Samsung's American Galaxy S phones pose for family portrait

Samsung's US team held a swanky event in NYC this evening to launch all four of its new US-spec Galaxy S phones in style. If you haven't been brought up to speed on Samsung's stateside Android invasion, the Captivate is headed to AT&T, the Fascinate to Verizon, the Epic 4G to Sprint and the Vibrant to T-Mobile. Each of the phones have 4-inch Super AMOLED screens, 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 CPUs, and cams that can capture 720p video. We've already got detailed hands on impressions of the Captivate and Epic 4G, but stay tuned for Fascinate and Vibrant previews tonight. I still think Samsung phones are just a generation behind on design. It looks good, but it looks likes last years phones. I like the HTC, Moto, and Apple designs much more. The more Matte with glossy screens.

Nexus One and Droid X i think look the best.

Well, to me the freaking at&t one looks just like the sony x10..

And here's a couple of questions:

I see that AT&T navigator is on the fkn home screen, so is google Navigation still available? If so, then why would AT&T be stupid enough to even bother installing this?

Also Can you totally remove that and yellow pages?

AT&T really pisses me off with every Android they touch. They just don't get it..

@elijahblake Actually Sprint does the same exact thing. They have Sprint navigation on my Moment, granted it originally game with Android 1.5 without Google Navigation, but with the 2.1 release and Google Navigation they still baked it in, and it's stuck unless I root my phone. I hate it when the carriers lock software onto the phone. Give me back my phone.

agreed. the icon design and the four icon grouping at the bottom of the screen are just way too iphone for me. i far prefer stock android and sense. damn touchwiz takes a lot off the attractiveness away from this phone for me at least

I'll consider WiMax 4G until LTE exists in the marketplace. Right now it's the fastest you can get, so it doesn't matter what you call it.

We'll roll the dice again when LTE is exists in the marketplace.

When did pixel density all of a sudden become relevant? Didn't Apple with their crappy pixel count in iPhone 3G and 3GS claim that such technical details didn't matter and all it mattered was whether it looked good enough. I don't see any different in terms of pixel density b/w the Retina Display and any other normal AMOLED display available today - and I dont think most users use a microscope to peer at their screen either.

I have seen both in person. Wait to judge until you see them side by side. Heck my droid doesn't even look that bad compared to the iphone 4. I would say the best thing iphone4 has on any other screen is brightness. Pixel Density above 800x480 on a phone only makes minimal difference.

@eclsnowman yeah and that 800x480 is just because its on most Android phones eh? the 480x320 was perfectly fine before the 800x480 and 240x320 before that and so on, you cant stop the progress and you cant deny its better to have more ppi

@Formul So there's no limit huh. 600 dpi is great though you can't see any difference right. The fact is that everyone else got to the dpi threshold and then started working in screen size to accommodate media. Apple came late to the party and tried to smooth it over with marketing. They simply took the wrong route and the market is just moving to fast for them. Just face it. The iPhone is no longer top dog.

I will admit its easier (aka realistically possible) to read small text (non-zoomed) sites on iPhone 4... but.. I wouldn't do that.. double-tap is my friend.. and so is froyo it's so fast..

I hope Samsung can throw out a Timeline for how fast they're going to get 2.2 on this thing, either that or I can put a cooked ROM on it..

nice designs, although im not crazy about the samsung skin on top of android.

an odd thing to like maybe, but i very much like the design of the BACK of the captivate. what looks like rubber on the top and bottom which would help with drops, and a carbon fiber-esque backing with "galaxy S" inscribed in white. looks slick

I'm a droid owner and honestly the default android skin just sucks and ive been using different home replacement apps and its like I have an entirely new phone. This touchwiz interface is no different.

The lack of the Front Facing Camera on the Vibrant made it a no sale for me. The lack of Flash on the Camera already had me hesitant. I am a fan of the Hummingbird SoC and Super AMOLED screen but I am going to roll with the Dell Streak if it is AWS this month or wait until "project Emerald" if there is no Dell Streak this month.

I was hesitant as well about the front-facing camera.. But I'm not leaving T-Mo anytime soon. And who the F am I going to vid call with? NO ONE... that's who. I'm sure there's people that it would be beneficial for that travel quite a bit, but i'm not that market.

I live across country from my parents whom I just bought an EVO 4G with a front facing camera. They don't come out my way that often. I currently use a Nexus One and without a Front Facing Camera it is a nominal upgrade and not worth a new phone. I use the flash for taking pictures of receipts for my expenses.

If I was still using my G1 I would consider the Galaxy. However the Streak with its 5 in screen and FFC has my eye particular since it will be unlocked.

I agree with you though I will not be leaving T-mobile for a phone. If Dell doesn't have the Streak ready for T-mo before the next hot phone from HTC on T-mo I won't get the streak..

@iamcriss You mean rectangular? I don't think Apple has a patent on the rectangle. At least these phones have a couple buttons along the bottom to make navigation easier
