Dell Streak's supposed US packaging is gorgeous, unboxed with elegance
Well, the Brits ain't gonna be happy when they see this in the AM. What we're looking at here is presumably the Dell Streak's final US packaging -- a far cry from the cardboard boxes that the Englishmen are given (and let's not forget the silly photoshop error on the top). If the features list is correct, this five-inch Android phone is definitely headed to AT&T's 850MHz 3G band for now (hang in there, T-Mobile fans). Other than that, the accessories and the phone itself look identical to what we've got in London, but we totally wouldn't mind getting hold of this sexy acrylic box -- it'd make a pretty cool cradle, don't you think? Head over to the source link to feed your eyes.

Engadget Giveaway please?
@Lando Calrissian
No thanks.
@i3ipad
umm... Are you completely brain dead? Even people who hate this product should want to win it in a contest. As fresh as the product is you could easily sell it for over $500.
Try putting your thinking-cap on next time.
@Lando Calrissian
slap in 2.1 or even better 2.2 and I'll get this on tmob Day 1.
@Lando Calrissian
Fantastic Idea Sir! for the price of 0 I would not mind taking my pants in to the tailors and increase my pocket size for this 5" behemoth...
@Lando Calrissian
I'm surprised how much love this phone is getting. It's just too big and I'm not talking about the screen size. They could have packed that 5 incher in a much smaller package. Bezel like the EVO and as thin as an HD2/iPhone4. I would forgive it if it ran some kind of crazy chip, but it's just a 1ghz snapdragon if i remember correctly that doesn't even have the power to do 1080p out. Pretty weak for such a large device.
But hey, I'll take one for free.
@j3oomerang
it's thinner than a HD2.
iPhone 4 : 9.3mm
HD2 : 11mm
Streak : 9.9mm
I'll buy one unlocked and use it as a MID as soon as It gets Froyo 2.2 update. Hope it'll be soon.
And for the sake of comparaison,
iPhone 3GS : 12.3 mm
Nexus one : 11.5mm
Evo 4G : 12.7mm
iPad : 13.4mm
@j3oomerang You really haven't checked the specs, have you? It's less than 1 cm thick. that's a lot thinner than your iPhone 3gs. This with a 5 inch screen!
@Lando Calrissian: YES please.
that box is pretty sweet looking too....

@Lando Calrissian
agreed...but does anybody know a release date or price yet?
@NextGen
I stand corrected. Not sure why I was convinced this phone was considerably thicker from pictures I've seen over the months. You'd think its larger surface area would only exaggerate its thinness in a positive way. Anyways, I still say it's too underpowered for such a large device. Droid X, Galaxy line and iPhone4 have it beat already. Personally, I've had an EVO for almost a week now. Most probably will return it and return back to Verizon for the DX. 4G seems to be non-existent everywhere I go except for when I'm on the highway, and thats the only reason I ever switched to Sprint.
What's with the capitol building on it?
That looks damn nice.
Ever since the Adamo, Dell's shining their shit real good.
@jellotime91
I agree!
For once, a company other than Apple releases a product with beautiful packaging. It's all part of the perceived experience. First impressions count.
@jellotime91 Now ask yourself this question - which package uses more oil to produce? The UK (cardboard), or the US (plastic)?
@RincewindWiz
Well, which packaging cuts down more trees?
IMO rainforests are more important to save than some emissions from creating plastic
@jellotime91
Btw, do all of Dell's products come in a box with the State Capitol on the side?
@Apple Fan Paper isn't made from rainforest wood.
@jellotime91
utter bullshit, what a complete waste of resources, the human race is so doomed if we think this is a cool!
its packaging ffs!!! it means nothing.
@Apple Fan
you idiot, trees are grown in plantations to make packaging, growing trees produce oxygen and soak up co2, oil... well enough said you are thick.
@Apple Fan read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Pacific_Garbage_Patch
also, cardboard is made from recycled paper.
@Apple Fan
The Dell eco-friendly package uses bamboo internally, harvested on farms where its cut to a length that doesn't require replanting, and the outside cardboard is recycled, and physically smaller and probably lighter for transport.
