Steve Jobs emails 'are real' claims Boy Genius Report, says Apple PR lied to press
Earlier this week we reported on a story that had been doing the rounds -- another Steve Jobs email thread with an irate customer. Like many other stories about Jobs' emails to customers, this yarn centered around a user disappointed with his iPhone 4's service, and Steve's flippant responses. The first time we saw the story crop up, we were suspicious of its validity (and frankly, newsworthiness), and we became even more suspicious after AppleInsider ran an article claiming that the source of the supposed emails had been shopping the tale for cash (Engadget was not contacted by the source). We did eventually cover the story, but only after Apple itself responded to the tale, claiming -- first to Fortune and then to us -- that the emails were false, and the exchange had not happened. That struck us as particularly newsworthy, because in all our years of reporting on Steve Jobs' wild personal emails (of which there are many, many examples), we'd never heard Apple refute that the emails were coming from him.
Now, Boy Genius Report (where the original story appeared) has fired back, emphatically claiming that the emails are real, and that the proof is in the original message headers which the site has been given access to by the source. BGR goes one step further as well, and essentially accuses Apple PR of spinning this story to news outlets to suit its needs. And let's not mince words -- the claim is that Apple PR is lying to the press. The proof which BGR offers is no more or less convincing to us than the site's previous post on the subject; email headers and timestamps can be faked. Still, it is notable that Boy Genius is pushing back on this story, and we certainly don't believe the blog would knowingly publish a false email thread. As TechCrunch points out in its take on the matter, PR reps often give vague, sugarcoated, or misleading information to news sites, but there has never been a time when Apple's PR has outright lied to major publications (that we know of). That would be a mess of epic proportions, and we can't really fathom why they would go to the trouble. The company has obviously let stuff like this slide for years -- this seems like an odd time (and a relatively minor story) to get up in arms about it. We've reached out to Apple for further statement on this, and will report back as soon as we hear something. In the meantime, take a look at the source link and see what BGR has to say on the matter.

who should we believe?
@Maxipad
Believe the billion dollar that wants your money!
/s
eh...in that email exchange, they both were acting like dbags. I thought that jjbuford guy was the bigger one tho.
@Aaquibn ..that won't be affected mentionable by this or believe a blog that needs the clicks to earn money?
@Dusse
Touche. Now that I think about it, Apple does have a lot more to lose by lieing than BGR does.
This is funny if it were any other company I bet you would ask for the ceo's head. But since apple is a cult and steve jobs is your GOD he can do no wrong.
@Maxipad Boy Genius Report VS Apple's PR team... That's pretty easy, I never believe PR-crap anyway.
@Maxipad
A company who won't accept the iPhone 4 might have a problem or a blog that can easily show fake e-mail headers to make Apple look like the bad guy? I believe in Microsoft.
@Maxipad I tend to believe BGR. They are a pretty good site that doesn't seem to me like a place where they'd follow up on this without 100% proof. Yeah things can be faked, but at the very least I think BGR believes its real.
Not to mention Gizmodo has a source that says the headers are at least accurate. So we know that the headers if they are faked, are definitely from Apple, maybe not this particular email but a previous one.
That + the fact Apple has been on a huge PR spree lately where they have lied (or mislead) to people i'm siding with BGR.
@Maxipad
wow Microsoft looks like a saint now. And why isnt the EU or the US Anti-trust dept filing cases against Apple now. MS had to face a shit load of lawsuits just for including IE as the default browser which Mac OS does anyway.
@Maxipad
Mm mm MMMMMM!!! Hope y'all got your popcorn.. this shyt gonna be EPIC!!
Bwahahahaha!! The Big Fruit is imploding! Apple says their phone has the best antenna ever -- Not. They say all phones have some attentuation when held, but theirs doesnt exhibit that -- Not. AT&Ts service has been the cause of network issues for users with iPhones -- Not (their implementations suck --ask iPad--, and they've been doctoring their bars display for Years).
+ They have posted jobs for antenna engineers (Why, when you have had the "best" on staff that came up with that "bright" new antenna design??)
I rest my case.
