Verizon iPhone in January, claims Bloomberg
Stop us if you've heard this one before: Bloomberg says Verizon will get the iPhone... sometime in January. Yep, it's another fuzzy rumor sourced from "two people familiar with the plans," and while we really do believe Big Red will eventually get the iPhone in our lifetimes, at this point we're beyond cynical about pieces like this -- chatter about a Verizon iPhone now regularly reaches deafening levels before crashing down in yet another cloud of AT&T-exclusive dust. However, if you must insist on living this impossible dream, Bloomy's latest rumor does at least line up with the piece from the Wall Street Journal in March claiming that CDMA iPhone would begin production in September, giving Apple plenty of time to ramp up for a January launch.
Of course, we have to wonder if it's the smartest move to announce the hotly-anticipated Verizon iPhone right after the holiday buying season, and we can't imagine all those iPhone 4 buyers who were just enticed into signing new two-year AT&T contracts are going to be happy to discover they could have waited and escaped the Blue, but we'll have to wait and see -- Apple just told us that they "don't comment on rumors and speculation" when we pinged them and asked for comment. Fingers crossed, we suppose.

Screw apple and the antenna they rode in on. I don't want the damn jesus phone on verizon! I don't want the iphone crowd hogging bandwidth. My BB is a bandwidth miser, due to RIM's intelligent management of data transmissions. Apple would do well to use the same technology for reducing the amount of data sent/received by their phones.
Verizon + Apple ftw
BFD. Android is just as good.
This would make the iPhone truly one of the greatest smartphones, if it wasn't crippled by AT&T's horrible service
@buzski Crippled What? Verizon 3g is not as fast as ATT..Verizon is a 2G network.
@anotherworld
Verizon's LTE network will surpass AT&T until 2012
I've been waiting forever. Forever. It's not happening. After a while I just gave up and bought a Droid. The iPhone is not coming to Verizon. At least not for a while. I won't believe anything about this subject until it is announced by Apple or Verizon. Period.
Here's my dilemma, if the iPhone came to Verizon, what's the point of the Droid series? The reason why people on Verizon want a Droid phone is because it's an alternative of an iPhone. Almost everyone would turn in their phones and get an iPhone, and (suppose) have the best coverage. Also AT&T will be destroyed almost immediately.
P.S. Verizon pumped a lot of money on the Droid series as well so I don't believe the iPhone will be on Verizon THIS year
@Gillz123
Why is that a dilemma? The answer is simple...CHOICE!
@HighestRanked2
Nice try. There is more out there than iPhone.
Why is this good?! So Apple can control and already good carrier with threats? So Apple can inundate Verizon stores with iPhone accessories? So that Apple fanboys can flock over to our awesome network and slow us down?
SCREW THAT NOISE.
I call shenanigans
People are so excited about the iphone going to Verizon but lets all take some time and thing about it. Let's all pull out our smartest phones on Verizon's network make a call then try to access the internet. DATS RIGHT IT WONT HAPPEN. CDMA cannot handle both. Who wants a iphone that you cant TRULY multitask on now thet OS4 has come out. People we are all limiting ourselves. The only plus, THE ONLY PLUS, is verizon's network; and if you are a tru apple, phone, tech, or anything freak you have alrerady switched to att for the iphone sometime between the IPHONE, IPHONE3G, IPHONE3GS or now for the IPHON4....we want to vote against this. I know Apple is all about they money but lets remember that people that really understand verizon network is great but capabilities are bullshit....
AND DATS REAL
I don't think its going to happen when just about a week ago they did the over the air shit and said they weren't getwing the iPhone and was focusing on the higher end android phones
@hated one but att data plans are not unlimited so why would you get a iPhone if you can't use the internet whenever you want cause you have a limit Verizon UNLIMITED
Yeah I'm sure it'll also come with Duke Nukem' Forever preloaded on it too...
don't forget to buy your $30 rubber band so you can actually make calls
hahahahaha-magical
if the iphone does go on verizon, I'm switching while theres still unlimited data
I really hope not. Look at what partnering with Apple has done to AT&T's android lineup; not to mention their lack of prospective WP7 devices. The iphone is great and all, but Apple's practice of shadily eliminating any competitive products sucks. I hope they stay exclusive to AT&T.
@hated one
Why can trolls never speak proper english?
i switched from verizon to at&t for the iphone 4 and my at&t service is great in my area!!!!! five bars everywhere i go!!!!! and the internets so much faster then when i had the droid eris on verizon and i love the simutoanous data and voice!
Maybe the exclusivity period only pertains to a 3G/EDGE wireless band... I haven't read the contract so I wouldn't know...

At some point, these rumors need to stop being reported. It is starting to get annoying.
It makes sense that it would come to verizon. Think about it. Att offered everyone with contracts expiring this year and even some early next year a free upgrade discount. Why would they do that? To encourage demand? No, because iPhone demand is already astonishingly high. They seemingly did it out of "customer care" which is bs. Its because the iPhone must be moving to verizon, thus the ppl who renewed their contracts got screwed by AT&Ts "gift". If I'm wrong you iPhone 4 owners win. But I'm not.
@cracked17 They have done that every year a new iPhone was released, just maybe not to as many customers this year.
Every contract is full of clauses. If Apple feels it is being hurt by its contact with at&t, it'll be over in a heartbeat.
I don't think Apple is going to stick with anyone besides At&t, and I'm happy about that.
@hated one and Verizon still has more customers that att. Why is that and att is the one with the iPhone?
I highly doubt this rumor is true. Not until Verizon has LTE. So unless they are geting LTE in January I doubt it.
Never gonna happen. For reason #1 Verizon has a ranking system for all the handsets they sell on their site, not Apple's flavor of koolaid you could say.
hey fanbois, have a good look at yourself ;)

