The new iPhone 4 features FaceTime®, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, and Apple's new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video.
"This is the most successful product launch in Apple's history," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply."
iPhone 4 also features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD 720p video recording, Apple's A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time-in a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.

Apple reinvented the mobile phone with its revolutionary iPhone and App Store, and has recently introduced its magical iPad which is defining the future of mobile media and computing devices.
@dlove Just out of interest, can you point me to the source of your data to back up your assertion that most of the 1.7 million were upgraders? People believe what they want to believe. The amount of shit that is spouted in these comment sections is incredible.
Go away, run a business and come back when you've got a clue.
@dlove Android is an OS, not a phone. So Apple selling that many phones in such a short time is impressive. If HTC sold that many at one of their launches I'm sure they'd send out a press release!
@Mortimus
and that's why i stated android 'platform' and not phone...
@wilvo You honestly do not think that the VAST majority of those 1.7million were upgraders?! The number of new customers, at least in the U.S., for Apple is not what you might think...it actually very low and according to their financials, it's international sales that's driving their growth.
@dlove Considering Apple are only selling a single device each year while the Open Handset Alliance sells hundreds of different models at all different price points, this number is not to be sniffed at.
The biggest selling Android device so far appears to be the DROID, which is available for free or in buy one get one free offers. The iPhone is never free.
This is not to downplay the success of Android, but until Apple and the OHA release phones on the same day, same network, with the same price and the same featureset, comparisons are futile.
@wilvo here you go...
iPhone 4 launch stats: 77% upgrades, possibly 1.5M sold...

@Dale P
for your info, in some countries iphone is free if you are on a highe enough plan.
that is how i am going to get the iphone 4
@dlove
Those number keep changing, depending on which Google exec is talking. One says 60,000, another says 100,000 and yet another says 160,000.
It's amusing that you think the only reason for such high iphone 4 sales is down to existing owners, yet simultaneously imply that Android activation numbers consist of entirely new customers.
Considering a new "best yet" Android device is released every month, it's likely that a few of those activations are rabid fandroids upgrading yet again. In addition, a very high proportion of Android users don't even know they have an Android device. My brother bought an Experia X10 a few weeks ago. I had to point out to him that the operating system was Google's Android. He bought the X10 because he's always been happy with Sony Ericsson phones, and saw no reason to change. The operating system had no bearing on his decision, and if I hadn't pointed it out, he would have been none the wiser.
I for one, don't really mind if Android overtakes Apple in market share. As other's have stated it's the consumer that benefits from the competition. I've been very happy with the original iPhone and now the iPhone 3G that I own. I've never had a dropped call, never ran out of battery, and never had to restart the phone (with exception to upgrading software). I quite liked the OS on my brother's X10 and unfamiliar UI aside, my only gripe was that it wasn't quite as smooth as my 3G.
people are crazy :) after iphon ..
2 million iGloves Sold to hold the iphone for lefty's
@DoomLight bumper is enough ...
@DoomLight
Right, 120% of the population is left-handed.
Good stuff, I love the haters always saying something is behind but yet all the other phones try to imitate. Anyway great phone period. Excellent numbers and the white ain't even released yet.
The Antenna issue is pretty funny.. if you just assume for a moment every phone has it, it seems to just bother a certain % of users and not the others. Maybe because they have stronger signal.
But anyways, this is phenomenal, however, this is that much more pressure on Apple to fix the phone issue because the problem with selling so many phones is that it makes any issue in the phone that much more apparent. That's why media outlets were all over this story.
It's going to be a nightmare for Apple if they don't put out a resolution a.s.a.p. Kind of a double edged sword for them. If they manage to resolve the issue, then they look that much better to those 1.7 million, and to everyone else.
@Ryuuzaki