**software fix**
if (user touches the antenna) {
//ignore the touch
//do not change bars in the signal
} else {
//shows bars based on ATTs network
//work as usual
}
@ssguy There are a few reasons why Apple haven't got an anti-trust/anti-competition lawsuit:
1. The reality distortion field also works on judges and governments
2. Android is doing well
3. Safari is not doing well
4. Microsoft are selling more Windows licenses than Apple are selling Mac OS X licenses.
5. Mac hardware is overpriced and the reality distortion field is damaged in that area.
6. HP are based a quarter of a mile from Facebook.
@Dellibedaboss
I guess we are witnessing the beginning of the end.
Oh Apple.... you've gone from a blossom... to a ripe juicy piece for fruit... to a bad Apple =/ Shame on you!....
@Maxipad
One way to know which one is lying is what happens next.
If the PR team confiscate Jobs phone and email account its apple lying. If Jobs keeps sending his one liners, BGR, or their source could be lying.
@Maxipad I believe apple, I think someone started a fake email chain, it would be pretty weird if a guy sent a complaint to a non apple email? So if there's any doubt that it's real, then the guy probably didn't even send it to apple, apple would know if it was sent to them
@Maxipad
Hmmmm.... I'm getting a Dell
@Dellibedaboss
Take your drama, set it to music and put it on Broadway!
I just got the iphone 4 and I have no freaking problems. So Apple has a small design flaw. Get a bumper cause there isn't any iphone user walking around with their baby unprotected. If there are any they are stupid.
The screen is amazing!!!! The color saturation is deep deep deep. And the only phone calls that drop,in my encounter, are the folks with Metro PCS. Sorry but true.
@Plazmic Flame
Dell sold computers it knew were faulty. Play it safe. But the parts from Newegg and build your computer yourself.
@TitanT30 I believe in Google. As much as I love MS, even they lie from time to time, but Google is pure.
@TitanT30 I
@pspitts
And congratulations to you, my friend. But I have seen and heard about these issues firsthand... and have seen the numerous videos clearly showing this "touch sides/strip = lose reception" issue. As I have stated before, not 100% of the users of a particular product will not experience some of the reported issues that may pop up. I have the EVO (getting the white iPhone as well when that is released -- and fixed; job payin, why not?) and have not had the many reported issues. As Apple has said themselves, its mainly the users in low-reception area -- and as we ALL know, AT&T's coverage is BAD, nationally. AT&T sucks in my area, so that is why I am weary about this issue.
Please do not use Your experience as the basis of all of the other owners. I know what I saw and read, and everyone here can agree -- Engadget has reported Most of this since it broke. WHY should any consumer have to spend money to correct a highly touted design flaw -- Especially those who paid Full price! If you feel that way, fine. But your a figgin idiot in doin so, and its not even a full case for $30!!!! GTFOH! Overpriced rubberband. And even with those, there are some consumers that are STILL having a problem!
C'monnn, I cant believe iSheep are taking this all in and DEFENDING Apple. Reception problems are only the half. Apple is LYING, and continue to lie, and WHY CAN YOU ALL NOT SEE THAT?? They have been doctoring their reception bars for generations now! Apple's fraudulent activities have been EXPOSED! Yey, iSheep are still sticking to Jobs' sack like white on rice... smdh.
this is not newsworthy but a sweaty Ballmer screaming developers, developers, developers! is
@Maxipad
If this were proven true, I can Apple's credibility being dented a bit... well at least amongst the technically sane aka non-fanboys.
@Maxipad
Why should we believe anyone? It's completely irrelevant to anything except people's extreme need to create soap opera drama. It's pathetic.
@Maxipad
Boy Genius Report is pretty much the internet source for all Mobile Gadgets (READ: Cell Phones) so I'd be more inclined to believe them than Steve "The Douche" Jobs or Apple's PR department.
@thelolotov
"Google is pure"
LOL That's rich. They look pure until they get caught with their hand in the cookie jar collecting passwords and e-mail "by accident"

In Google's eyes you are a commodity to be sold to advertisers for profit. Google does not care about you as a person. Their mission is to make money first, organize the world's information second (but only because it will make them more money) So don't put them on some kind of pedestal. They are a business, not your friend. To over generalize, don't trust any company, keep em on a short leash, and as soon as they do something stupid be ready to jump ship.
