Nintendo, Sega controllers and carts find a new home in the RetroN 3 console
We know the hazards that can befall retro gaming enthusiasts -- janky third party consoles and KIRFy handhelds not the least among them -- so it's nice to see someone put some real thought in their hardware. Available in retro-futurist red or sober, serious black, the RetroN 3 gaming system is compatible with your Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and SNES cartridges. And if that weren't enough for you (it seldom is, is it?) you can use a pair of the original controllers from either of those three systems. If that seems too awesome, it also packs its own wireless controllers. Available now for $70.

@MikeUK Funny, I also played with some real old consoles (Sega megadrive 2, snes, nes, philips G7000) and I had more fun with playing those games than I have playing my current PS3 games...
No headache here...
yay. 3 slots to blow in to make it work.
Great but this will have issues with some games due to the chips not being able to be copyed 100% prefect there have been done on the cheap likely to make money from the sales of the console.
I would advise sticking with emu's if you want to be able to play all your fav golden oldies.
Tho I could be wrong guess I'll watch the reviews from others who get one before I get one myself.
no Sega CD slot?
pass, i need me some sewer shark.
So how long till we can get one of these to Ben Heck?
it is very similar to emulation.. Quite moreso than other comments will have you to believe.
The software was not intended to run on ANY other hardware than the destination hardware. Therefore this actually emulation.
The only reason they consider PC/handheld emulation a crime is because the original cartridge is not on hand.
Laymans terms= Hardware that can play the cart/cd is okay.
Hardware than can play the image of cart/cd is okay.
Having the cart/cd image is not okay. !!!Even!!! if you own the original copy of the software.
I hate how they make me feel like I've stolen something I've already paid for. I gave hard worked for cash to these people. Yet they judge me a thief if I have a ROM/CD image.
They need us. We do not need them. The way my girlfriend looks right now highlights that fact.

Shutup and take my money!
It takes "Nintendo, Sega Genesis, and SNES cartridges"!
Wait.. who made the SNES again?
@simbr Well considering people referred to the NES in its time as "Nintendo" as in "Let's go over to your house and play Nintendo"... how old are you again?
I had a SNES, it was the best console in my repertoire next to my PSOne.
No thanks I'd rather mod my wii or 360 to play games I used to play when I was young. I don't have any space on the tv stand and I handed my old systems down to my little brother when the newer systems came out so that he would leave me alone and play my old stuff.
I would get one if I didn't already own almost all major consoles since the late 70s. Haha!
As for how it works, I imagine it will be software emulation which can read the original cartridges, not system in a chip implementations as to my knowledge, the NES is the only complete SOAC console implementation (NOAC - NES On a chip).
Software emulation would be better anyway as SOAC implementations are no where near perfect and fail to work with a large collection of games. The Generation NEX is the only NOAC console I have seen (and own) that actually plays a large collection of nes games correctly.
May I also point out that the bright metallic red is butt-ugly :D
@benanderson There is also a butt-ugly dark gray version
@timw4mail
Its not a true KIRF if it isn't an eyesore! So this one gets a 10/10 :B
Cool. but it's been done before, several times (check eBay)...
this is just a "prettier" version, not much new.
I'd rather see Nintendo 64 added....
(Goldeneye!;)
Wow... these consoles had an orgy after experiementing with some pretty bad Drugs..... but their offspring turned out pretty good cant complain about that.
id rather buy the original consoles
i do play emulators on my laptop and have it on my big tv
but ive looked on ebay and i can get alll 3 consoles for about £40 which inc postage
I just don't get the point of these machines -- $70 will buy you two of the three consoles on Craigslist -- actual consoles, with the real controllers, that more-or-less work every time. These things always have quirks with controls, poor quality sound, graphical glitches, game that won't boot, and the like.
Plus, the original systems look classic and quality, and fit great in a game room:

The problem with these is always lack of svideo or component video output. I would buy one right away... Much easier than busting out the soldering iron (nes, genesis) ... And a real snes does Svideo...
awesome idea, I want one.
