Dell Streak's car dock gets a video unboxing, early road test
Given the size of Dell's Streak (it's rocking a 5-inch screen, in case you were wondering), you've probably considered using it as a dedicated routing machine with Google Maps Navigation at the helm. The only problem? Using your arm as the window mount. We heard a few weeks ago that the Streak's official car dock was finally on sale over in the UK, and it looks as if the bugger is finally shipping there, too. The best news? It seems to hold up pretty well to some of Britain's bumpiest roadways -- see for yourself after the break.
See more video at our hub!

Looks like they are flying on the road, not driving, based on the height in that pic!
@dcnoren
It only seems that way because the car is sitting on top of the AT&T data plan bills people will be getting slammed with.
@dcnoren
HAHA .. .must be a monster truck. . . it sure looks like flying. . . :P
looks really funny .. lol . .
@dcnoren It's a narrow little road. Welcome to the UK!
@dcnoren Might be the angle the camera's set at. Or maybe he drives a big car.
@dcnoren
I'm actual at the top of a very, very steep hill in the Yorkshire dales.
(You can glimpse how high I am at the start of the video as I set off)
And the road down adds to the effect, as for the car it's just a normal Renault Megane so It's not a huge car.
That car is really high off the ground!
@rock99rock REDUX As has been mentioned already. Old news, bro.
@dcnoren
Oh man! Your internets must be way faster than mine.
@rock99rock REDUX That's what the HOV lane is for!
@rock99rock REDUX yeah that's what I thought too. What would be a nice demo is actually getting google maps working somewhere like say inside a large city where you have a lot of people using the same tower and you have interference for your GPS. If you can pull that off then I would be impressed.
They didnt even announce the phone yet
@Cainhunpi for america uk has been falling in love for a month or so now
@Cainhunpi
do you live under a rock with Patrick
@Cainhunpi sure they did. It's on O2 in the UK which ofc means forget about using google navigation cause you are not going to have internet when you really need it. Oh and dude just because the US gets iPhone before everyone else doesn't mean that they get everything before everyone else … (plus that doesn't even apply for iPhone anymore)
Where is Richard Lai when you need him? Or does he not own a motocar?
Gee, I hope this Dell doesn't have any capacitors in it.
@gus2000
you ARE joking right? no capacitors in a mobile phone??
@br123
Flux capacitor.
@gus2000
I hate to break it to you, but that mount is made entirely of capacitors!
@ChazClout
I would be scared if a mobile phone could provide gigawatts of power that a flux capacitor needs =P. what if it explodes in my pocket?
5 Inches display? Holy moly, how does all this bulkiness feel in the pocket? I'd love to have it tho.
@allenrotstein yeah I'm not used to having something that small in my pocket. Oh wait - that is not my pocket.
@allenrotstein I dont even notice it. Slides easily into a jeans pocket at the front, can go up and down stairs, sit down without discomfort, the works.
Incredible device btw.
@allenrotstein My Streak fits in every single one of my trouser pockets! It really isn't that big.
"once you've gone 5 inches you ain't gonna go back!"
he sounded way too happy to say that. lol.
@ror
If I'd known it would hit the frontpage of Engadget, I might of added an extra inch *cough*
ugggg ... tired of hearing about phones that aren't available here. this is the one i really want but dell is taking it's time launching it in the states... i bet dell won't be able to keep up with demand in the usa.
@darthgault
I hope so, we can't get 4G over here.
@darthgault
Rumours are the 14th for USA (But take that with a large pinch of salt)
@THJahar Wow I hope so! I've been waiting for this device since...oh... When was the 7-10 inch phone rumor from Dell last year? I just hope that if they go with At&t, there'll be a better contract deal like O2. I hate to have to renew with at&t, but I would love to get it for less than $500.
@EHBHUFF
i need one to have T-mobile 3G bands ... otherwise it's a no go for me
I'll pass on the Streak. Still too big to be a phone. may make a nice navigator but it will probably kill your data plan with.
@Inspector Gadget80
No more that any other phone. 5" screen uses the same data as a 3.5" screen.
Long live the Great British B road, that is pure hoonage.
how difficult is it to time the release of accessories with a device. Dell,HTC,Apple WTF give us some docks when the devices are avail.
Still waiting on my EVO home or car dock HTC.
the streak makes a perfect nav.
Over £50 is completely ridiculous. The cable is over £30, con-tastic.
here is a shattered 5inch screen of our beloved streak.

does anyone know if this is a manufacturing issue (defective glass) or is the gorilla glass not so tough after all?
@azdude That depends how you broke it !
All the inch talk makes me feel better inside.
@Toneglaso
OP here :-)
If anyone says I'm compensating for deficiencies in other areas, they're gonna get a knuckle sandwich :-)
the only things better than a british video review would be a scottish | irish video review.
not sure why everyone's saying the car is high off the ground, looks normal to me, unless i'm the only one who isn't driving a ferrari or lambo
Can someone tell me if you need to have a constant data connection to use google maps or can i just use this as a stand alone gps, no 3g connection needed?
I can't wait for the Streak, well maybe I have to (no $) but when I can get it I will. I want one of the bigger Streaks actually but a 5" will do just fine and it will be on TMO not just AT&T.
it's probably a great product but i'd prefer not to endure more of Dells crappy service.
Aah Skipton - lovely part of the world in God's own country - Yorkshire..
I was at school in Giggleswick which is about 20 miles away.
Oh yes the Dell Streak. Got one and love it. No way I'm EVER going back to a smaller screen. O2's 3G in South London is lousy though, especially compared to Vodafone's.
