Samsung's US team held a swanky event in NYC this evening to launch all four of its new US-spec
Galaxy S phones in style. If you haven't been brought up to speed on Samsung's stateside Android invasion, the
Captivate is headed to AT&T, the
Fascinate to Verizon, the
Epic 4G to Sprint and the
Vibrant to T-Mobile. Each of the phones have 4-inch Super AMOLED screens, 1GHz Hummingbird Cortex A8 CPUs, and cams that can capture 720p video. We've already got detailed hands on impressions of the
Captivate and
Epic 4G, but stay tuned for
Fascinate and Vibrant previews tonight. In the meantime, check out the family all together in the pictures in the gallery below.
I am feeling very Vibrant at the moment!
what's the release date for these again?
I can feel the Epicness. :)
epic 4g or captivate for me. I can't wait!!
Samsung: Fancy new name, same old boring products.
Do all 4 have front facing cameras??
@Ucbigmike20 No. Only the Epic 4G and the generic Galaxy S.
The Captivate has a gyroscope which is awesome: http://briefmobile.com/samsung-att-captivate -- and I like the new Media Hub idea... you'll be able to buy all the movies/tv content you want on all the Galaxy S devices. Overall, the Galaxy S is going to be a great Android addition because: Android 2.2 update guaranteed PLUS a phone for each carrier. Development should be really good on these devices. Lots of custom ROMs.
@kpenning
Agreed. I think all have the gyroscope. This phone is making me drool. It has the most powerful GPU to take advantage of this magnificent screen.
The captivate looks like the one I would most like to buy, while the epic looks like the one I would least likely choose. Yet that goes completely opposite of which carriers I would go with.
Collect them all!
Dumb US consumers need 1 version per carrier. Why can't you work like the rest of the world that uses the Galaxy S?
I wonder how much EXTRA these phones cost to produce due to their exclusivity. $$$ from carriers flow to Samsung. As a result this is more money that could've gone to improving networks (ahem AT&T).
ofcourse at&t gets the ugly one
@iName
Its the ugliest carrier. ;)
I kinda like SAMSUNG's idea even though I don't like their phones munch on AT&T even the CAPTIVATE. At least their doing like HTC is launching all their phones on each carrier. But I still dislike the Hardware with AT&T no front face camera. And does anyone here knows or do you know Engadget knows why SAMSUNG didn't put a flash with their phone?
@Inspector Gadget80
If the Captivate had an LED flash, it would be a done deal for me. Outstanding size, features, fantastic display, we're already on AT&T (several home/business products rolled into a pretty stout discount).
However, I want a device that can really do multi-duty, including a mid-level P&S camera, but without a flash, it's semi-worthless in many situations.
I'd even trade the front camera for a flash.
@DT There is no front facing camera
Oh BTW, has there been any indication as to WHEN these phones might hit??
Only the EPIC 4G has a front facing camera, right? And none of them have flash? Ugh. As much as I hate to admit it, I'm leaning towards iPhone 4 right now. I will just hate myself for padding Uncle Steve's wallet after his deplorable response to all of the phone problems. Why have you failed me, Samsung!!!
@deadpoolLA
Yep no front-facing camera on Fascinate: http://briefmobile.com/samsung-verizon-fascinate
or vibrant or captivate. But epic 4g has one!
@kpenning
I'd love the EPIC without the slide out keyboard. The super slim profile is sweet. Crap. Now I have to listen my to my buddy's iPhone gloating. Without flash and front camera, I have no ammunition to fight back!
I guess I can get the unlocked, international verison (at least that has a front facing camera).
@deadpoolLA I wish they would come out and *$%(% explain why they couldn't put a flash on the camera...
So Sprint gets the 'Epic 4G' with front cam, LED flash on back and... a REAL keyboard...
Has anyone heard of any plans for Samsung to release a GSM version of this phone model (Galaxy S Pro)?
Any info would be great in helping me make a choice : )
The "epic" name is so corny.
The Hummingbird CPU made me lol because of The Onion video of the fictional MacBook Wheel with the Hummingbird Battery.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnLbv6QYcA
The keyboard alone is worth me dumping my current phone, I will do my research on the Epic. But I am almost sold considering I wished the Evo had a keyboard.
WHy different names...Just call it Galaxy V.A.S.T.
Is that an LED notification light i see on the upper right of Sprint's Epic?!?! Its in a couple other pictures of the epic on the web as well
:)
Why does the AT&T captivat have to be the ugliest?
To those who thing Sprint's WiMax is faster than T-Mobiles HSPA+....Your dead wrong. http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=376&p=2707
The first thing I thought of was Iron Man 2. One for the army, the navy, the marines...
