HTC: expect Desire, Legend and Wildfire to get Froyo 'beginning in Q3'
It's summer. It's hot. Naturally, everyone wants to lick some frozen dessert in one form or another. Shortly after the Nexus One got its absolutely official Android 2.2 update, HTC has once again leaped out to tell us of its own Froyo offering. The Taiwanese mobile giant has informed Recombu that it's expecting "several of our 2010 models including Desire, Legend and Wildfire" to join Google's latest green bot party "beginning in Q3." We went to the trouble of confirming this with HTC ourselves, and while this isn't really much of an update from the company's previous statement in terms of time frame, here's hoping that at least some of its customers will get the delivery before the summer fiesta ends.

yay evo
@Rolaundo
lol evo is not even mentioned here....neither is the incredible..LAME. Come on, HTC!
@metformin Yeah but thats the Android phone I have and it's made by HTC close enough right? Anyway had a chance to be first couldn't pass it up lol!
@metformin
Reading the links fail.
HTC specified previously that it was starting with the EVO and Incredible. This announcement just fleshes out some more of the "most phones launched in 2010" that they talked about last time.
@Rolaundo
Still no G1 love. :O(

@metformin
"expect Desire, Legend and Wildfire"
then why is there a picture of the nexus one?
@The Truth Hurts either the Wildfire is so similar to the Desire that they occupy the same spot in time & space, or there's just not a stock photo that includes it.
@metformin
All these Android update huge delays are just giving more customers to Apple. Wake up HTC & Samsung, wake up ...
@kineticdamage IMO the type of person who is waiting for 2.2 right now does not want anything to do with Apple.
I still don't understand why it's so flippin hard for HTC to come out with simultaneous Android updates for Sense phones. I have an Eris, and it's practically the same damn phone the Desire is. I know VZW has to get involved in the OTA process, but still, it just blows my mind why this is so difficult. Fragmentation has nothing to do with it, they just need to come out with a uniform plan to update all phones at once, regardless of carrier, hardware, etc. Can someone explain to me why this is so difficult to achieve?
@OCJP
The Eris is no where close to a Desire.
@Mezmryz03
Hmm I'm not veru sure about that : Froyo is particular, it's just bringing 450% faster execution.
@kineticdamage
Why? So they can wait for 18 months instead?

@Oskiee thats a no brainer
@OCJP
Eris is a rebrand of a Hero (which only just got 2.1 and will prob never get 2.2)
It isn't even in the same ballpark as a Desire which is basically a rebrand of the Nexus One
@Mezmryz03 Not entirely true. I have a Desire and wholeheartedly regret buying it. I wish I'd waited for an iPhone 4, but I'm hoping that 2.2 at least makes the Desire usable.
@Mezmryz03
You're probably right. But that is the real support cadre for Android.
@metformin
Being a Hero owner, I would say one thing.. Don't count on it.
cant wait for 2.2 on my desire!
@plenaghan88 but by the time Telstra's finished with it (in Australia anyway), gingerbread would be out.
Its times like that when I wish I had an N1 instead of the Desire
@garionw
Yeah, im really hoping telstra pushes the upgrade as quickly as possible.
Im optimistic with how quickly they fixed the GPS bug (and added the voice control) and considering its one of their flagship phones atm...that said I wont be suprised if it takes forever
@plenaghan88 Poor hero hahaha YES DESIRE COME ON!!!!!
Isn't the Wildfire almost like the Hero? Possible 2.2 release for the Hero?
Yes I know, the Hero just got 2.1 (today, actually), don't be greedy, blabla.
@DerInDerInDerInDerIn http://twitter.com/sprint/status/17030932869
@DerInDerInDerInDerIn
wildfire is more like the tattoo, legend is pretty similar to the hero though I think
@ranhalt
That tweet made me sad, and I don't own a Moment or Hero...
@ranhalt that's what sprint says, not HTC, i'm talking about the european GSM hero here
Q3? Well, that Q3 starts day after tomorrow! Still, this means we can expect one within 92 days. Not bad. :)
On another note, I kinda feel sad for HTC and the companies which use Android. It's like playing catchup with Google's speedy releases.
@egress63
Google said they'd be slowing down releases to just once a year after Ginger. Besides, Froyo is damn fast, can't ignore it. Supposedly chews up less memory, too,
@donv69
Hmmm... I did not know that. Still, 2.3 should push the envelope farther. I just saw that Gingerbread will have flac support! And better UI! Now that is awesome!
Go Google Go!
@egress63 It's their own doing. If they ran stock android their releases would be on par with teh N1
@bfdhud
not true. Droid runs stock and it cant keep up to date at the same speed as the N1. they have to design around hardware
@egress63
Since it's HTC, "Q3 2010" is to be reas as "last days of Q1 2011".
@egress63 After 47 days, it ceases to be "the beginning" of Q3.
Can we get a version of Engadget that does not list update availability for every single stupid Android phone out there?
@AceMcLoud
Why? This is news. You hear Apple fanboys complaining about it all the time.
I don't know why people complain about the number of Apple posts, or the number of Android posts. They all equal out in the end!
@AceMcLoud
Someone wants to exclude something aside from Apple? Is this real life?
Try: http://www.engadget.com/exclude/htc/
@AceMcLoud
http://www.engadget.com/exclude/android/
was that so hard? a troll and lazy... what's the world coming to?
Well if this follows the Hero pattern for promises and delivery then they should have them by mid 2012.
Why the hell do you have to wait a certain quarter for a fucking update for a certain phone from a certain carrier? Maybe so you Android geeks can get frustrated and buy a new phone with the most current Android build.
Great marketing game buy the cell phone makers.
@pspitts
Haha, your name has PSP in it...
...cause nobody buys those...
"Boo, you suck!"
...I know...
@pspitts
It's ok. It's not like we had to wait years for the update to finally have the ability to cut and paste.
Or change our wallpaper.
Or "multitask".
Or have folders.
@pspitts Nope the Evo will last me quite some time and after i get built in tethering and JIT I'm good to go!
@pspitts Why are people this daft?
@N900
Don't mind him. He was a user named cherryboom who complains about how shitty HP's graphing calculators are and uses phrases such as "GTFOOOOH!", "LOOOOOOOL!", "STFU", and "ZZZZZZZZZZZZ!".
@pspitts
You are aware that Q3 starts next week right? You are aware a quarter is 3 months tops?
Your rant is pointless.
My friend just installed Froyo on his N1 and he says it's crazy fast. Wonder if the Legend would be worth getting with the speed boost?
@donv69
Android is already crazy fast on the Legend. I have the Aria, which is essentially the same phone minus the AMOLED display, and it's completely lag free (seriously, as hard as it is to believe, I'm not kidding about this). Everything is silky smooth, including pinch to zoom and scrolling through lots of icons and webpages. Can't imagine the speed boost in 2.2, but I suspect it will only be noticeable when watching flash vids or something.
