about the iPhone antenna is the worst in the mobile market today.
" I am convinced , " he says.
" Apple could not have asked any of the established firms for advice , " adds antenna professor.
It is far from a secret that this will prevent the antenna characteristics, how it is being held in the hand. According to Gert Pedersen Frølund there may be up to ten times the strength of difference , depending on where and how the user holds his mobile phone.
In Apple's case, it led to complaints from users of the Iphone four who came on the market this month. Particularly the left-handed experience that mobile signal drops out or is reduced sharply when they keep it in your hand .
This is because the special assembly, where the phone's metal frame acts as an antenna. The effect appears to people to curb when the phone and that means big differences.
"There are up to factor of ten difference in how you hold the phone. It's really big numbers , " stresses Kurt Frølund Pedersen.
He estimates that it is now too late for Apple to fix up the decisive fourth Iphone
"Of course , problems can be duplicated. When the antenna is so small , so should not take much to make it a little better. But it does not solve problems moving around a bit on the phone's components. This requires a modification of the design and it is not a single case , " explains antenna professor.
Actually, the antenna very much the mobile phone itself , not just in Iphone but also in other mobile phones. What is commonly referred to as the antenna , connect the radio chip , together with those parts of the phone , which actually functions as an antenna.
' Therefore, the antenna always designed from the product , " stresses Kurt Frølund Pedersen.
It is also common knowledge in the industry that the phone uses affects the antenna characteristics. Gert Frølund Pedersen and his colleagues have therefore prepared the technical specifications for a test of the phone's antenna properties. It simulates the phone is held up to the head - both sides mind you, because there can be large differences in power from one side to another.
However, it is not yet a part of the standardized test to examine how the hand affects the signal, but it works among other Gert Frølund Pedersen . As recently as this month , he was chairman of a conference on standardization of tests of mobile phones with 150 participants in Aalborg. The aim was , among other things that have influence with the hand in the test.
He is convinced that anyone who has experience in manufacturing mobile phones, could have told Apple that it is essential for measurements of the hand affect the antenna , even if it is not yet part of the standardized test .
On the other hand, recognizes Gert Pedersen Frølund that Apple is fantastic to design its products differently than their competitors.
"But it seems so ludicrous that you now for $ 30 can buy a rack, which ensures that you get the distance to the antennas . We scientists are laughing , but Apple earn money , " he notes .
Apple has not yet called Gert Frølund Pedersen, although he is mentioned on a number of the world 's largest technology media, because he foresaw antenna problems already when Apple boss Steve Jobs showed the phone the first time .
"Had he phoned , I'd surely like to have spoken with him. We have helped to make antennas more than 100 companies in the world , "said Aalborg professor.

@Danishfirst
Dude this is bullsh!t...You got this from one freaking expert out of millions, the "expert" "does not need much reflection to engineer questions about the iPhone antenna", well no sh!t he said that then, he's probably never even used the thing. I've had my iPhone 4 since the 23rd (Lucky I ordered it from Apple) and I can tell you first hand that I do in fact have the antenna problem where if i hold it with my left hand the bars go down...but it never loses service, quite the contrary actually. Even when my phone had one bar while holding it with my left hand, I still downloaded apps with lightening quick speed. Seriously, way faster than my old 3G...I downloaded the Onion News Network app in under 10 seconds (That includes install time)..that is phenomenal. Worst phone (or antenna) on the market...bullsh!t. As a general rule of thumb, don't take advice from faceless commentators who have never actually used or dealt with any problems dealing with the actual device they commentate on.
@Kejeza
Chill out. I bet there are many more experts who would agree with that professor. They placed the antenna in the wrong side of the bottom of the phone. They need to fix it. And they need to do it ASAP. Whether its a hardware issue or not!
Stop defending an obvious design flaw.
@P Z Wrong side? Are you stupid? There are only four ways to put an antenna. The GSM radio HAS TO be placed as far from the human cheek as possible. The iPhone is a right handed phone, so, naturally the antenna will be place on the left side facing outward.