Maybe I missed something, but amongst the discussion of GSM vs CDMA, LTE, etc, people are overlooking some major, more basic areas where Apple and VZW don't see eye-to-eye:
1. Ap Revenue. Apple makes billions on the Ap-Store and I don't know if they share that revenue with carriers?
VZW has a strangle-hold on their users with "GetItNow". VZW users are not allowed to add faux-aps (e.g. vzw navigator), ringtones, wallpapers, etc, unless they're purchased from VZW through GetItNow. I don't think VZW will give-up all that revenue. (I know Droid & Incredible users will say they're free from GetItNow, but that's a small fraction of VZW's user-base).
2. Ever see a phone on VZW without the VZW logo prominently on the face? Ever see an Apple product with someone else's logo prominently on the face. I think Gruber brought this up(?) but I could see both companies refusing to budge on something as minor as logo placement.
I wouldn't be surprised if points like these were what caused Apple and VZW not to do a deal when the original iPhone came out.
What do you guys think?
Once Verizon get's it's hands on the iPhone, At&t can say bye-bye.
Woke up to local FOX affiliate TV station in San Francisco reporting it this morning as fact. The statement made it sound like Verizon made the announcement! Sheesh
Anything is possible but prior to Verizon (holding it's nose) and making nice with Google in order to launch competing Android devices, it was impossible to imagine an Apple - Verizon partnership. Oil and water. Now established in mobile space, Apple will continue to operate from a position of strength. Verizon will need to make concessions and that will be a win for consumers...
These rumors are getting old and everytime they release one apple stock goes up....its all a hoax with the release of the droid x coming im not missing a verizon iphone launch at all....
Im a verizon customer...they can keep their phone for all i care. Im still an Android user and probably always will be unless something drastic happens. FLOCK apple!!!
Nilay Patel, it would appear that someone is a fan of your writing style. check out Daniel Indiviglio's article in The Atlantic on the same story. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2010/06/a-verizon-iphone-in-january/58925/
I just think some of the lines are very similar between the two articles. Coincidence? I think not.
Heres the big issues.
1) Android is making inroads big time on apple, and it is likely only to continue to get worse. Android is cheaper, can be developed faster, and leaves more room for growth.
2) Service on AT&T is better than it was a year ago, but still leaves much to be desired.
3) Apple wants more users (duh) and staying with just AT&T limits that. (in the US)
If you put all of those together you will see that it only makes logical sense for Apple to give the phone to another carrier. Now which carrier?
Sprint - Okay they would offer a low price, and gain many customers, but would most likely suffer from network issues like AT&T. Also their 4G network is not supported in mass anywhere else.
T-mobile - Would offer a low price, but like sprint, limited 3G coverage, and would most likely suffer network issues also.
That leaves Verizon, and IMO here is why Verizon would be the pick. largest network by far in the US with the most capacity for growth. Also their 4G network choice is also the choice of the world, and Verizon has the entire US waiting for building penetrating 700 mhz LTE coverage.
If I had to place bets I would bet that Verizon is going to get a hybrid CDMA/LTE device with VOIP over EVDO REV A, allowing talk and web together. As for timeframe? I I would bet christmas time 2010, or early 2011.
iPHONE ON VERIZON WILL BE UNRELIABLE
HERE IS WHY
The verizon iPhone will run on the new LTE 4G network
This phone will not be compatable with the older CDMA network.
What does this mean?
No telephone network is 100% reliable, when not if Verizons new LTE 4G network goes down your iPhone 4 wont be able to drop down to the CDMA network as they are not compatible.
WHICH MEANS NO SERVICE WHATSOEVER
With ATT@T when your 3G network drops of your phone drops down to the old 2G network.
MEANING YOU ALWAYS HAVE A CONNECTION
HOW DO I KNOW THIS?
In New Zealand we have two major telephone networks.
Vodafone and Telecom
Vodafone has a 2G and 3G network ie GSM
Telecom has a CDMA and a 3G network called XT
The XT network was promoted heavily by Richard Hammond from Top Gear.
When Telecoms 3G network turns of as it often does all GSM phones ie: 3G phones (iPhone) go of until the network comes back on.
Vodafone does not have this problem as they have a backup ie: the 2G GSM network.
To sum up you might think an iPhone is bad on ATT&T but you will be pulling your hair out on Verizon LTE 4G.

I think everyone keeps talking about a Verizon iPhone because they want the iPhone 4 on Verizon. Maybe they believe that constantly creating rumors (yes thats what they are) that it may become a reality.
If you want IRREFUTABLE PROOF that the iPhone will NOT be coming to Verizon anytime soon check out the article called "Why Verizon wont see the iPhone anytime soon" at http://getyourgadgetsgoing.com/
hmm, there are news that read "Apple is field testing the Verizon iPhone and the iPad 2?"
I believe Verizon getting an Iphone would be great for all the users who are looking forward to it.
You know iPhone sells so better because it’s the only smartphone that is as powerful as a Mac and as easy to use as an iPod. Period. I like iPhone 4, it's so fatastic and got top 4 tempting features, HD Video Recording and lovely pictures, what's more, the Retina display, and the remarkable 960x640 resolution screen make my movie watching experience unbelievably sharp and crisp in the help of iFunia iPhone video converter.
aha, I love Verizon and I love iPhone 4’s = One Big Love for this marriage to happy. Love, love, love, love.
