Android 2.2 ported to HTC Desire, working quite well
No patience to wait until Q3 for an official Froyo build? Fret not, dear Desire owners, as udK_dev has managed to push out a near-perfect Android 2.2 port that's working spectacularly well so far. As you'd expect, HTC's Sense overlay is indeed baked in, and while there are still a few quirks here and there, users seem to be generally pleased with how it's going. Better still, the camera has been upgraded to handle 720p video recording, so there's that. Hit the source link for the how-to, but make sure you set aside a few hours first. Or maybe just one.[Thanks, seaders]

Hopefully Incredible isn't far behind? Very similar hardware

Wonder if HTC will add the rumored 720p video recording and hotspot update or if it might be included with 2.2...
@prewreckless yeah... just installed 2.2 on my Incredible. Camera, light sensor and bluetooth don't work... I heard GPS is busted too - haven't tried it yet. Overall, very fast and I forgot what life was like without Sense.
@morganmms
wow um great .. sounds um fun .. haha
@Mister Warmth even with the most complex live wall papers its not laggy.... dont always trust what you hear experience it for yourself
@Kangal if you are talking about the downranking of Mr Warmth that comment about Jobs and cancer was totally uncalled for and ugly. Some of us know what it is to lose someone to cancer. It's no joke.
@I Fling Poo And I hope the Eris too, though I will wait for XDA to fix up the leaked 2.1 problems possibly with a new hboot for 2.2
Incredible would be nice to all the people who don't live in the Old Country.
@HowardtheDuck Agreed. I'm not believing what HTC is saying about it taking so long to port and testing apps. First I questioned what they've done in their apps if the entire market of apps doesn't break when an update comes. Then you have hackers porting the latest OS Sense and all and I know they aren't updating all of HTC's apps. Something isn't right.
@Blaque14K
This rom is a leak from htc, all this guy has done is remove the watermark to protect his source and got a few of the broken things working, it shows us how far htc has got, perfection takes time would you prefer they release something that is broken?
There are several very important things that are not working in the release.
@MrJimlad I can see that side of it. Ita easy to forget that a Google release is the first time the OEMs have seen the code.
Evo is getting there too, also by UDK:

@Master of the Intangible
Ack, pasted the wrong link. That one is the Desire, here's the Evo:

@Master of the Intangible RIGHT ON! Can't believe I missed that thread. Might have to try this over DamageControl w/ ffolks' kernel.
@Master of the Intangible
The HTC EVO already got its Froyo ROM:

Good news for desire users. When can us incredible users expect some love?
@scots79 have fun: http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/09/android-2-2-on-droid-incredible-is-fast/
Looks great scant wait to get it on my evo
Where is my Mytouch Slide 2.2 FroYo?!?
=D
@VtecBros The MyTouch line is totally different than Sense UI, so who knows.
But I think T-Mobile announced they'd upgrade them didn't they?
@EggoEspada Yeah they did but its gonna take a while =/ for them to release becuase of t mobile adding their layout over sence ui.
I already rooted my Mytouch Slide just waiting for CyanogenMod for slide =) then i can enjoy FroYo with out any sence ui on top =)
If they can crank it out that quick, what's taking HTC so long? Bring on the Incredible froyo update!
U have got to love the hackers that use there ability for good things
Yummy, but too bad it doesn't have a front facing camera for us who love "nigga technology"
@pufflye
I was with you until that last bit there. Come again?

@AstroSeven
Nah man I'm black I was referring to the boondocks episode

lol. know your audience.
So theoretically this could be ported over to the Hero, correct? Granted that the Hero's hardware was pretty much outdated by time the VZW Droid arrived, this in theory would be possible. Has anyone out there overclocked their Hero? It could work. One would have to give up that precious battery life, but if you're willing to overclock, you just may be on the adventurous side of the fence.
@s000138170
I've overclocked my Hero (710Mhz), and have Cronos 1.71 running on it (2.1). I get 2 days of battery out of it, that's with WIFI on permanently.. I used to get about 20hours max before. So I'll eagerly be waiting to stick a 2.2 ROM on mine.
@Zaeed I haven't rooted my phone yet. I have been nervous to stray too far from Google's likings. What process did you have to do to get where you are? What are the benefits you've seen from it? If you don't mind me asking.
@s000138170
Well its a hell of a lot faster for one.. Apps2SD, which allows you to install apps onto an ext partition on your sd card, thus freeing up memory. Android 2.1, although it has now been released officially, I'd flashed mine before that happened, means I also can't really compare the flashed 2.1 with stock 2.1. But the ability to overclock is a big plus, as i've stated above i'm running at 710Mhz and its super smooth.. And I just read that 2.2 will be coming to the Hero soon!!
@Zaeed I'm running my hero at 748 mhz, its great. I get like 16 hours but I'm on my phone a lot.
@Zaeed How does Cronos compare to Darch or Fresh?
Its all about the home brew baby! Most (if not all) official ROMs suck major ass.
XDA is always serving them up fresh. When a user has an issue, it can be addressed in a matter of hours instead of months.
They managed to bake sense into 2.2? Wow, thats impressive, even by xda standards.
@B3astofthe3ast
Its actually just a leaked version that they modified
@samleung Ah, that makes much more sense. I wasn't aware there was a leaked sense 2.2 build, as HTC has historically taken their time updating sense with the latest android build.
@B3astofthe3ast There was an interview with a HTC Global PR guy around the same time as the test build leaked who said sense development for 2.2 was moving along ahead of schedule and not to expect a 6-7 month wait as in the past. He also said all of HTC's 2.2 updates should be done before Christmas.
@EroThraX
By before Christmas I hope he means LONG before Christmas, like the first week of August.
By Christmas time Gingerbread will be out. Last I heard HTC has finished their 2.2 update for the Evo, it was just a matter of Sprint now doing their part.
@B3astofthe3ast Someone managed to port the whole of Sense UI onto a Nexus One from the Desire before the Desire had even been released and everything worked except Bluetooth.
Do not underestimate XDA.
Gotta love xda they cab do things even paid developers cannot its amazing
You gotta love xda, the support is amazing
this is pathetic!
If your tired ass smartphone maker had their own OS like Apple they wouldn't have to wait for another man's OS. Then again, beggars can't be chooser considering Android "IS" free.
Ha ha!!!!!!!!!
@pspitts
if your tired ass apple had real antenna engineers like others then you might actually be able to hold your phone like a normal person.
@peacecrafts Don't forget that after 3 years of being on the market they JUST gave apps the API to access music on the phone. And that the LED flashlight app had to be approved before it was even considered. Also that multitasking was available on Android 1.5 two years before it saw light on iOS 4 (and even now it's dumbed down). Fanboys will continue to cling on to their hopes.. oh well.
@pspitts
I'd hardly say they have to wait for another man's OS, usually the complaint is that the other man releases new versions of the OS so fast.
I'm too much of a wimp to do this on my 3 week old Desire.
I'd brick it and be screwed I just know it.
@djbentley
Me too. Coming from the relatively painless and automated jailbreaking from ipod touch and iphone, rooting seems a tad more risky.