Where's the resolution?
In 2007, Apple's target was to sell 10 million over the entire year » http://j.mp/9pFmi0 They have come quite a ways from their humble beginnings.
i don't have an iPhone, probably won't buy one.
but shifting 1.7M is very impressive
Apple must be doing something right /or/ there are a lot very stupid people
(i will let you guy debate/argue about which of the above statements are correct!)
@SiG even if there are a lot very stupid people, apple is doing something right to get them :P
I'd be interested to know how many of these iPhone buyers were previous iPhone owners
@htowngator By all accounts (both independent and Apple): 70%
This isn't official until it comes from NPD. Also this world wide sells Apple is talking about.
@NattyPButter Are you implying that American sales are more important than international ones?
Being a Droid owner, this is pretty impressive.
@Distant Kudos for you're honesty, I own a new iPhone but I also respect that the Droid is one fine phone also.
It's funny that people will call you an iSheep just for buying a phone that you personally prefer. There are lots of people who need to grow up a bit and realize that it's just a phone and it has no bearing on their lives at all. I don't own one, but it's a nice device so I can see why they sold so many.
@Waltah Thank you.. I find people who have this personal vendetta against Apple 100x more annoying than the Apple fans they love criticizing.
@marblewonder
Mmm...I'd have to say I find them both equally annoying when they feel like they have to actually go out of their way to trash products they don't like.
Who cares!
1.7 million people have to deal with AT&T's crappy 3G coverage. NO THANKS!
@lcromy there is also an iphone world outside the us with no at&t problems, but it seems at&t is a real party killer over there.
@lcromy
Coverage is just fine (and quick) in my area. If it' not good in yours then don't buy it.
@lcromy
The phone was sold in 5 countries. AT&T is only here in the US.
thousands of nerds are hating iphone & co for reason x or y and millions of non nerds are happy with iphone & co.
so yes, fresh 1.7 million devices by now and there's surely more to come.
@shizzledmg
To quote Relient K: "Opinions are immunity from being told you're wrong. Paper, rock, and scissors, they all have their pros and cons."
i think Nokia for example would gladly sell this manny E, N, Xpress something handsets in 3 days like Apple Just did ..
To call Apple a minor player in the Mobile Phone biz is being dumb .. !
:-))
Congrats to Apple for the amazing new iPhone and the Awesome sales:)
77%
Take that there are lot of morons out there that will buy my shit

@Makali I agree, they are all being fooled by mere propaganda!
The iPhone is a monster! 1.7 million units in that space of time is nothing short of astonishing! Haters can hate all they want, but no other phone can achieve numbers like this. Men lie, Woman lie, numbers don't.
Wow! Can you imagine the numbers if they had a different provider...?
@Jack Lithian
It wouldn't make a bit of difference. If Verizon had been the exclusive carrier then their network would be all jacked up instead of AT&T's. There's not one network in the U.S. that can handle the traffic the iPhone brings along with it without some issues.
Judging by the trend of the ranks, Apple fans are up right now, Android fans are still sleeping.
@pintonion
Either that or people are getting fed up with their continuous stream of idiotic comments in response to any article mentioning Apple.
Maybe the hate they express is a mask for their insecurity.
iPhone 4g certainly does look great on ads. but when i sit down and look at what i need and what i expect, i think i have to go with android. there's just more versatility and options with android....from different phone carriers, to screen size, to battery life, free-wifi hotspot, etc. and most importantly, my smartphone will no longer be linked to itunes. itunes is great software, but smartphones have evolved on their own. they can download and process an array of media and documents on their own without a computer. so why do we still need itunes?? give the smartphone the ability to be their own desktop and notebooks!!!
@inspiron41
I was with you until the better battery part. Can you name one Android phone that gets better life out of one battery? Then the free wifi hotspots is half true you can download something like pdanet for free and use it, but the built in first party ones are not free. Also the itunes thing, you can download any media from the iphone itunes and app store right to the iphone with out pc itunes being used. Yes if you want to sync your pc media with your iphone you have to connect to a computer, but the same is true with android.
Impressive numbers by any measure, but let's not for get that I believe the count is currently 77% previous gen upgrades. So about 1.3 million of those are people upgrading their previous gen iphones. If nothing else, that great customer retention. Apple lives off loyal customers with deep pockets.
@helfrez
That's my understanding as well (i.e., large % of upgrades from previous Gen iPhone owners). Here's a little snippet from an article that broke it out:
***
Overwhelming Repeats
Piper Jaffray reports that 38 percent more people upgraded their iPhone the first day the latest model became available compared to last year. In 2009 Jaffray reported 56 percent of iPhone 3GS buyers on launch day were upgrading their handsets and 38 percent of iPhone 3G buyers from 2008 did so.
"Apple has in three years built brand loyalty in the phone market that compels users to upgrade to the latest version and wait in line for one to six hours to pick up their iPhone," writes Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
Smartphone Loyalty
As far as wooing new iPhone users from other smartphone bases, 6 percent of non-iPhone users were switching from Research in Motion's Blackberry, 3 percent from Google's Android and 2 percent were from Nokia.
Piper Jaffray's findings appear to back up results from other surveys that suggest customer loyalty is relatively high for most, but not all smartphone brands. A Nielsen study recently found that 80 percent of iPhone users and 70 percent of Android users intended to stick with their smartphone brand. Only 47 percent of Blackberry users, however, were interested in sticking with RIM.

so the real question is where is 4.1 to 'fix' the reception 'issue' before this turns into the biggest recall/return in history as well
@nwright2
Suppose it'll be later, Monday USA = Monday night UK
@nwright2
Yeh, I hope the Nokia too will be updated:

Funny...
Ha dumb people buying a phone with problems!
