I actually wouldn't mind this *if* there was a better way to browse for apps.
The Market app is totally unfit for purpose - browsing is a pain and searching is incredibly random (seriously, in what type of order are search results displayed?).
And don't get me started on the Market website (http://www.android.com/market) - it's a joke, you can't even search.
Hopefully 2.2 and beyond will bring serious improvements - come on, get it together Google!
Not necessarily. This will give a lot of people the ability to bypass Android Market altogether without having to register as a developer.
I can see swarms of local groups creating and sharing these apps for their own personal use without registering and submitting for the Android Market...imagine having to deal with the hundreds of emails from people complaining about your stinking app.
Create your personal sound board with your school's fight song - without getting into trouble with said school - and share it with like-minded people, for instance.
@FNi I agree. when i had my Hero, it was annoying to come across 30 differente soundboards. like what the hell? ive noticed that there are a lot, and i mean a lot more shitty apps in the android market. But i also have to say ive found some pretty amazing ones too. but those were hard to come by. one of my favorites is Lookout. which essentially does everything mobile me does without the mail or idisk portion for free.
i feel this will only make really useless apps grow in numbers. people who think its cool for them wont realize it really is cool and even in a few months they will ask them selfs. what the hell was i thinking...
@I Fling Poo I will second App Brain as well. Especially since they now have their Fast App installer. browse through their website and hit install on an app and have it start downloading on your phone? That's awesome. And yes that was shown off at the Google I/O but I have yet to see it happen officially.
@FNi As much as I love this article, and android, and my android device, I have to agree with you on all points made. I've asked myself similar questions about the android market, little rhyme or reason to it's search results. You'd think with a search giant such as Google behind it that it'd be much better. Well said.
Now that we've thrown 'em off the trail, use the form below to get in touch with the people at Engadget. Please fill in all of the required fields because they're required.
Tomorrow there will be 400,000 apps. Lol.
@AbsoluteDesignz
yeah and 395,000 of them will be sound boards!, i have a feeling the Market is about to become full o` crap.

Probably just so they can go, "Android has more apps than the iphone" which will ruin Apples selling point...
@FNi
www.androidapplications.com helps a bit with that