I have an iPhone 4 and have had no issues. I get BETTER reception than any phone i've used in the past (Includes VZW, Sprint and T-Mo, too) and better than that I don't need a "professor" to figure that out.
Seriously, heres the honest deal: You block the radio, you lose signal. You use it right, you get better reception than you started with on a previous phone. It's a great solution, granted the user participates, instead of just bitching. It doesn't take much brain power to use the phone righty.
If you think iPhone or iPad sucks why don't you make something that's sod 1.7 million in 3 days or even 2 million in 2 months then we'll talk. Get on it kiddo.
@Raytem you mean like McDonald's Big Mac ? best selling food in the world, but it's still junk...
@phearme This is just a hater talk. Honestly, thing is all of have serious ego problem. You know iPhone has more pros then cons. You know it's not just popular because it's like big Mac, it's popular because it has quality and great support. It has OS which is hands down have much more potential then Android at least at this time. Making a phone by putting in some features which geeks are dying for without much research doesn't make it better or powerful. Stick with your, whatever you have, less people on AT&T network better for the one who has iPhones. Btw I don't have iPhone.
@Raytem
That's crazy to say iOS has more potential than Android. Then only reason Android is on the rise now is because of its potential.
@cruncis
buddy here we are talking about the iphone 4 issues. Not comparing iphone and Android.
Plus u r true, but does that mean iPhone don't have issues?, it does right?! thats what steve jobs admitted aswell right? thats it.
also all the users are not geek like us to go in tech web-site and post comments like we do.
there are problems in android devices aswell but it DoesNot mean that iPhone can't have.
IPhone 4 do have call dropping issues, that what I said in my comment, isn't it? thats it buddy.
well best wishes for your next iPhone 4 n Enjoy.
btw, ios4 is amazing!!
@TomSawyer
buddy is that the langugae you use Public forum? Kindly please Mind your language.
Plus, I already have iPhone 4, thankx for the prediction though.
just a lil thought, there can be flaws in any tech devices, ok?! dont have to take it too hard about it.
Wasn't there Flaw in 27" iMac? which they fixed it later. Similarly iphone 4 also has issues and mine one loses a bar (more) when my hand is lil moist.
Just lets hope Apple will come out with Fix, as they did with iMac, like Toyota is doing with is cars.
Chill out, and just learn to keep it cool and real.
just don't panic like arrogant early-teen-age.boys. :-)
- cheers!
Its amazing they have sold 1.7 mil despite bad reviews and ugly publicity. Perception of apple is everything. http://bit.ly/cKhv1X
@dlove So, now, you expect 608 people to represent EVERYBODY?!?! What the fuck are you smoking? Did you know that California is the LARGEST buyer of iPhone in the U.S?!?! So, of course there would be a large amount of upgrades from here (yes, I live in Cali). And, iPhone is iPhone, but the iOS platform has plenty of new members in iPod Touch, iPad (have you seen the 3 million sold post?) and iPhone 4/3GS sales. Plus, all of the upgraders like me are giving our old 3GS' to people who've never owned iPhones in the past. In my case, I'm giving my old phone to my father. There is no post for those situations, though. iOS are still finding more new users new users than Android, just from three devices.
I'm not surprised. I can't wait to see that number climb up like there is no ending to the success. I love my iPhone 4 and am glad to see my company thrive, so, they can provide more great products in the future!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FL7yD-0pqZg
Explains it all. Get them 3G's and Wi-Fi's
FaceTime smoke, don't breathe this!
OR RATHER SHOULD I SAY APPLE SELLS 1.7 MILLION PROBLEMS THROUGH SATURDAY...
EVEN THE SOFTWARE IS MIDBLOWING, ALL THE GLORY BEEN TAKEN AWAY BY THE QUALITY OF THE PRODUCT THEY BUILT THIS TIME....SAY ITS SCREEN, THE SO CALLED SCRATCH PROOF BODY, DROPPING CALLS AS A RESULT OF FLAWED DESIGN...
1.7 million people having to hold it the way it should.. I'll pass on this frenzy.