@jellotime91 Maybe this is why the UK launch was first. Dell spent extra time on US packaging. It looks cool, but I would love to have seen this monster launch a few weeks ago.
@Apple Fan
Given that plastic is harder to recycle and is from a non-renewable resource I'd rather they use the plastic for something useful like I don't know, part of a product rather than waste it in packaging that'll be of no use to me within 5 minutes.
@RincewindWiz
The more oil they use up to make this packaging the better...how else are they going to help get rid of all that excess BP oil leaked into our oceans?
@RincewindWiz
We have lots of extra oil now though.
Love this device, will absolutely own one... but who cares about a box?
I liked Dell's other campaign of reducing plastic waste in its boxes and going with eco-friendly bamboo on some for packaging. I'm just going to throw it away anyway.
Here is where they pimp their environmental packaging: http://content.dell.com/us/en/enterprise/d/corp-comm/bamboo-packaging.aspx
And yet here there's probably more plastic in that box than is in the Streak itself! *facepalm* :D
@Ducman69
You spoke my mind. Exactly what I was thinking.
@Ducman69 Mikeo thinks you're a jackass.
@Ducman69
But with this box, do you think you would throw away? I guess not.
@Revolutionary
no your right i'll stick it on my mantle piece and hand it down to my grandchildren as a family heirloom ...
@Ducman69 it's a sad state of affairs , many manufacturers are trying to cut down on packaging to spare natural resources / cut costs and fall in line with new Co2 regulations . Some manufacturers are clearly hell bent on the "look at the shiny shiny" to flog their products. If the product was any good it would sell itself... and really do we really care what the packaging is? Once the thing is unboxed, we'll maybe keep the box for a while before it's chucked... remember your first mobile phone?? .. How cool was it!!.. Remember the packaging? .. Still got it?? 99% of us will say no (just leaving room for the 1 or 2 who are different from the rest of us).
The demand for plastics to package your new device and the profits associated have led to corporations cutting corners.. pay back for this , well there is a large stretch of coastline in the US where people aren’t swimming for a good while.
Of course there is a lot of development work going into clever/resourceful packaging which is not moving fast enough and is clearly been hampered by the need to pay shareholders!
@Ducman69
I absolutely agree with you. Who gives a crap about the box 5 seconds after you take the product out?
I think the packaging would be cool for an in-store display, but why have all that extra plastic for the regular packaging? It's so wasteful for no good reason.
@Ducman69 Maybe it doubles as an open-faced stand for people who like using their phones as bedside clocks. The writer did mention it might be useful as a cradle. It looks like wires can still get through to the top and bottom of the Streak.
Besides, of course we would throw out packaging from our other cell phones. When have those ever doubled as a display stand?
I'm not saying whether I would still throw this package in the recycler but clearly it can have more life beyond the unwrapping.
Dell PLEASE stop teasing us and release the Streak in the USA already!!!
@ASRRGR What's the price for this thing again? And any word on subsidized cost for that matter? I've seen $500 being tossed around for unlocked version, but I haven't found any official prices for the U.S launch, everything I find is for UK :\.
>ATT
Capped 3G and outrageous prices ;[
Hoping for T-mobile.
@Bearpowers
What would be absolutely the bomb for me would be to use a TMobile prepaid card combined with their non-smartphone $10 data-plan. Unless you call them and tell em, everyone has been saying they can't tell its a smart-device and bump you up. =)
@Bearpowers
I hope for T-mobile too. But AT&T is more expensive because 1. They are greedy. And 2. No roaming charges period in the U.S. You pay for the network.
@Bearpowers Yeah, but great for those of us exiled up in Canuckastan, since all three Great White Networks use AT&T bands now.
Gorgious.
@DS1495
*gorgeous
Don't mind me and my horrible late night spelling mkstakes...
@DS1495
Brilliant
Nothing against the Streak. I believe it's a great device. But a company kinda negates the claim how green their products are, when they ship it in a box like this, don't you think?
I'm convinced ATT has photos of Michael Dell and Steve Jobs in bed together.
@duggy 5:1 odds Michael is the top. Takers?
@duggy Not sure who gave a better blow job (get it?), but I think Dell will sell the Streak unlocked too.