@Dellibedaboss
Bandwagon: The reports of antenna problems with the iPhone 4 are greatly exaggerated. Most of them are professional trolls hired by the competition. Rest assured the iPhone 4 underwent rigorous testing.
Naive: seriously, Steve Jobs has better things to do that write emails to customers. He has an entire department that does so. Don't believe me? Go ahead and send him an email.
WTF: Seriously why are we wasting time on a stupid article. This must be a fucking slow news day.
Also, I am Steve Jobs and I would send you all a free iPhone to prove how great they are.
@Aaquibn
Believe the drunken, raving lunatic who wants your money for an e-mail.
@Odog4ever
Hrmm, any information stolen by a Google car wardriving unsecure Wi-Fi hotspots isn't any sort of security risk sir........................... Whoever connects to an unsecure hotspot doing anything that they don't want others knowing about is a jackass.
@pspitts
Sounds like a fool that needs to justify their purchase if not their god.
I confess...
I sent that.
-sent from my iPhone on verizon
@Maxipad I believe the children are our future.
@Aaquibn
Actually they don't... they'll sell about a million iPhones per week for the next 6 months...
BGR is a laughingstock right now, and people will just stop listening to them after this...... if he can't prove he's being honest
@Maxipad
I Was Right.
@Maxipad We already know what the Apple haters believe. Whatever goes against Apple, True or Not.
@Maxipad
The inflammatory statement "Retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it." is NOT from Steve.
BGR just happens to get the most important part of the story wrong. They get a millions hits off their "mistake" then quietly corrects it with an "edit" statement at the bottom of the article. They should headline another story "Opps, Steve did not say 'Retire, relax...'".
@Maxipad
we'll lets see. Boy Genius is saying it's real, why? Either because it is real and they want to expose Apple. or because they need to protect their rep. They even admit that they are basically a rumor site. Plus those copied headers. Come on, anyone could doctor that info
Apple is saying the messages were fake. They told this to a major news magazine. And then released a letter to the public basically supporting their version. Telling the truth or lying to protect their rep. Consider the outcome when the smoking gun comes out. Well this would make the whole "Steve Jobs is dying" seem like a picnic
So frankly my vote is that Apple is not lying and the messages were not real. ANd that there is no proof of a major design flaw with the antennae.
Now is it BGR or this Jason guy that lied, don't know, don't care.
@coolkams03 No, that's too much work. Only a script is needed, to overwrite the icons for 1,2,3,4 bars with the 5 bars icon.
@zakany
Right right, and when Apple completely ceased in the sales of iMacs with faulty screens, that issue had taken them completely by surprise.
Oh, wait...
@Maxipad
Why should someone with a piece of news information be looked down upon because they want to get paid for it? You, Engadget, and every other news purveyor are shopping your news to us the readers for cash. You are a business arnt you? Your ultimate purpose is to make money and you get paid for your work which is being part of the chain of passing that information to its ultimate destination which is us the readers. So it's ok if you and your owners make money from that information but not the original posessor of it? Is your crap somehow less stinky than his?
You are hypocrites to look down on the plebs just because any of them might dare to think they could make some money from some newsworthy information they are lucky enough to find themselves in possesion of. That's what you 'do'.
@Maxipad
I want to believe.
@Mike Vick You know what. You are so right. I think you need a Nobel peace prize for being the one millionth person who has come up with that clever realization.
Those who can't afford or their parent won't buy them apple products will forever "hate" on those who do as well as the company that makes them.
Innovation. It's inevitable, and someone has to supply it.
Sent from my iPhone 4. :0)
@Maxipad I guess Apple never heard of Toyota..........LOL
@Maxipad
" but there has never been a time when Apple's PR has outright lied to major publications (that we know of). "
Hm .... Engadget having a hard time that Apple's PR could possibly lie? OH NOEZ
@Aaquibn Well you definitely shouldn't believe Apple. They are the ones with the issues and will lie about anything to make it sound right.
@audrywienerdog
Innovation? Is that why all of the innovations released in iOS4 and the iPhone4 have been on the market for over a year now? What exactly is innovative about that?
@yyandrew Steve Jobs might get fired for this.
....of course if BGR is telling the truth
@Dellibedaboss
I'm confused. You feel that way about Apple and yo still want to get the phone??