(Honestly not a bias/fanboy comment in any way)
The Captivate is not the only one with a Gyroscope. They all have them. Watch the Samsung commercials on there website and you will soon find out that your Captivate don't have anything special.
These phones don't need camera flashes. They have the best aperture put on a camera phone yet. There is images posted somewhere on XDA's forums showing these cameras in action in a pitch black room.
Am I the only one who finds that there being for different versions of this phone ridiculous? Clearly Samsung wants to unify the versions as one brand under the "a Galaxy S phone" marketing. But with four different names and looks, most people aren't going to make the connection that these are the same phones, and so the brand will be fragmented and won't be very recognizable. Why is it that handset makers let themselves get pushed around by the carriers like this? Why can't they be more like Apple and insist on doing things their way, using their logos and designs, rather than having the carriers dictate things?
Epic FTW!
Pretty lame that T-mobile and AT&T's versions don't even have LED flash for the camera.
And Sprint seems to have done the best job at differentiating themselves from the rest of the pack by including a keyboard and front facing camera.
How do they dream up these names?
"My phone is so CAPTIVATE-ing"
"My phone is so FASCINATE-ing"
"My phone is so EPIC"
"My phone is so VIBRANT"
4 different names on all carriers? Way to confuse your customer Samsung. Next they'll have nvidia/ati name their phones
THIS is how all handsets should be.... available for ALL carriers...
@lcw
These aren't all the same phone. Similar, yes, but NOT the same.
AT&T, you will forever suck until you stop changing the designs of some of the phones you offer. Start worrying about how your service separates you from the pack rather than how a phone looks. If I wanted something that looked like an X10/Pure/Nokia X6 I'd buy one of them. I do have to wonder if they're worried about people confusing this with the iPhone, which is why they had it changed...
T-Mobile, you're cool because you gave your customers the same design the rest of the world gets minus the four capacitive buttons now.
Wish they were all the same as the true Galaxy S, but until some people at the top get pushed out, that's not going to happen.
kinda wish the T-M galaxy S has a qwerty keyboard....Why only Sprint??
HEY..... why didn't they include iPhone4 in the picture??? :O Same 5mp camera, VGA front facing camera, gyro/accelerometer, 16gig Nand Flash, 512mg ram, A8 Cortex SoC (Samsung/Intrinsity), Arm Neon Media SoC, SGX540 GPU (90million Tri/p/sec), Broadcom BCM4329 Multi radio (w/o attenuating antenna), etc. Only thing different is the case and Rectal Screen vs Super Amoled in Galaxy!
So... I guess Samsung didn't want to claim Apple's version of the Galaxy (they make all the parts for) even though it should be called Samsung iPhone 4 for Apple!!! ^_^ ....new the most Different iGalaxy iPhone 4 family outcast!!!
HEY GUYS WHICH ONE of those samsung versions of Galaxy S can work with a SIM-card from Europe? (portugal to be more precisely) without counting on Sprint... I like the Captivate a LOT more preetier than the original Galaxy S
Thank you guys
Best regards
Where's the iGalaxy iPhone4 model? :O .... it has all the same parts, but less features! :D .....why isn't it included in the family picture? Is it an OUTCAST? ....just because of iLemon antenna & Rectal Screen? o.O
Samsung this year will make money not only off every Samsung Phone and Tape Slate PC, but every iPhone sold too (parts). Samsung phones will have the widest distribution in the World. Over 25 models, 100 wireless carriers in 120 countries and unlike Apple (fabless & factory-less).... Samsung makes over 50% of iPhone's parts in cost, along with sharing over 70% of the same parts that goes into making iphone4.
So if they are making money on all iPhones sold, along with their own Phones and parts, doesn't that make them more powerful than Apple? Actually with Galaxy S going to Verizon as well as their own version, that makes 5 Galaxy phones alone with 3 models of their Galaxy Tape Slates coming this year to America, that's 8 Galaxies and don't forget their own HDTV's and already being the largest screen fabrication supplier and memory maker in the World!
By comparison, all Apple is....? Is a soft assets company and soft assets can disappear overnight. Unlike the concrete assets you can hold in your hand with Samsung! ....and they can never have Apple biting or suing the HAND that FEEDS THEM! ...can THEY? ....so whether you like Galaxy phones/slates/HDTVs or memory, doesn't really matter when the money you put in their pockets is all GREEN GOLD! ;-)
Enough with the whining about Touchwiz already, it's android you fools you can make it look any way you want.
