Did Nokia just confirm a MeeGo tablet?
We've heard the rumors, hell, we've even seen Intel reference designs (pictured) running the MeeGo OS. But now we seem to have confirmation that a proper MeeGo tablet built by Nokia is on the way. Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia's newly crowned chief of Mobile Solutions, said the following in an interview captured by the Wall Street Journal:
Remember, Nokia already makes a netbook and the smartphone qualifier would seem to remove any speculation that Anssi is referring to its Internet Tablet class of Maemo devices. So maybe, just maybe that rumored 7- or 9-inch Nokia tablet is real. Did we say maybe?Due to the spread of cloud computing and new advances in electronics and network technology, mobile devices will increasingly move beyond smartphones to include other computer-like gadgets such as tablets, and the MeeGo platform will be an important asset for Nokia.

This tablet looks amazing!
@Mike Vick
Yeah!
I swear there is a smaller version that is made by some fruit company though...
@sparky25890 Nokia has a long tablet history. Google for teh Nokia 770, N800 and N810. They are samller than the fruit company tablets and run Maemo, MeeGo's daddy.
@Mike Vick
Ooooo, do I see a webcam?
Hey, its better for the industry.. Trust in Nokia, they make swell devices! The only thing that matters is cost go Nokia!
The more the merrier.
@aubreyq
I have faith in Nokia, I really do.
I really didn't take anything that sounded immediate out of that statement.
@Mike Vick
trust in nokia?
What a joke. They haven't come out with anything impressive in years. While MeeGo is interesting I honestly don't think it has the wherewithal to produce anything truly revolutionary.
I can't wait to get my hands on MeeGo!
If it will run existing Linux applications I am sold. Nokia shall remember to add to key components: VGA out to connect to a projector for presentation and a Pixel Qi display. If it will happen, I will preorder one as as it will be possible.
@stoffer, VGA is so '90s, it's way too thick to be implemented in a slick design requirements of today. But there will most certainly be a HDMI port. And a couple of USB ports as well.
As for Linux applications, if it's based on Moorestown, it will run every single one of them as in that case MeeGo is essentially just another GNU/Linux desktop distribution. If it's something ARM-based, provided that you have the source and the time to adjust it to the new platform, sure. N900 is the clear example of that.
@incognito yea, VGA is big, but it is the most common interface for projectors. For someone like me, who would love a table for presentations lack of a VGA compatible output will be a deal breaker. I do not need to carry a T400 for a presentation or a lecture.
@stoffer I mean a tablet not a table.
@stoffer
HDMI is compatible with the new generation of projectors.
Vga is big and not HD...
Vga is dead dude : just accept it.
As for MeeGo running desktop linux apps, it's just a question of having the right librairies and recompiling for the ARM architecture = shouldn't be a big deal.
Maemo runs so many of them from Midgnight commander to leafpad to Quake 3...
@Flix C "Vga is dead dude : just accept it." - I think that people who run conference centers would strongly disagree with you. There are bazillions of projectors deployed in conference rooms, conference halls and lecture halls round the world, that use VGA input. Good luck going against that. VGA is a good old proven technology. Many conference rooms and lecture halls have still overhead projectors for transparencies. Knowing that I give VGA some 15 years of extra life.
@stoffer
Well still VGA-is pretty dead to the kind of users nokia are aming for.
But with any luck, you could pick up an external GPU, that comes with DVI compatible with analogue outs. You just need the drivers for MeeGo.
There are cheap ones. the resolution is bad, and some only mirrors the display viewed on the device...but that fits your request.
If I ever wanted a tablet, it would very likely run something like MeeGo. Maybe I would buy one just out of curiosity, though I still haven't found a comfortable way of using one for long.
Still, I think we should remember that Nokia isn't calling devices like N900 smartphones anymore. They are make a clear distinction to call them mobile computers (to which I agree).
@TP for my Bunghole '
Everyone makes them, but there's a few if none I expect this much.
There was a leak (with some specs) about 2-3 weeks ago already, the internal project codename was said to be "lankku" (Finnish language and means "plank", timber). It was supposed to be ready 2011, but someone suggested that it might be ready a little earlier.
MeeGo seems a promising OS for many reasons, Qt not being smallest.
NOKIA,無視
@Orion
Nokia = 王
Ignoring the biggest player in the room isn't all that smart.
@Rev Нокиа - win :D
@Rev
Ahah that's funny.
Could be funnier if I read chinese though...
@Flix C
Disregard that, Ubiquity in just awesome.
@Flix C If you can read Chinese 王 means Wang (surname) or King/Ruler, 皇 is a better word as it means Ruler/Royal/Imperial/Superior.
@BrookLynnsFinest
Wow! You have a new record how fast a comment can be downranked!
lol, I can imagine Nokia thinking they're Big Buck Bunny and Apple's that evil ass chipmunk thing in the picture... how ambitious
@skyblaze It's funny how that movie is the poster child for mobile video playback.
@BrookLynnsFinest
"uhhh.... have you seen the N900?"
(cwalter's comment holds so much weight it needed to be repeated)
@huzzlehoff
God you idiots say that all the time...what is this "record"? What's the number?
You guys are pathetic and in denial. Nokia is a sinking ship and is quickly becoming associated with cheap, plastic, and low level.
@BrookLynnsFinest
is a pure fanboy jerk
Will it blend?
@WillItBlend
Gonna need a bigger blender man.
Is it just me or does it look like an iPad?
There are other designs out there Nokia, use them!
@GoodToGo, gee, it has a bezel, and a huge screen... Yeah, clearly an iPad rip-off.
@GoodToGo
tell me, apart from a rectangular shape, with one side almost fully occupied by a screen and a couple of buttons, what other form factors exist for tablets?
@GoodToGo Um, article read fail? The photo is Intel's MeeGo prototype, not Nokia's.
and that's resistive? imagine if that would have been capacitive?
@kororo20 MeeGo was demoed on a resistive multitouch screen. Yes, resistive is more acurate than capacitive and it can do multitouch!
@BrookLynnsFinest
Dude, you have no right to judge whether it's revolutionary or not.
Only I have the right, I'm Revolutionary, and you will respect that.
I say this thing is wonderful.
Competition is loved.
Love or hate Nokia, they have always made fantastic hardware but the software has been their achilles heel (or at least as of late). Maemo was good but (still) lacks that final polish. However if the recent video's of MeeGo (at least tablet/netbook UX) is any indication, they might just have a winner on their hands.
tldr; Nokia makes good hardware. If they get MeeGo polished Ill buy it.
@jsuggs
"Nokia always makes good hardware"
I am not so sure...almost all of Nokia's recent phones have faced flak because of poor hardware. Low RAM, slow processors, all these are hardware issues. Give me better hardware, and even S60v5 will be just dandy for me
nokia ... hmmm ... they could pull it off as long as they don't over price it .... $400 is the price to beat ... its gotta be less than iCrap
@darthgault
anything between $400 and $600, and we have a winner.
i know i am stating a wide price range, but with a lack of any worthwhile competitors in the tablet space outside the US, this will sell like hot potatoes.
@boxieblue
*hot cakes....
darn, trust me to forget that no one sells hot potatoes
@BrookLynnsFinest
Rolling on a chair laughing
@TP for my Bunghole
yes, but with Nokia making one, i am sure it will outsell the iPad outside of US, esp in Asian countries. I know i would want one. Apple will continue to keep its loyal fan base in the US. :)
Oh please yes
whats wrong with having more tablets. i like tablets.
more is better i want to have a choice.
i want courier, Microsoft make it
