Android 2.2 ported to HTC Desire, working quite well
No patience to wait until Q3 for an official Froyo build? Fret not, dear Desire owners, as udK_dev has managed to push out a near-perfect Android 2.2 port that's working spectacularly well so far. As you'd expect, HTC's Sense overlay is indeed baked in, and while there are still a few quirks here and there, users seem to be generally pleased with how it's going. Better still, the camera has been upgraded to handle 720p video recording, so there's that. Hit the source link for the how-to, but make sure you set aside a few hours first. Or maybe just one.[Thanks, seaders]

@samleung There is really not much to fear you guys. If you follow the instructions and read them clearly, you'll be in good shape. Most things are detailed really well. On top of that, there are few things that can go wrong.
@djbentley Don't worry. I know nothing about code, but I had no problems with my htc. Just copy/paste any code, and everything should be fine.
@djbentley
If you aren't comfortable doing it then don't do it. With Android you really don't have to do any of that - it's already open enough.
At first when I saw the headline I thought "yay finally HTC!". But it turns out it's just an unofficial and buggy build. Some of those who have installed can't even start the phone without removing and reinserting the battery first.
This won't touch my Desire.
@Wokis
Different strokes yo.
I don't know who says it's buggy. Not at all.

Working quite well on my Desire.
@kpenning
Check the XDA-dev thread. There are a lot of people having a lot of issues with this build. It seems like you could get lucky and experience close to no problems at all, but you could also end up with a phone that goes into recovery mode when you press the volume buttons, for example.
This isn't a port, it is a leaked test build from HTC directly for the Desire. Udk just removed the watermark, ironed out some bugs and made it relatively stable.
I'm using the opendesire rom from xda-developers - it's stock froyo. No sense just standard android, everything works, hotspot, speed is sensational and battery life is excellent. The developer is adding 720p video in the next version due today. After using sense for a while I really like the speed and lightness of the stock froyo.
Opening sentence makes it sound like it's not Q3 yet...
Hope the Galaxy S will follow soon. Hummingbird with android 2.2 will rock :)
Little off-topic Question: Does anyone know what the name of the clock widget on the upper right is? I mean the one on the picture next to the newspost.
@acriaos that's a clock widget that comes with HTC's Sense phones.
Bring Froyo to the Epic 4G and I may not even wait for the Gingerbread lineup.... although that 4.3" dual-core qwerty from HTC does sound juicy...
You can do the same in iPhone ....wait nm
If you guys are filled with the right desire in your hearts have good sense, I'd recommend that you switch to iPhone 4.
Android is the OS of the future , its in the numbers so all you fanboys are gonna be in for a real shock next year when android surpasses ios
just to update on this...
I meant to say, this is the first Desire specific port to be leaked, as someone mentioned, this is from HTC, it's not one that's been compiled completely by the community, it came originally from an official source, then the community fixed a lot of things and removed the watermark.
this doesn't have the latest Froyo build, it's FRF85, whereas the Nexus One's version is FRF91, but those builds mostly don't have Sense on them. Paul@Modaco is now offering a 50/50 version with Sense and based on FRF85, but merging with FRF91 which he hopes to be finished with soon,

enjoy, Froyo with Sense really is an amazing device!
I love when things work quite well.
I wonder whats next for the EVO? Anybody know what or when a new updates coming out? Of course HTC doesnt tell u squat when u email them
Avalaunch ported this to the EVO a couple days ago. It's been the first 2.2 EVO rom to get a camera working.
Is there any os I can install on my 3GS like android? And would I be able to overclock? I'm just getting sick of the same interface after 2 years. And I want to try out Android
@thefrataline
I think 1.5, I'm not sure how much progress has been made on the Android port for iPhone.
